561  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is forum escrow still safe? on: October 12, 2015, 07:50:09 PM
The reply by OgNasty on page one really sums it up.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1204573.msg12644929#msg12644929

Use someone with a long history of escrowing successfully, 1 year of experience + thousands of posts + lots of drama and accusations going and coming adds up to hype, not trustworthiness.

With respect to Quickseller's long-winded, unsolicited self-defense post on page one (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1204573.msg12661093#msg12661093), I just want to point out that again and again he suggests that anyone who is rational will agree with him.  His mental model of the world doesn't allow states where he is incorrect and someone else is correct.  Much less the nuanced situations that occur constantly in life where to some extent, many people are correct in conflicting ways.  Even now, he fails to see that he's scammed countless people (well, presumably he knows the count, but we'll never know it) by collecting escrow fees from them without actually providing them an escrow.  He thinks that if you're trading with him, you deserve to pay an extra fee for the comfort his reputation is supposed to give you.  He fails to see that a rational person could actually end up in a dispute with him and that he'd be unable to provide a neutral arbiter in that context.  Alas, so it goes.

If I were going to engage in trading on here, I'd be looking for an escrow with a long history of trading, but also someone who doesn't engage in wars and defamations and accusations and who doesn't have an army of alt-shills to back them up in an argument.  Ie, I'd be looking for someone with a level-head.  You can still find these people on bitcointalk, but quickseller has never been one of them.  The thing about having a level-head is that it doesn't draw much attention, so that kinda person doesn't have 100 accusation threads against them in meta, so that kinda person isn't the first one you think of when you think of forum escrows.   I fully believe that those kinds of people are still around and that careful people can trade here safely.
562  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problem on Ubuntu on: October 12, 2015, 07:09:22 PM
The problem hardcoresuperstar had is not a problem with the ppa, but a problem with his install of Ubuntu. At some point during the installation or during use, something happened that misconfigured something so that he gets all of those dependency errors.

Right, and usually you can, if you're a glutton for punishment, drill down into those errors and find out exactly what packages are preventing each other from installing, but in this case harcoresuperstar wasn't really advanced enough to do this.  In the end, it seems to me like downloading a precompiled binary might have been a good match for this user's level of experience and pluck.
563  Economy / Gambling / Re: SwCpoker.eu | No Banking, Only Bitcoin | Bitcoin Poker 2.0 LIVE NOW! on: October 12, 2015, 07:06:44 PM

Just two questions if you'd like to answer:

1) Can you confirm, as previously said by another user, email addresses associated to our accounts may be changed? If so how?

But if the completely anonymous seller doesn't give you the current password, you will not get in to change it.

This is basically why you should use a neutral, third-party escrow who can receive control of the account and the funds before releasing each one to the other party.
564  Economy / Gambling / Re: Primedice.com | Most Popular & Trusted Bitcoin Game | Huge Community | Free BTC on: October 12, 2015, 07:00:24 PM
I sent a support ticket using the help on the website and within a day, support emailed back. I gave him the necessary information to log in and now I gained access back into my old account. If you are on this forum Mladen, thanks for your help!

I think Mladen = MICRO?

Support is great now, once seemed like an impossible mission.

I've been away for a while and I know that for most of the last year, support from primedice was terribly impacted, so to speak.  I'm glad to hear it's no longer the case.  Tell me, did they end up hiring a bunch of new people to handle all the tickets?

Hi!  As per the op, I see that I should apply first and then add the Sig only if I'm approved.  Here's my application (thanks):

Username: tspacepilot
Current post count: 3865
Current rank: Hero
Bitcoin address:1waLNutzCh3DuwCvHcHmFgGg6vsLiWfn4

Since you already had contact with adzino, thats not really necessary, but nice to see someone read the full rules  Smiley
Youre accepted, set up everything and adzino will enroll you into the sheet with the conditions you two negotiated.

Thanks guys!

Yes, I downloaded the precompiled binaries from bitcoin.org, extracted the tarball and then opened bitcoin-qt by the terminal.
The procedure described here didn't work.
I wonder if that particular ppa isn't updated very often, if that's why the dependencies couldn't be installed (perhaps because newer versions are already installed on your system or something along those lines).  Anyway, I'm glad you got it figured out.
568  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problem on Ubuntu on: October 09, 2015, 08:21:58 PM
I'm glad to see that you got it working.  In the end, you just downloaded the precompiled binaries?

If you can't install from source just download the binaries from bitcoin.org. They work out of the box. Just extract the tarball and run.

Ok. I have downloaded it from bitcoin.org and then extracted the tarball. But which application do I need to run the bitcoin-qt file? I am trying with Ubuntu Software Center but I get an error message  Angry
Open up a terminal in the bin folder and run the following commands
Code:
chmod +x bitcoin-qt
./bitcoin-qt
Every time you want to run bitcoin at, you need to use the second command. Don't close the terminal while the program is running.

Thank you very much Abdussamad and knightdk!
Now it works  Grin

I would like to make a donation to both of you to thank you for your patience and help.

Please send me a PM or reply under this post writing your addresses.
I am gonna make it as soon as possible.

PM sent.

Replied and lets keep the rest of the discussion here mate as the project infos are posted here. If it's affordable i'll fund this project personally and if its not , well im sure we can work something out  Wink
Be sure to use escrow if you do end up trading with him. I would hate to see you get your hard earned btc stolen from you.

Yes definitely mate Smiley

Heya james.lent, it seems like you guys have basically figured out your issues without any services from me, which is cool, I'm kinda swamped at the moment.

About escrow: it's my opinion that a trusted, neutral, third-party escrow is crucial for protecting yourself when trading with someone on the internet.  But can you believe that some people on here have even been caught using themselves as escrow in order to fraudulently collect escrow fees from another party and to farm trust for their alts (ahem)?  Hard to believe what some people will stoop to, no?

Anyway, I don't think this thread is about escrow, so let's try to keep things on topic, shall we Quickseller?
570  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][CLAM] CLAMs, Proof-Of-Chain, Proof-Of-Working-Stake, a.k.a. "Clamcoin" on: October 09, 2015, 06:40:58 AM
That chart took multiple hours to generate, so I don't really want to do that again. It burns my fingers as I type due to the CPU getting so hot.

But I can tell you that "the digger" is down to block 7157 now. So the chart will almost certainly look the same, but with the jump from low to high happening at block 7157 instead of at a higher numbered block.

If I recall correctly he was working backwards in time towards block 0, right?  So if someone could just remind me of approximately how many blocks he digs per unit time again ...  Kiss

I haven't used Ubuntu in a while but debian is my normal OS, which is similar.  Anyway, it'd be helpful if you could cut-n-paste the entire terminal sessions to either a pastebin or to this forum when requesting these kinds of help.  Oftentimes, someone who's very familiar with how the system works will see a specific detail if you post the sessions rather than just saying "it's the same message".  In any case, I'd consider ditching that PPA and just building from source.  On debian I'd get the source version of that bitcoin package and then do builddep to install dependencies.  After that you just make && make install.

Let us see some sessions, please!

Thank you for your reply.
Here is a complete terminal session: http://pastebin.com/7zeuZHHM

I just followed the instructions contained in this website: http://www.distrogeeks.com/install-bitcoin-qt-ubuntu/

Yes, I did take a closer look at your session.  I've run into this problem on debian in the past and usually it's resolved by using dpkg to do the configure step by hand, as knightdk had suggested.  If I were you, I'd look more closely at *why* the packages which is says "cannot be installed" cannot be installed.   Perhaps you get that info with "apt-get install -f"?  I can't recall at the moment.

Do you guys really not want hero members to advertize?  Or should we understand the Sr. member rate to be equal to Sr or above?   Anyway, got any spots left for me?
573  Economy / Lending / Re: Lender's Log! (Check here prior to loaning!!) on: October 08, 2015, 06:29:54 AM
I think it's a good idea. An all in one spot to double check all the loans.

Good idea, but manual lists are hard to keep up to date.  An automatic system would be much better, but hard to implement.

Yeah i agree, maybe tspacepilot could help out with a script.
I am fairly certain that tspacepilot does not give a shit about the community, and as such has zero interest in making such a script.

...says the dude who got caught trust-farming and setting everyone up for a long-con Roll Eyes

Anyway, if someone wants to hire me to write a script for something, they should PM me.

What would you charge for something like this ? Well its also for the community benefit.

PM sent.

575  Other / Meta / Re: Replacing DefaultTrust on: October 08, 2015, 06:12:12 AM
already have effect, or just stayed proposal?

I'm sure that if the proposal had gone into effect then there would be no DT right now, and you would be voting for the users instead.
That's not right.  This proposal was to force each newbie account to choose someone to trust in order to bootstrap the trust system.  You're right that if it had gone into effect, the notion of "default trust" wouldn't exist, or at least not as we understand it.  But there wasn't going to be a vote for users, the beauty of this proposal was that people wouldn't just have the matching trust lists by default which most people have at the moment.

playtodos stops their signature campaign on the 5th of October and they don't accept anymore participants? If so, they will be removed from the OP. No reason to keep them in there.

Hey Mitchell, who said that Playtodos is stopping their campaign?

Thanks.
What mitchell probably misunderstood is that playtodos is not accepting new participants so it should be placed in "CNPF" or Closed For New particiapnts, they're still paying the enrolled participants.

The information comes from me as I received it from Carra23 via PM after asking whether or not I may join. I hope Carra23 can confirm this somewhere public as I will not reveal the PM.
I can confirm this as I was told the same by Carra23 in PM.
Me three.
578  Other / Meta / Re: Requesting-Vod be prevented deleting posts Self Modded thread/Removed from DT on: October 06, 2015, 08:28:50 PM
I think this quote/post is important enough that it deserves it's own post to highlight how Vod acts around here:
archive
I believe I am the true Virtual God, and I have been for the last three years here on this forum.  My afterlife is exclusive - no other afterlife exists.

Like you posted, you need to prove that my afterlife does not exist.

Until you can prove that, your afterlife cannot exist.   Undecided
^^empathizes his

The above shows that Vod literally is going around saying that he is the God of the forum, which is obviously not true.

The above quote and the quotes in the above post are evidence of the lack of respect that Vod shows to those who do not share the same opinion that he has, and that he is not willing to rationally discuss any decision that he has made that negatively affects others.

This this kind of person really someone who is appropriate to be on DefaultTrust? Is the ratings of this person really what we want to see a new user of Bitcoin/the forum to see by default?

(emphasis mine, this time)

I know he's never been good at spelling the "hard" stuff, but since when did QS get a sense of humor?
579  Economy / Gambling / Re: SwCpoker.eu | No Banking, Only Bitcoin | Bitcoin Poker 2.0 LIVE NOW! on: October 04, 2015, 06:36:40 PM
Swc of course has a point thatvsome software is more complicated than others and that when you are handling other people's money, you can't afford to play fast and loose.  I, for one, always noted sealswithclubs as one of the oldest bitcoin sires that never suffered a security breach.

But what I can't understand is how the current state of affairs is an improvement over the old seals running mavens.  In the old scenario, you had a huge player base, playing on Web, Android and windows and basically ruled bitcoin poker.  In the new scene, you have a software that can only be used by a few people, is unstable, and is apparently a bitch to fix.

Can we just have mavens back so we can play poker again?

What's the advantage of CLAM over other existing altcoins? What are the unique features?
CLAMS don't have AIDS. And you cannot catch HIV by downloading the wallet.

I'm not sure those properties are unique to CLAM.  Smiley
