Wasn't anyone paying attention to how the apparatchik behaved during the final days of the USSR?

Those bitcoins will quietly end up in the personal wallet of somebody well-connected.

I'd like to see how that could "quietly" happen seeing as it's the most watched Bitcoin address on the network.

Sad that even under hardcore users this hasnt provided more replies.
But dont worry, in Europe its not different, 70% dont understand this and out of the 30% 20% think they have nothing to hide.

I'd include anyone who thinks they have nothing to hide in the group of people who don't understand.
784  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Did BFL mine with my unit for 3 weeks before shipping it to me? on: October 27, 2013, 05:55:40 PM
I’m inclined to believe Josh’s categorical denial that BFL mines.  If this was something they always did with all customer equipment I would guess other hard evidence would have surfaced by now.  Not sure how long they have been attaching these stickers on the bottom of the PCBs but its pretty easy for people to check their units and see how these dates compare to their ship date.

Why would you trust the dates they put on labels any more than you trust anything else BFL says?  They could write anything they wanted on that.  Maybe it was hashing for three months instead of three weeks.  You don't know.  You do know, though, that "new" electronics don't arrive with dust inside them.

Should you still file if you payed in bitcoins?  How does this process work - how can you prove a bitcoin payment?  Show the blockchain transaction?

I wouldn't bother getting into any lengthy explanations that will just make someone's eyes glaze over.  Just include any kind of dated order confirmation you got indicating (preferably) that they accepted whatever you paid for its current dollar value.

I'd only get into explanations of BTC if the agency actually asks for it or starts an investigation.  Otherwise you're just giving them one more reason to round-file your report.
786  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Josh Calling us animals... on: October 27, 2013, 05:43:03 PM
A lot of us have felt that way about BFL for a while.  It seems they don't care whether you're a customer or not, or may treat customers worse than potential customers.

So far as I can tell, that's exactly the case.  Josh doesn't give a shit about me, as I'm not a customer and never will be.  I just hate douchebags.  They send that monkey out here to fling shit at customers, because they know their customers are suckers and bitches and they can pimp-slap those guys around with impunity.  It's not like they'll do anything.
787  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-10-26 forbes.com - fbi-says-its-seized-20-million-in-bitcoins-from-ross-ulb on: October 27, 2013, 05:36:55 PM
I don't think the Fed would dump them on the market.  They would hoard them like they supposedly do with gold in order to remain somewhat solvent when the dollar inevitably collapses.  This seizure could potentially allow them to obtain BTC without causing a large sudden disruption in the exchange rate that would occur if they purchased BTC in the open market.

They're required to dispose of seized assets in some way.  These are the Guidelines on how they do that.  They're only guidelines, but based on past behavior and guessing, I'd think they'll auction them off.  I'd hope they wouldn't do the worst possible thing, which would be to dump a giant chunk of them on some exchange, but I don't think they'd even want to mess with that.

I could also see them keeping some chunk of them for sting purchases, perhaps after mixing them first (since even a somewhat dim Bitcoin-accepting illegal vendor might just be suspicious of getting paid in coin directly from seized DPR funds).  The agency itself might have no clue, but there certainly are feds who know enough about Bitcoin to handle it as they have so far.  The question is whether they'll have the sense to listen to them if they suggest this, since it's a good idea.  For example, seized drugs are sometimes used subsequently in sting purchases by some agencies, which might be a good reason to be suspicious of the guy who always has the best drugs and always in whatever quantity wanted immediately.

Generally, though, the agency responsible for seizing the assets is not permitted to keep them, especially if they decide to treat BTC as "cash."  (My guess is they treat it as "personal property" which would give them somewhat more flexibility in what they do with it.)
788  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: What's next? Procedure for seized BTC funds from Silk Road on: October 27, 2013, 05:16:13 PM
It would be interesting if there were a pool created to bid on them, the pool sells shares in the pool to raise the bidding fund.  Big buyers are waiting, not buying on exchanges because of expected sales, many/most of the forfeiture auction bidders joined the pool.  Others sold bitcoin to join the pool depressing the bitcoin price further, the pool buys the forfeiture against a thin bidding market at a low price in an artificially depressed period due to the effects of the sale.

This would actually be a good idea.  First, it would probably ultimately be profitable to whoever places the winning bid, even if uncertainty about what will happen with the BTC might depress prices in the short term.  Second, it would help protect BTC against the possible impact of some rapacious bandit simply lowballing it for 10% or under and then dumping it, simply by forcing the selling price somewhat closer to true value.

And then they somehow got court records planted in courts and on court websites, planted fake court documents on Immigrations and Custom Enforcement, issued fake press releases from ICE, put more fake court documents on the Department of Justice website, issued fake press releases from the Department of Justice, etc. etc. etc.

Just in case anyone is taking this seriously and not as the drop-dead retarded bullshit it is.  Look at the past posts of OP.  He's never been anything but a troll here.

I guess this is another good thread to fill ignore lists.
790  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should the Creator of Bitcoin come forward? on: October 27, 2013, 02:15:01 AM
At this point no one is going to believe the person who claims to be Satoshi. There is no need for this person to come forward regardless. Bitcoin is in the communities hands.

It's not a matter of belief.  Whoever would make such a claim would not be believed, unless they could sign a message with Satoshi's key.  If they could, they're probably Satoshi.

I wonder what new disaster has befallen BFL that they sent out their distraction monkey to fling shit again.

The Federal Reserve will probably be the first ones in line to snatch these up with a big batch of freshly printed dollars.
Provided they really manged to get their greedy fingers on them, i think thats something the foundation should get involved with, because it would be catastrophic to have the feds holding and dropping such a large amount on the market. Afterall its just freshly printed bucks, so they dont really care.

I'd imagine that like other seized items, they would auction them off, even though presumably selling them off slowly would maximize their value.  Then it would be up to whoever bought them to decide what to do with them.  Someone who got them for a song would have a strong incentive to start out with a round of profit-taking and cash in some of them, regardless of the short term impact to the Bitcoin price, stopping when it became less profitable to do so.

Of course, other interests (say the Winklevoss twins) could also pick them up in such a transaction, or someone else with enough money to afford picking up a large quantity of a highly volatile asset.  If the Winklevoss twins got it, they'd have a good incentive to hold onto it and put it in their fund, or something similar, and it wouldn't have much impact on the exchange rate because it would still, essentially, be tied up like it is now, just in a venture rather than with the government.

795  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I talked to some people at college about bitcoin and they laughed at me. on: October 26, 2013, 07:37:48 PM
When I first encountered the concept of digital currency, it was Chaum's idea of digital cash being discussed on the cypherpunks list in around '92 or so.  I thought the idea was interesting, but somewhat impractical, and thought the necessary length of the permanent transaction record would be too unwieldy and that, at least as conceived, it was likely to collapse under its own weight.

I didn't encounter Bitcoin until a couple years in, largely looking for a way to play poker online from the United States.  I had glancingly heard of Bitcoin, but hadn't really looked into it, and on reading the description of it, realized it sounded an awful lot like Chaum's ideas from long ago.  I appear to have been correct that the blockchain is, in fact, rather unwieldy, but incorrect in that the vastly increased bandwidth and storage space available makes it reasonably practical to keep around.

Eventually, that issue will have to be addressed in a more permanent fashion, but it appears entirely possible to handle when needed.

Anyone who would just laugh at the whole idea really just doesn't even understand it.  Who cares about the braying of a jackass?

Well, we'll know if the Zetas get involved in Bitcoin, because of the sudden epidemic of a mysterious illness that causes the head to separate from the body.
