985  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs Fiat - isn't this a bit of a double standard? on: August 17, 2012, 03:05:13 PM
One of the things that's always amused me about Bitcoin, and a lot of the people who support it is the blatant hypocrisy.

Y'all complain about fiat money, how it's not on the gold standard, how it's backed by absolutely nothing and could crash any minute - and then we all pay good money for bitcoins, which are not on the gold standard, backed by even less, and could crash any minute?

I'm bullish and I love BTC, but can somebody please set me straight? What am I missing? Cheesy

It is not hypocritical at all, let me explain.

Fiat money is immoral, and many of us rightly bitch about it, because of two facts: A) a monopoly group is granted license to print it at whim and B) we're forced to use it.

What this means is that we (society) are forced to earn and save using a medium which can be created out of thin air by banks. This results, over time, in an insidious form of taxation/theft which are are forced to endure. We are slowly, but continually, impoverished by the perpetual debasement of the money forced upon us.

Bitcoin is completely different. A) no monopoly group is granted license to print it and B) it's used voluntarily.

Fiat money is money given value through force of use. Bitcoin is given value by voluntary use. Fiat money is unlimited. Bitcoin is capped (and the inflation up to that cap is perfectly known to all parties). Fiat money is controlled by some individuals at the expense of others. Bitcoin is not controlled by any individuals - or we should perhaps say, each individual has the right and ability to control only his Bitcoins, and no one else's.

See the difference?
986  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: August 17, 2012, 02:56:46 PM
SatoshiDice hit 1,000,000 bets today.

Rock on, Bitcoin.

at what kind of volume?

Over 518,000 BTC has been bet thus far. All the data can be figured out from the blockchain, and there are some other threads which examine the stats in depth. The statistical skills of the people on this forum are quite impressive, especially etotheipi and dooglus Smiley

hi,

how do I send a bet to 50% odd multiple times?

i tried doing it but it says cannot send to a duplicate address

im doing it in my pc wallet not online

You are using the standard Satoshi client on your PC?

In the Send Coins tab, you can click the "Add recipient" button at the bottom and add more bets to the same address I believe. Or is that what you already tried?
988  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: August 16, 2012, 10:35:58 PM

but is there an easier way to get the winnings from a new address?

It's being worked on...
989  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-08-16 cbc.ca CBC look at Silkroad and talk about Bitcoin on: August 16, 2012, 05:35:36 PM
Cool, they fixed it. When I watched the bit on TV this morning they referred to Bitcoin as a "payment process system".

Bitcoin is two things:

1) "Bitcoin" is a payment processing/accounting system
2) "bitcoins" are the unit of currency used in that system

It's important to understand that it is both. To contrast, Paypal is only number 1. USD is only number 2. Bitcoin is both.

Today, SatoshiDice reached 1,000,000 bets.

I think it's undeniably proven the amazing power of Bitcoin when applied to just one industry - online gambling.

Appalling.

996  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Booth at the Ron Paul Festival Aug 24-26 - need samples! on: August 14, 2012, 04:43:58 AM
Show them Coinabul.com. Or even better, bring an ounce of gold and offer to sell it to anyone who has bitcoins for 10% below spot price. You may not find a buyer, but it's good for conversation.  "See this gold ounce? You can buy it below market price... but oh, wait, sorry... we don't accept your silly monopoly FRN bucks."

It's crucial for them to see that they can buy gold/silver with Bitcoin. Make sure gold and bitcoin are presented as friends and allies to Ron Paul supporters Wink
997  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reward Payout vs World Population on: August 14, 2012, 04:38:52 AM

One of the best arguments was that the planet surface would literally boil in 100-200 years if our economic/energy expansion continued.

Right.  Roll Eyes  The planet's surface would "literally boil" if we kept producing goods and services? It amazes me how fragile some people think the Earth is.

So strange that it's been getting colder for the past twelve years...
998  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reward Payout vs World Population on: August 13, 2012, 02:48:53 PM
1) The fact that coins are occasionally lost is not a problem to anyone except the person who lost the coins. Increasing the rate at which coins are mined, or mining them forever at a constant rate, doesn't help the person who loses his coins. It's a non-solution to a non-issue.

2) If ever the Bitcoin community generally agreed to remove the 21m bitcoin cap and extend mining at a constant rate indefinitely, the whole experiment would collapse and fail.

3) There is absolutely no net benefit to removing the cap. Do no equate money with wealth... the fact that more money is printed doesn't mean the world is better off. Market's adjust to the supply of money - if you tinker with the supply of money, you screw up the market.

4) The growth rate of world population is entirely irrelevant when determining what the proper amount of money is. Few people understand this, but it's true.

Mark Warden is releasing this press release in New Hampshire...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Representative Mark Warden Utilizing Bitcoin for Campaign Donations

Goffstown, New Hampshire - August 11, 2012 - State Representative Mark Warden recently added a Bitcoin donation system to his campaign website (www.markwarden.com), the first state representative in New Hampshire to utilize this emerging technology. According to Warden, Bitcoin will allow online transactions without the need for any third-party approval.

“This is a cutting-edge technology that is market based, voluntary, and extremely innovative. I have constituents and vendors who prefer this medium of exchange, so it’s natural to want to respond to the marketplace,” said Warden.

Bitcoin allows users to make transactions with an alternative, decentralized form of currency that is not subject to the inflationary whims of the Federal Reserve or other central banks. Mark Warden is a Republican State Representative running for re-election in Hillsborough County’s District 39, encompassing the towns of Goffstown, Weare, and Deering.
