People pay, usually large amounts of money, for "master auto techs" to diagnose and fix their vehicles. People also have to trust that the "master auto tech" is competent and isn't ripping them off. Typically though, people are getting ripped off. I do all (most, I don't have certain tools) of my own work on my vehicles, so I know all about the price difference between fixing it yourself and having a shop fix it. Bitcoin doesn't really have the equivalent of "master auto techs" yet (well... I don't know of anyone who will come to your home and set up a secure wallet for you). So, you must learn to do it yourself or face the consequences. Now, If you want to pay me $100 an hour (plus traveling expenses), I'll secure your wallets for you. I don't consider myself a "master wallet tech", but I've been securing my own wallet for over two years now. You are going to have to trust that I won't rip you off though. (Paying me $100 an hour to secure your wallet is a rip off because it's really quite easy to do. I'm also going to drag it out over several hours, when it should only take 10 minutes or so. Plus I'm going to have to sell you "specialized" hardware at a 100% mark up.) See... Bitcoin is a decentralized money system. Its up to the users to protect themselves. You can rant and rage against that fact as much as you want, but that doesn't change anything. Some day in the future we might have services which will protect users who can't protect themselves, but you can be certain that it will cost money. You don't need to alter your behavior one bit, but you won't secure your bitcoins with that attitude. You alter your behavior every day in order to function in society, do you whine about that too? Do you whine about stop signs slowing you down when you are driving somewhere? Do you whine about needing to put gas in your car so that you don't run out of fuel. Do you whine about having to pay taxes so you don't get locked up in prison? Do you whine about needing to prepare food so that you don't stave to death? If you want secure bitcoins, you have to take the proper steps. If you want to learn how to secure your wallets, I will teach you how for free. But you are going to have to purchase a cheap netbook, because that is the method I use (Armory). I use it because I consider it the most convenient and secure method, even though it has the added cost of an air gapped computer. If you are going to whine about having to spend money to protect your assets, then you are hopeless. There are other ways to secure your wallets which do not have the added cost of an air gapped computer (offline paper wallets), but I have not familiarized myself with them, so I can't teach you for free. The auto shop statement is not true most people are not getting ripped off at all you are not taking into account the enormous over head of providing a service center and complying with government regulations or the cost of having on demand service they have to pay the techs to show up even if there are no cars to work on , but that is neither here nor there just a pet peeve of mine. It is not my job to make it safe if bitcoin wants the participation of people it has to offer a better alternative. It has to be a chain saw and not a hand saw. |

Like you should lock your car when leave it to go for shopping you should also secure your wallet. You're used to having to lock your car and not complain that you have to "accommodate the system" or are you leaving the windows open and expecting the car to think for you?
Start a new wallet on a different and secure computer and have 2FA enabled (Google authenticator if you have a smartphone, a Yubikey or via SMS codes). You haven't mentioned it anywhere so I am assuming you weren't using it. Big mistake, especially when you are using an insecure, malware-riddled machine for your financial-related stuff.

Altering one's own behaviour or way of thinking is necessary in all fields, it's part of the learning process. No one seems to complain (too much) when they are learning to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission and are having problems with driving smoothly. They have to . People who move abroad are not surprised if they have to learn the foreign language if they want to have more opportunities. You can spend some time to learn about the *basics* of IT security and about keeping your bitcoin money secure or you can keep getting hacked. You don't have to use a Yubikey — I myself am not using one. You can use your phone and receive SMS messages as an additional measure of authentication while logging in. If for some reason your number/network/country doesn't work with blockchain.info, use google authenticator (your phone must be a smartphone for that though). The problem with your line of reasoning is the bold statements... No one has to use bitcoin they have options. If you want to drive a manual car you have to go and practice but they have options too they can drive an automatic it is a matter of preference. For bitcoin to work it has to be better than what is already in place. I can cut down a tree with a hand saw but why would I if I have access to a chain saw? PP lets me send money any where in the world for free and offers protection and liquidity between currencies. Paypal is a chain saw so why would I choose to use the hand saw of bitcoin? You want me to bend over backward to use bitcoin but I have better options so I will just opt out. Blockchain.info is the standard bearer of bitcoin. I have never been prompted to add another line of defense to secure my wallet. Honestly I just use blockchain as a checking account and almost never store coins there. It is not worth my time to worry about hackers to make bitcoin safe that is not my job. It is a service that I can just choose not to use. Like I dont care that I got hacked because the service providers that I chose to use value my participation and protect me . They accommodate my behavior. You think that I am blessed with bitcoins presence when in actuality it is me that graces bitcoin with my participation. It is people that matter. Bitcoin doesnt magically produce worth it has worth because PEOPLE value it and if the service that bitcoin provides is a hand saw and they have access to a chain saw they will choose not to value it. |

Just picking at points here, I agree with your sediment, but: PP doesn't let me send if it is not from my IP address PayPal does. I've accidentally used Paypal while using a VPN in a totally different country and made payments fine, without any additional hoops to jump through. The difference is that merchants take on the cost of chargebacks, whereas in Bitcoin the user takes the losses. Fluke?
