1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][RIC] Riecoin: constellations POW *CPU* HARD FORK successful, world record on: May 08, 2017, 08:36:01 AM
there is perhaps a gpu miner for this? i see a gpupool on the first post, but i think it's something else? or this is still under cpu only, not that i believe it lol, i guess someone is private mining with gpu already

gpupool offers only CPU mining for RIC.  I don't claim to understand the naming. Smiley

As with all "CPU-only" coins, someone(s) is either botnet mining, or GPU mining, but it's very hard to say which.  Because of the DDoS situation, I'd be willing to bet that there's a botnet involved somewhere, though.

+1 also my best guess ...

@Gatra have you contacted Polo already?

The miners are not interested in finding the most important sextuplet, even having the decentralization you say (part developers .... maybe?) Instead interest the coins ... We, for now, have 0% pool and transaction fee So we do not earn anything! In fact it's just a cost.

It remains the fact that BLOCKS ARE BROADCASTED IN RETURN by SOLO MINERS !!! If this helps the coin then you are crazy!!!!!!!

It seems the lower the orphan rate, the more you complain Roll Eyes.

Every coin will have some miners withholding broadcast of blocks, this is why good hashrate distribution is so important, to prevent selfish mining.

All of the Riecoin pools are 0% fee currently, if your users aren't donating enough for your liking then add a fee to your pool and stop complaining.

uBlock.it is interested in the scientific function of Riecoin, and is looking forward to more world records  Grin

+1 here .... the more distributed the hash rate is the better and stable is the coin. Centralized mining in one pool destabilizes (every) coin tremendously. I personally don't care about 0 % pool fee's. Pools are unfair to miners which big hashrates, so I would always advise against using a pool unless a miner can not mine a single block within 1 or 2 months by itself. And there is the risk that the pool closes down (voluntarily or involuntarily) and the RICs in the miners account waiting for payout are gone/frozen. Let me remind you of the last big pool which had almost all the RICs network concentrated in one place. When they went offline, not only was a lot of money gone (frozen in their accounts) but also the difficulty sky high and it took days to get it down to normal in order do any transaction on the network. If this happens again RICs is going to be kicked out from the last few exchanges.

do we have a list of exchanges? ...

seems the op is a little outdated - or the some of the links are broken ...

#crysx

Took a bit to figure out the answer because of the experiment below.

The primary two are Poloniex and BTC38.

But someone mentioned a few posts back that Poloniex seems to be broken right now.  I just checked and they have a note on the wallet that says RIC is "Temporarily Disabled."  I've filed a ticket with them (and others probably should too).

(If anyone from Polo is reading this and you need help with the wallet, please feel free to reach out to this thread!)

Also verified that BTC38 *is* working.  But because they're China-based, they have a hold on BTC withdrawals.  If you want to buy or sell RIC there, you need to pick another alt-coin to use as an intermediary.  I just tried sending some BTS there (it confirms really fast), selling it for CNY, buying RIC, withdrawing the RIC to my wallet, sending the RIC back to BTC38, and selling the RIC back to BTS, withdrawing the BTS back to Bittrex, and selling it there.  That all worked.

My theory is:
Poloniex suspended the wallet because their node got constantly ddos'ed. They try from time to time to bring it back online, but it does not sync, because of all those fake shadow nodes in the network. They will eventually delist the coin then.

My node got ddos attacks as well (offline now .. can't be bothered to bring it back online ... it had a constant connection to polo and btc38 ... which was good for my own mining (not doing that anymore either)). It was pretty stable for more than 2 years until the attacker started to destabilize the network and the one pool with the biggest hash power started to disconnect itself from the network for longer periods of time (for whatever reason ... my best guess ... dDos ... my worst guess ... selfish mining).

Things we can do:
- Poloniex will only talk to the main dev of the coin to take any advice on how to get the wallet back on track. So Gatra please do so!
- A more decentralized mining operation is needed ... 4 pools and a lot of solo miners ...
- Optional: Start tracking the attacks back to the source ... and kick his/her ass.

Anyhow ... Beileid zum verlorenen BTC.

Interesting.  Would it be helpful if I updated the open-source miner?  I don't have very much time right now in the semester, but might be able to sneak in a weekend.  It's been two years - I bet I can find at least a 10% speed bump, though it's been a while since I've looked at my code.

A performance boost for the open source miner would certainly help promote better hashrate distribution.

+1 Here ... I might even start mining again.  Grin

ok.  I'm out of time for now, but as a start, I've:
(a)  Merged the pull request for stratum support from the riecoin github account into mine, in branch "stratum".
(b)  Started a little bit of code cleanup as I try to remember my way around the code.  As a starting point, I
ripped out a little code in favor of using the primesieve library, fixed a bug with the choice of the number of
workers doing the sieve, and started moving the code a bit more to more-standard c++11.

this is all in github/dave-andersen/fastrie on branch "stratum".

is there any reason to keep the old ypool/xpt protocol version around, or should we just go all-stratum?

I'd be curious if anyone sees a performance difference or regression from that bugfix, but it won't
be more than a percent or three.  Right now, my focus is on getting the code into a slightly
better place for further optimization.  (Please don't expect miracles or be annoyed if they don't
manifest. Smiley

Sweet ... a good start ... looking forward for me open source. This is what makes a community stronger!

For all users: I have always said that the solo mining harms users using the available pools, I don't care if RiePool gets the 30-50-80% power!

I would just like, I think in the interest of the whole community, that users were using the pools, that's all dear!

And yet, this is what doesn't make sense.

Pools or not, miners get block rewards in proportion to their share of the total hash rate.

That's it.  Pools have benefits for smaller miners, and it's good to have pools around to make it easier for everyone to participate.  But pools are bad for larger miners, because they charge fees that would otherwise go in their own pockets.  And, as anyone who's played the game knows, mining is a very low-margin activity, particularly for CPU coins like this where botnets often get involved.

But as long as there are some ways for small miners to play, then it doesn't matter if pools get 5% of the hash or 100% of the hash.

Cryptocurrencies are generally viewed as secure as long as no entity or colluding group of entities has more than 50% (or 33%, if you favor the selfish mining interpretation) of the hash rate.  In that regard, any pool having more than 50% is a *potential* problem, because the operator of that pool could choose to discard the work done by others, or prevent certain transactions from going through.

What's the argument that all users need to use pools?

Having a strong *community* is important, and pools can be a part of that, or they can not -- but that very much depends on the pool operator.  Operators who just run a pool aren't very important.  Operators who contribute code back, help publicize the coin, and support users and miners, etc., are great.  People who DDoS nodes attempting to join the network, however, are actively harmful to the health of the coin, because they make it harder for people to use it and join the community.

Amen to that!
So the problems (with the network) started after RiePool showed up, followed by lots of node ddos'ing as soon as RiePool had more than 50 % semi-permanently.
Simba also actively violates licenses with her closed-source miner (software) which only works for her pool. Not a nice community player, more like a hash-power shark who looking for his personal gain at the cost of the whole RIEcoin network.

What about these addresses that mine only one block and no more? are the 30-40% of the riecoin mining. These addresses are destroying the coin too?

am i missing something here? ...

how is ANY of this destroying the coin? ... i dont get it ...

and dont think im a green newbie to mining - especially some of the more difficult coins ... i am really at a loss as to why ANYONE would claim that solomining - pool mining - or ANY mining is destroying the coin ...

on the algo front though - this is such an interesting concept that its almost too difficult to look away when it comes to hashing / algo ...

very unique in every sense of the word ...

dev - lets chat some ...

#crysx

Exactly my point ... many ppl. here already suspect simba behind the attacks on the network with his > 50 % network (pool) hashing power. He/She gets very defensive when somebody is not using his pool, because it would mean it is not so easy to manipulate the network anymore. Pure speculation I know ... but this is how I see it.

I'm pretty sure you are one of Simba's sock puppet accounts ....
I think that RockAndPool are you! Same offensive language! And exactly like him I point to moderators.

Bye Bye Baby

I want to congratulate with "the one" who SOLO mining because it's destroying this coin!

Clap clap

And how is the solo miner doing this? I'm mean the destroying part? Please enlighten us with you endless wisdom.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sometimes They Come Back  Roll Eyes

... also RockAndPool

Also Sometimes They Come Back  Roll Eyes

You only have to read the blockchain to understand the movements of the coins and find out who is "THE ONE" that go Solo..... But you know that already!

P.S. But you two said that Solo mining? ahahahhaha

Still waiting for your answer ... why is Soloming bad (for RIC)? Please be very specific and technical.

...I'm considering investing heavily in mining on an independent well-behaving pool so the chain with most of the miners always wins.
Let me get this straight... Are not you the one who always told us not to let a pool either more than 50% of the mining power?

And now you tell me that would like to invest in computational power for a pool that SHOULD have most of the mining power?

It's not a contradiction ??

Then... who guarantees that you can actually get more than half of the miners for a third pool?

Maybe you're the one who solo mine and do 40-45% of the blocks?

Also I remind xptMiner2.........

I conclude by saying that RiePool is perfectly stable and it seems that the attacks are ending.

Thanks for support

It is you who destabilizes the network by disconnecting your nodes ... nobody else does that ... therefore it is you who is attacking the network with lots of hash power (from inconsiderate miners).

14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][RIC] Riecoin: constellations POW *CPU* HARD FORK successful, world record on: January 30, 2017, 10:52:38 AM
7 nodes in the network..
price goes down day by day...
Still lot of orphans everyday and nobody can solomine cause the riepool fork.

There are 2 solutions. Stop mining riepool or Simone (Simba84) stops forking the chain.

If not, this coin is going to disappear.

Gatra let's find a way to exclude rouge nodes in the network, or blacklist them. Simba84 has always been hostile against this coin.

25-50% of all mined blocks are orphans - riecoin network is on the brink of complete collapse.

How to prevent that: maybe to add much more confirmations ~ 100 for block to be valid and/or to change difficulty adjustments to every 1 hour(24 blocks) to prevent massive jumping in to network after 12h high difficulty period is off.

Second measure - change how network operates - to make nodes auto-rejects of orphan blocks solutions,so every block will be mined until we get a valid block solution on network.

Sounds good to me ... Gatra, what do you think?

Just for your interest:

RiePOO is destroying the network. He's making his own network disconnected from the principal network (a fork) then he connects his daemons to the network twice a day to orphan all the users blocks.

NO ONE CAN SOLOMINING IF RIEPOOSHIT IS HAVING HIGH HASHRATES
NOBODY CAN MINE IN ANOTHER POOL
TRANSACTIONS ARE DELAYED TO TWICE TIMES A DAY

get out of this fucking shitty pool and go solomining or another pools: gpupool xpoolx minipool.

That is what I am suspecting the entire time.
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][RIC] Riecoin: constellations POW *CPU* HARD FORK successful, world record on: December 13, 2016, 06:41:40 AM
This is not what is happening. The blocks orphaned arw blocks discovered hours ago. Like 5 or 6 hours, then riepool webpage goes down and when its up all the blocks discovered are orphaned. Looks like riepool have its own network, like a fork or something. I tried to connect nodes to riepool.ovh but ita not available to connect

This is exactly what I described but with a different technique.
ALL Riepool nodes should be public accessible otherwise the pool is splitting the network on purpose. A simple wallet move would not cause a network orphanage like this.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][RIC] Riecoin: constellations POW *CPU* HARD FORK successful, world record on: December 12, 2016, 02:25:18 PM
The blocks of solomining and the other pools appear at the chain and suddenly are orphaned and changed to riepool. I have 29 peers connected and my blocks are orpganed all the time

Can someone explain this? Or please tell me what to do to fix this?

Thanks

Well that's the power of a +51 % network share. As I wrote previously multiple times a coin with a pool owning more than 51% network share is no good. Especially when the node count is extremely low as well.
The pool owner can 'wait' with all the hashing power and enough network nodes (in control only accepting his result and nothing else) until you try to propagate a block (you mined). The pool (hashing power) has probably already an solution for the block but 'waits' for you to try and share your block in the network. Once it detects that you try and share a block it shares it previously found block among all the nodes (it has in control) and your block get orphaned because 'it lost' the propagation race.

Something weird is happening to the riecoin network.

Any clues?
Single nodes have been dDoS'd from the network. I stopped mine as well, because I stopped mining a loooong time ago. Had two attacks, one 5 Gig/s and one 3 Gig/s.
Ultimately fewer nodes means unstable network, and easier to make a hostile takeover.
