421  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] So, why is porting primecoin mining to the GPU so difficult? on: September 07, 2013, 06:12:30 PM
Thanks, I didn't notice that he compared his speedup to a dual GPU. I wonder with what metric he compared it and if he factored in the new advances in hp-10 that brought a >2x speedup with optimisations to the sieve.

Still, the sieve looks quite easy to port to the GPU and I will try to do that if my time permits it. Let's better have a definite prove that GPU sieving is ineffective right now, if that is really the case. Although, a >10 difficulty could make the sieving part more important than now, that could change the current situation.
Since the openCL miner is in the wild now, have you had a chance too look at it and see if a CUDA miner is possible?
422  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs 30 day countdown to the end of September on: September 07, 2013, 05:56:57 PM
You got a forced refund because of your attitude, 1 solitary case that I've heard of.

Josh Zerlan didn't like the taste of his own medicine, and made me pay for it. Period. End of story. Indisputable fact.

I understand what you are trying to say, but IMO, you're way off the mark.

There is a world of difference between Bick's mining collective making a decisive judgment call to mitigate loss, and the attitude of contempt and arrogance displayed by Butterfly Labs' unscrupulous and unethical behavior.

You understand what I am saying and disagree.  The sad thing is we will never know if either of us are right because the question was never asked.   5% of people could have wanted a refund or 95% could have.  How many people wanted a product and were willing to wait?  We'll never know.

The overall problem here is there is no need to post the same thing in multiple threads, like Bick was just doing, unless you are trying to incite something or you're just an ass.  I remember a few weeks back there was a kid posting in every BFL thread he could find and even started a few more, complaining cause he hadn't gotten his Jul 15th order.  Well, he's now gotten it and he'd made like 1 post offering to sell BTC.  How fickle the haters are...

You are right however, it is wrong to compare Josh to Bick.  Bick was 'CEO' and could pull the plug without a care as to what the customers said.  Josh is not the ultimate authority at BFL, he is a go-between.  He's trying to make the best of a bad situation and he can't make the calls.  You all treat him like he is the sole person responsible for everything and you started the bad behaviour and are now complaining that you are getting back some of your own.

Wow, I woulda missed this thread if someone hadn't linked it!  I'll be in KC that day and I love sushi!  Tell the restaurant not to run out of wasabi!!!!!
424  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL - Is this saga finally going to go away on: September 07, 2013, 04:57:36 PM

Nope not over yet...
And yet you still never asked.
425  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs 30 day countdown to the end of September on: September 07, 2013, 04:54:25 PM
Of course you ignored me, you can't handle the truth.  You didn't even let your customers have a voice, you made a sweeping decision for all of them and patted yourself on the back for 'doing the right thing' which was only IN YOUR MIND.  You did to your customers what XIAN01 claims BFL did to him, and you denounced BFL for doing it.  You, sir, are the Hypocrite.

Ok, I'm not one to reduce myself to ad-hominem attacks, so I won't, but it's not even in the same ball-park dude.

You are distorting reality to fit your own warped narrative and history.

Bick never openly abused or shown contempt towards his customers, and has been completely on-the-level with honoring refunds and making the best of a situation that was completely beyond his control with Avalon screwing the community projects.

Shame on you for trying to group Bick with the likes of BFL. Not in this reality.
You are missing the whole point... Bick never asked.  BFL used to honor refunds until they had product in hand and then sent out an email asking people to confirm they still wanted product.  Bick never asked.  You got a forced refund because of your attitude, 1 solitary case that I've heard of.  Bick never asked.  They both boil down to forced refunds and they were both wrong.  BUT STILL BICK NEVER ASKED.  Steamboat asked his customers IF they wanted refunds.  Bick never asked.
426  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] Working on a GPU miner for Primecoin, new thread :) on: September 07, 2013, 03:04:37 PM
Any word on getting this to work on NVIDIA cards? From what I understand it's because the nvidia cards don't support opencl 1.2 (yet?). Any potential workarounds on windows or linux?

NVIDIA is poor at doing anything GPGPU.

Wha..?!  No way!  NVIDIA has a huge advantage over AMD in many aspects.  Just look at how well their software works compared w/AMD's.  You still need an X server running to do computation with AMD GPUs and that totally blows.

NVIDIA made a poor (IMO) strategic decision by abandoning OCL but you still have to give them the credit for creating it!  I think they were afraid to abandon their early adopter CUDA customers and decided they didn't have the throughput to support both.

I think eventually they'll reverse their position on OCL.  But to a lot of folks doing GPGPU they don't care about OCL and they're using CUDA and loving it.  So it's not fair to say "NVIDIA is poor at doing anything GPGPU" IMO.

OpenCL Trademarks belong to Apple Corp. I dont think Nvidia made OpenCL.

They might be good at GPGPU, but only on the GPU's that specialize in it. ie. Their tesla series. The consumer GPU's they make aren't as good.. but they are also the vast majority.

Idk.

All I know is that the GPGPU software I've seen out there runs tons faster on ATI cards than it does on NVIDIA cards.
CUDA would work very well for this type of computing.  Over on Mersenne.org, they have had CUDA based programs to run the Lucas-Lehmer tests for quite some time now while the OPENCL crowd have barely gotten one functioning and at nowhere near the speed of CUDA.

In trial factoring work, a GTX590 using CUDA puts out 681.6GHz Days of work per day compared to a 7990 using OPENCL putting out 748.7.   On sha-256 the 590 is ~190 to the 7990's 1200+.   Porting the OPENCL to CUDA will not be an easy task, but I'd bet the result would surprise you.

And my ignore list grows.

Have had that fellow ignored for over a week. Clearly another multiple account from BFL. Shady people from a shady company.

Did you ask your customers if they WANTED the refund or did you just think for them and cancel everything and refund?

Is this still the place to check for the latest hardware specs from ASICMINER?

No, this is the place to come and bitch about ASICMiner primarily...

And that is totally undeserved, right?
Of course, all bitching and moaning is undeserved.

You seem to have a problem with Bicknellski's unprofessional behaviour and need to point it out but you clearly don't apply the same standards to you beloved Joshua.  The example below how to act professionally to a competitor.

You are a hypocrite and clearly a fanboy.

You seem to have a problem with Bicknellski's unprofessional behaviour and need to point it out but you clearly don't apply the same standards to you beloved Joshua.  The example below how to act professionally to a competitor.

I see, so if 1 person does a wrong it's okay to then also do a wrong in response to that wrong.  Roll Eyes

You are a typical hater.  You refuse to see both sides of things.  I however am not a fanboi, I am a realist.  BFL does not have the best track record, and they have taken abuse after abuse after abuse.  I don't have anywhere near the patience Josh has, I'd've been calling you all monumental assholes over a year ago.

The sad point is hate does nothing but cause an untenable atmosphere for all involved, yet you and others like you just stoke the flames for no other reason than because you can.  "We expect" becomes "This is a 100% absolute guarantee!".  Someone makes an impassioned statement and has 4 words quoted making it sound like the opposite of what was said.  I personally wish Inaba would stop posting on here as the trolls go rabid and you have nothing but vitriolic hate spewing for hours afterwards, and then the troll back-patting over thier comments begins.

Bick's suppliers failed to come through, kind of like BFL, yet he gave refunds.  Why?  Cause he already KNEW how he'd be treated if he didn't.  He'd been doing to BFL what others would do to him if he tried to work through his problems, so he took the easy way out and refunded everyone and walked away.  Takes a real big man to quit and walk away.

Steamboat(the bigger man) decided to take BFL's path, he asked who wanted a refund and who wants to wait.  I've already see the rabid dogs snarling over his 3 days of trying to work things out before posting, god help him if the chips get delayed yet again.  BUT, he's not BFL, so it's ok if his suppliers have problems.

The point of all of this is that yes, BFL fucked up, as have many other startups on this forum.  But BFL is still working towards the goal line while the others have disappeared.  We've GOT to have a scapegoat!  There's nobody else left!!!  Damn you guys are pathetic.

For 2015   I estimate hash rate to hit over 5000TH/s

If you are gonna invest... you need to partner with a bulk asic deal or get someone to build an asic / fpga farm for you.

I started early 2013....I am just starting to make ROI.   Expect to be in debt 3 times longer than calculations predict or invest in BTC very wisely.
2015?  There are more than 5PH(est closer to 8PH) of current pre-orders that are supposed to be delivered by the end of 2013.

"usb miner and profit" in one sentence? Lol. Lmao. Rotfl. You guys are too funny.

It depends on the price of USB miner and cost of total electricity used for mining and the system.
I'm still waiting for .01BTC USBs.  Course, they'll probably only make .001BTC at that point. :/

Smells Underpowered

Smells like it is in stock.
I guess it can be considered better to lose BTC now than lose it later ...

439  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL custom made PSUs burnt in europe on: September 07, 2013, 10:09:58 AM
I thought those PSU's were automatic/detect type  Huh

Far as I know most are nowadays................  Roll Eyes

Yeah it perfectly clear from the OP but it would appear the power supply is standard ATX PSU.  right?

I haven't seen a manually switched ATX power supply in about ten years.  Power supply companies hate them because you know some x% will forget to switch it and that just means x% more RMAs.

IF BFL is actually shipping manually switched (god I would hate to see how inefficient those low end pieces of garbage are) power supplies to customers in Europe without either setting them to 110V or putting a warning sticker on the plug connector well that is just sad.
I have 8 computers in my house, none of which are over 6 years old, every single power supply has a 110/220v switch.  Dell, Acer, HP... all of them have a switch.  I even checked the Thermaltakes I bought less than 2 years ago to power my GPUs and all of them have this big red slider switch to move between 110/220.  Don't know where you get your auto-switching PSUs from over the last 10 years, but it's obviously nowhere near me.

I find it funny that since it is BFL we are dealing with here that customer error has become BFL's fault.  When I was in the Navy, we'd invariably have someone miss a switch and blow a power supply.  I was acting as a Systems Operator when this happened on a brand new Dell.  I personally called Dell and explained the problem and their response was they could not RMA for customer error.  Fortunately the replacement only cost $25 and had free shipping.  I even just called Thermaltake and asked about getting an RMA on a unit accidentally plugged into 220 and was told they did not RMA for customer error, but they could fix it for a fee.

But, hey, it's BFL, it ALWAYS their fault.  Roll Eyes
440  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL custom made PSUs burnt in europe on: September 07, 2013, 09:43:00 AM
Our power is 120/220 @ 60 hertz,his power is 120/220 @ 50 hertz.

That's where the problem could be,frequency is lower  Cool

Lets see if my answer helped him  Cheesy
50Hz vs 60Hz  would not cause anything to go poof.  While the lower frequency would cause the power supply to run a bit warmer than usual (and thereby shortening it's lifespan) frequency alone would never instantly burn anything up.  My laptop has run off of 50Hz in Japan, 60HZ here and 400Hz off of aircraft power to no ill effect.  I did fry a power supply in Dubai when I plugged it into a 220V socket (fortunately it was not plugged into the laptop at that time).
