Data as of 15/12/2023 (updated) NEW: most earned merits in a 24 hour window: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5281030.msg63336847#msg63336847On my local board, I’ve got a running thread on some merits stats with the focus on people’s historical quickness periods to gain merits ( Nº días necesarios para llegar a 1K, 2K, 3K y 4K méritos). This started-off being an answer to a small query, but has since evolved to answering the following: a) How many days did each profile take to reach 1k, ... 17k earned merits ? b) Which is the shortest date interval it took for each profile to earn 1k, ... 9k merits ? c) Which is the most amount of earned merits per profile in a 30 day running window (best) ? d) Which is the most amount of earned merits per profile in a 120 day running window (best) ? e) Which is the most amount of earned merits per profile in a 1 day running window (best) ? Conditions "c", "d" and "e" require a minimum of 100 earned merits to be listed. I’ve shortened the lists here for the sake of clarity. Full compiled data here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HH_15KQFFIUf9zmmn6_M0t5bqFZLyLE2G3pMUxbzhbc/edit?usp=sharingNote: I’m treating days as distinct dates, derived from the TX’s UTC date. I’ve not been picky, and have not considered hours in the calculus (i.e. receiving 100 merits on two separate dates, but within 24 hours, will count as 2 days, not one). a) How many days did each profile take to reach 1k, 2k, ... 9k earned merits ?Criteria: Lists all profiles that have earned 1k, 2k, 3k, 4k, 5k, 6k, 7k merits or above, indicating for each the number of (distinct) days it took. I’ve considered as the starting point the date of the Merit System first TX (24/01/2018 22:12:21), or the account’s creation date, whichever is most recent. It basically states the amount of time it took to reach those landmarks per profile, from the moment they stepped into the Merit System (so as to say). I've looked over the content of the recently released IOCTA 2020 report ( note: this links to a Europol website: https://www.europol.europa.eu/activities-services/main-reports/internet-organised-crime-threat-assessment-iocta-2020 and linked therein pdf), to see specifically what mentions are made on Bitcoin (the report is interesting to whip through per se, but I’m focusing on the Bitcoin derivate here). The document is runs 64 pages long, but if anyone wants a brief summary, I’ve extracted some verbatim quotes I consider interesting. Proper context though should be derived from the completeness of the referenced document itself: 1.4. Cryptocurrencies facilitate payment for all forms of Cybercrime <…> These activities have been long established with Silk Road emerging in 2011 and Cryptolocker hitting its first victims in 2013. At that time, more than 20% of transactions were directly attributable to criminal activity. Although the level of criminal abuse has grown substantially, the legitimate use of cryptocurrencies grew at a much faster rate. In 2019, the overwhelming majority of bitcoin transactions were linked to investment and trading activity so, despite considerable abuse, criminal activity corresponds to only 1.1% of total transactions <…>
The latter information is bases on a report by ChainAnalysis.
<…> The last two years have seen an increase in extortion spam, where the suspect attempts to frighten the victim with a promise of a devastating event should they not receive payment in cryptocurrency, typically bitcoin corresponding to hundreds or even thousands of euros <…> <…> According to a recent study analysing a subset of 4 million intercepted sextortion emails, over 12 500 bitcoin addresses were extracted, 245 of which received one or more payment <…>
The above is interesting, as it partly quantifies the sextortion emails, and shows the usage of way more BTC addresses than I’d expected. <…> The obfuscation methods continue to develop. Centralised mixers troubled with exit scams and high fees seem to be gradually replaced by non-custodial mixing solutions where users do not need to send bitcoins to a third party. Privacy-focused service aside, the bitcoin protocol itself is expected to soon implement features that will make it less transparent to casual observers and investigators alike. <…>
5.3. ADMINISTRATORS AND USERS ADAPT AS THEY AIM TO ENHANCE SECURITY AND RESILIENCE
<…> Administrators are also looking to upgrade their security apparatus with other new features. Some marketplaces are already shifting to wallet-less and user-less markets, adopting multi signatures on Bitcoin and Monero, lacking registration requirements and enacting no JavaScript policies <…>
5.5. PRIVACY ENHANCING WALLETS EMERGE AS A TOP THREAT, AS PRIVACY ENHANCING COINS GAIN POPULARITY <…> Initially, Darkweb markets relied solely on Bitcoin. However, over the past few years this has changed. An increasing number of markets are recognising the benefits of offering multiple coin alternatives, including Litecoin, Ethereum, Monero, Zcash, and Dash. While Bitcoin still remains the most popular payment method (mainly due to its wide adoption, reputation and ease of use), the use of privacy-enhanced cryptocurrencies has somewhat increased albeit not at the rate expected by their proponents. Monero is gradually becoming the most established privacy coin for Darkweb transactions, followed by Zcash and Dash. All these privacy coins may present a considerable obstacle to law enforcement investigations <…>
Now the above just assess the situation and framework for their recommendations, which start on page 60 of their report. Amongst those figure: <…>There is a persistent need for better cooperation with hosting services, social media platforms, and ISPs. Companies need to be more proactive in illegal content and activity and blocking it as soon as they detect it. One way of improving this is to invest in technologies that make sure their platforms are clean. They should also be able to demonstrate more willingness to assist law enforcement agencies to deal with, for example, CSE, and show improved openness and transparency.<…>
<…> Considering the fast nature of cybercrime, it is important to make the exchange of information in light of international cooperation faster by implementing channels with, for example, the relevant ISPs at the European level (VPN, anonymisers, anonymous email providers, cryptocurrency exchanges, etc.).<…>
<…> Darkweb threat actors increasing reliance on encrypted email services, privacy-enhanced cryptocurrencies and BPH providers pose a substantial problem to law enforcement. This calls for increased KYC type policies.<…>
<...> Two years, 4 million intercepted, not all of them, and only 250 payments? <...>
Payment addresses, not single payments (1 address-> n payments).

The Merit Speedy Gonzales’ of the forum.

¿no? No … Ayer vi que Google Ads está en proceso de endurecer el (relajado) proceso de crear Ads usando su plataforma: As part of this initiative, advertisers will be required to complete a verification program in order to buy ads on our network. Advertisers will need to submit personal identification, business incorporation documents or other information that proves who they are and the country in which they operate. Beginning this summer, users will start to see disclosures that list this information about the advertiser behind the ads they see.
We will start by verifying advertisers in phases in the U.S. and continue to expand globally. Because we are working closely with our advertising partners to scale the program while continuing to ensure we are surfacing helpful information to our users, we expect that this process will take a few years to complete.

A vulnerability in Ledger's hardware wallets allows a request for an altcoin transaction to actually request the movement of Bitcoin.
• The exploit was reportedly disclosed to Ledger back in 2019.
• Ledger said it's because the firm wanted "to avoid a situation where user funds would be locked and users unable to spend their funds.”
"A new version of the Bitcoin app will be released today, with an update that will display a warning and prompt for confirmation when an unexpected path is used—therefore solving this issue," said a Ledger spokesperson (who later confirmed that the fix is now live).
ver: https://decrypt.co/37651/ledger-exploit-makes-you-spend-bitcoin-instead-of-altcoinsAttack methods The methods of attack here are many. Essentially, any trust placed on altcoin ledger apps can be exploited. Consider the following: • You are invited to try out a new service with testnet coins, that actually sweeps real Bitcoin out of your wallet. • You swap low value coins on an untrusted exchange. The exchange can read your Bitcoin balances and given a good enough opportunity will take the exit. You wouldn't have applied the same level care with altcoins. • You could be targeted with a patched version of Ledger Live that sends Bitcoin instead of altcoins. Then prompted to do a P2P trade with altcoins. No investigation has been done on instances of this exploit in the wild.
What can I do to protect myself? Update the Bitcoin app to version 1.4.6 in the Manager in Ledger Live. This will automatically update all Bitcoin derivative apps. As the issue is specific to Bitcoin derivative apps, you can continue to use other apps without any concern. Why do you display a warning instead of blocking such transactions? If these transactions would be blocked, this would lock the funds of many of our users. This is an industry-wide problem caused by the structure of early Bitcoin forks - transactions are indistinguishable from the point of view of an offline signing device.
Ver: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015738179-Derivation-path-vulnerability-in-Bitcoin-derivativeshttps://donjon.ledger.com/lsb/014/An attacker who managed to install malware on the victim computer or smartphone can trick users into accepting to sign a Bitcoin transaction using an altcoin app on their Ledger Nano S/X app instead of the Bitcoin app. This vulnerability does not enable attackers to extract any secrets from the Ledger devices such as the private keys used to sign transactions. It also does not enable attackers to bypass the PIN authentication. Thus, the physical device security remains untouched.

Update -> Data as of 18/08/2020:I was curious how many times BTC has been above 11K historically. I looked around, but couldn’t come across a site that provided this information (now someone will probably point to a site that does). I’ve used the data from CoinMarketCap, ranging from the 29th of april 2013 onwards (CoinMarketCap has no prior data values, therefore, the initial years are not included in the dataset, and the calculus will not be complete for low BTC price values): https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/historical-data/?start=20130429&end=20200818. I’ve created the following table (Number of day BTC is above a certain value): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ukVQfvvopAp9mjAtwnA0DQhPLv6L1AomCitFGQ_NGh8/edit?usp=sharing. The table allows us to see on which dates, and on how many occasions, Bitcoin has reached or surpassed a value of 11K$, 12K$, 13K$, and so forth. It turns out that BTC Price has been equal to or surpassed these values on the reflected number of occasions (days): - 10K on 209 occasions (distinct days) - 11K on 132 occasions (distinct days) - 12K on 64 occasions (distinct days) - 13K on 46 occasions (distinct days) - 14K on 41 occasions (distinct days) - 15K on 30 occasions (distinct days) - 16K on 20 occasions (distinct days) - 17K on 16 occasions (distinct days) - 18K on 6 occasions (distinct days) - 19K on 4 occasions (distinct days) - 20K on 1 occasion (distinct days) Notes: - If we modify the value of a column header on row number 4, we can see the results for any custom value. Bear in mind that there is no data prior to the 29/04/2013. - If we filter a column, setting the filter to the value of “1”, we should get to see the list of dates on which the given value was met or surpassed (i.e. change H4 from $10.000 (10K) to $750). Edit: Added a tiny meaningless dashboard to play with (that's how the Merit Dashboard started ...): CoinMarketCap Data Dashboard The idea is simply to be able to filter the High, Low or Range (High-Low) for a specific value range (use the slider, or click the values on either end and overwrite them), and the date range. This, as I stated, is not big deal at all, merely anecotical really, and does not intent to go beyond.

Our ecommerce and marketing database leaked, we immediately fixed the breach. Contact and order details were involved. Your funds are safe.
What happened?
On the 14th of July 2020, a computer researcher that participated in our bug bounty program notified us of a potential data breach on the Ledger website. We immediately fixed the breach after receiving the researcher’s report and undertook an internal and external investigation of the situation. While conducting the investigation, we discovered an unauthorized third party had gained access to customer information.
What personal information was involved?
Contact and order details were involved. This is mostly the email address of our customers. Further to investigating the situation we have also been able to establish that, for a subset of customers were also exposed: first and last name, postal address, phone number and ordered products. Due to the scope of this breach and our commitment to our customers, we have decided to inform all of our customers about this situation.
Payment information, credentials (passwords) or crypto funds are not impacted by this data breach. This data breach has no link nor impact on our hardware wallets and the Ledger Live application. Your crypto assets are safe and are not in peril.
What we have done, what we are doing
We have taken immediate action on 14th of July 2020, to resolve the data breach.
On the 17th of July, we notified the CNIL -- the French Data Protection Authority -- about this data breach and are continuing to work with authorities throughout the legal process.
We are continuously monitoring for evidence of our customers’ contact details being disclosed on the internet, and have found none thus far. We also performed an internal penetration test.
We are currently in the process of filing a complaint before the French public prosecutor regarding the unauthorized access and we will support law enforcement investigation.
We are extremely regretful for this incident. We take privacy very seriously, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this matter may cause you.
What you can do
We recommend you exercise caution -- always be mindful of phishing attempts by malicious scammers.
As a reminder, Ledger will never ask you for the 24 words of your recovery phrase. If you receive an email that looks like it came from Ledger asking for your 24 words, you should definitely consider it a phishing attempt.
We suggest you visit Ledger Academy security section to educate yourself on general security principles and more precisely our article about phishing attacks.
Pascal Gauthier, Ledger CEO

If the above is completely true, and facts and scope of the breach are as is, be very wary over the comming days of personalized phising attempts. It really despise the fact that addresses were leaked. That is unforgivable, and although I do not expect a criminal campaign preceded by a mass sell of 5$ wrenches at warehouses, for a company that works on security, encrypting the DB and storing the keys separately is bloody paramount.
