FH, I don't think he was referring to dangerous for the moderators. I think he was trying to get to the point that if you push an anti-government narrative (in some countries ) you're going to punished, and these governments will try to punish the website(s) in question. -- Just wanted to clarify this.
Though, I don't think we cause enough dissidence/issues to have authoritarian governments trying to shut us down. So we should be fine.
Honestly I do not know of a list of topics that we can't discuss. I don't see anything in the article that would violate forum rules. Now if you were discussing how to get to a website that was selling assassinations of law enforcement officers that would be against the forum rules. But if you were just discussing the site and not how to get there it would be fine AFAIK... I am not worried about the forum and what any gov't is going to do to it. That is theymos' responsibility! Until he red lights certain topics (which I don't see happening) you can say damn near anything. I firmly believe theymos understands the difference between a distributor and a publisher and those are VERY different categories in terms of legal definitions! The forum is obviously not responsible for what a user should and shouldn't post from their own region, if that user may get in trouble some how for discussing a topic it is their responsibility to deal with those issues. TLDR until theymos tells me my interpretation of the forum rules are wrong (which is a possibility) I will continue to allow all topics that don't violate the forum rules and I do not see a single thing that would persuade me your article (drgomez' article more accurately!) is not 100% allowed by the rules! The forum is as free as possible for good or bad! |

I very much encouraged you to post it in P&S. We have a few USA specific threads so we should be able to have other Country specific topics, the US isn't the only game in town, right! Probably, to prevent abuse. If someone is temp banned for a week or so, and this is public knowledge it could come up later down the line. I'm not sure about displaying banned members. It can be useful for reporting, but I guess removing their message if it infringes the guidelines is probably the right thing to do anyway. I can dig that! At this point it's only 9 folks (I'm quite sure you're one of them already hehe, prob a couple other staffers as well!) at the top so I don't think those users would abuse the privilege. I just looked at it from a convenience stand point didn't think much about abuse, so fair point I guess! |

Have you thought about adding some sort of privileges that come along with it? Nothing too amazing, but how about something like a bigger personal text or the ability to have a clickable link there? I've always thought that would be useful. Maybe a custom title? Editable or not. I think with having some sort of added benefits it would help the forum by encouraging users to report and everyone benefits.

Hmm... Isn't there a way to add a "maxlength" value to quotes?
This would solve the problem quickly.
The problem is that on rare occasion it can make sense to do very long strings of quotes.Agreed One solution may be to (programmatically) allow all users a quota of high-percentage-quoted material and when exceeded an auto-trim occurs. To be honest it's a really minor issue in the grand scheme of things. I don't know of a rule that says long quotes are not allowed, although I guess one could make the argument it spam which is actually reasonable IMO. I am certainly not at the point of deleting posts because it's got a long quote trail! I don't think it needs anything more than people considering the reader! It's more of an etiquette issue at the moment and I hope folks will consider the reader, if you want your post read, be nice to the reader!!!
Another family of solutions would incur some degree of inconvenience to the person doing blind-quoting. The problem here is that threads of conversation tend to benefit a lot by targeted and contentually relevant quotes. The threads which do this tend to be the ones with more high-value content in my observation (and IMHO.)
It's such a minor issue that the simple solution is probably the best ie just be considerate of the reader! If that doesn't work and 1 or a few users are being ridiculous about it we can look at manually intervening and escalating if absolutely necessary! |

I can totally tell what it is but I admit it's because I know what it is so hard for me personally to see anything else! I like the bomb too but not as much as the cloud! I can imagine all the 'what the hell is this symbol' threads haha. I think we're in for those threads regardless of the actual badge. Now I think I want the fat guy in the Fedora so I can see all the threads "why is there a fat guy in a hat under XXXXXX's name! That would make me chuckle the first hundred times! |

Yep, looks like a mushroom cloud to me. Not quite what I had in mind, but definitely one of the better ones suggested in my own opinion. Maybe, only having one mushroom cloud for a higher report number, and not for all of the thresholds.
It sticks out so I think it's better than the higher amounts of reports rather than 300 etc.
But I want a mushroom cloud and only have about 1200 good reports   jk I wouldn't mind that, I like that it's kinda unique! |
