LOL @ anyone long stocks. You better pray for inflation, in which case your money would be better in PMs anyway. I agree it is silly to think of bitcoins as they currently stand as a good store of value, but if ppl want to think of them as a high risk high reward investment that's fine.

You do realize the entire global economy is on the verge of another large tailspin right (by which of course I mean we never actually left the first one, only ignored it for a bit). The longer you delay the inevitable, the more violent the contraction.

thats exactly the attitude i played off of to get make major gains off of the 2008 US stock market crash (my only losing bet was AIB)...ive since cashed 90% those initial profits out (spent it on a carribean cruise last year Cheesy ).

this year isnt nearly as profitable so far, (this weeks global crash ate almost all of the profits in my portfolio) but buying in now sets you up for future gains....im still long, ill sell off one or two positions, but for the most part, i am in it for the long haul....i expect skeptics...had them last time too...until i bought their shares and sold them off at a profit.... Smiley contrarian investing...gotta love it.
1382  Other / Off-topic / Re: the browser you use? on: August 05, 2011, 11:29:41 PM
firefox with a bunch of add ons for general browsing, chrome if i need to do something quickly.
1383  Economy / Speculation / Re: Stock market crash - 5 % overall on: August 04, 2011, 09:26:34 PM

Impact could be on individuals who are long stocks. If they get wiped out / lost a lot of money in the stock market, and have a lot of BTC, they may sell some BTC to get back some cash.
But I doubt that so many BTC holders are also big Stock holders.

i fall into this category.....stocks are my major investment, and im definately long (buy and hold Smiley ). right now my positions are up 1% for the year...saw a lot of profit disappear this week

BTC is more speculation for me (though i have no intention of cashing out anytime soon) and ive only invested a small amount due to risk....

no, not neccessarily. traffic analysis is about looking for patterns in the communications.

for instance (and this is a extremely basic example using callsigns)

if you were to see traffic containing the following  ( > is the direction of communication):

ABC>DEF
DEF>GHI

JKL>DEF
DEF>MNO

and later you see

ABC>XQZ
XQZ>GHI

JKL>XQZ
XQZ>MNO

you can then infer that DEF is likely XQZ

of course the real world application of this gets MUCH more complex and has many more variables, this is just a very basic example. after mapping very large amounts of traffic, you can build a map of who talks to who, and when ; communication hierarchies become apparent. identities can be  revealed in relation to the known identities of others in the communication structure.

1385  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin IS anonymous on: August 03, 2011, 11:54:56 PM
multiple addresses don't matter, it only temporarily obscures things.

the principle works the same as it does with captured military communications (SIGINT/COMINT). with enough raw traffic, you can make communication maps that will reveal who is who, even if you are up against dynamic (constantly changing) callsigns.
1386  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin IS anonymous on: August 03, 2011, 11:16:25 PM
because traffic analysis is time consuming and isnt free

+1    i think that is a great idea.

i agree that getting money into the exchange takes to long....

buuuuuuut, thats why you want to keep some free cash on the exchange to take advantage of the crashes...

It's a solution, but a poor one.  Give the average person two options (we are still trying to make BTC mainstream right?):

A) Keep your cash in an FDIC, interest-bearing account

or

B) Keep your cash in MtGox (security has already been breached) or Dwolla (has blatantly gone against the TOS)

Pretty obvious which one they're going to choose.

honestly, i think a lot of things need to change before it goes mainstream, this is more a solution for todays users..... i wouldnt be keeping anything i couldnt afford to lose in btc or on the exchanges until these growing pains get worked out..its too risky IMO

1396  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is 90% jobless rate possible when robots are used everywhere? on: August 03, 2011, 03:24:21 AM
Technology apparantly has left you behind.  Perhaps in the 70's?

Again, thanks for playing.

just like i thought. you have absolutely nothing to add to the discussion. you've not even attempted to back up your point of view (hint: because you cant) and you haven't made a single response that has any amount of substance whatsoever (unless you count a shitty meme and sophmoric nuh-uhs as substance).

as i said originally, there is no way we can have a rational discussion...someone who holds such irrational and illogical beliefs as the crazy assed shit you've said earlier in this thread isnt capable of it.

so, yeah. im done.

We are being contaminated down to our very genetic structure to make sure we can no longer breed or rise up against oppression.
but good luck with the whole insanity thing, man...dont forget to put on your tinfoil hat (i hear the robot overlords cant read your mind when you wear it)

1397  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is 90% jobless rate possible when robots are used everywhere? on: August 02, 2011, 11:07:42 PM
Sorry to disappoint you, bit the technological gap between the 70's and now is exponentially smaller than the gap between now and the scenario you are suggesting.

You don't seem to have put any thought into what it would actually take to implement and maintain a system like you are talking about.
1398  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is 90% jobless rate possible when robots are used everywhere? on: August 02, 2011, 10:49:39 PM
you really think that level of automation would be possible in 40 years given that we arent even remotely close to it now?Huh? you dont think our current level of technology has any bearing on future technological gains?

not a very convincing argument  Undecided
1399  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is 90% jobless rate possible when robots are used everywhere? on: August 02, 2011, 10:37:46 PM
ok, fine.. ill let you bait me into this.

your scenario of robots building, maintaining, and repairing themselves on a large scale without human intervention is, in my opinion, a pipe dream. have you put any thought into the complexity of the infrastructure would have to be for this to occur??? do you really think its possible to have that level of automation given current technology (and to do in all levels of production in every industry)? not to mention the more complex the system gets, the more that can go wrong..and while robots and computers are great at certain things, creative problem solving is not one of them (at least until AI becomes a viable technology). and theres still the issue of marketing, transporting, engineering, and programming new robots. (unless you think welder robot v1.0 is going to decide to build welder robot v2.0...) after all, the companies making the robots will need to make money...that means they need to create newer, better versions they can sell to continue to make money each year.

i stick by my opinion that we wont reach a level in which human intervention isnt required on a major scale.

thats the answer you would have gotten without the overlord bs, and im still not convinced you can rationally discuss this without bringing up some Illuminati crap.

Nice use of catch phrases and talking points to derail valid points.  Lol you are a credit......  to your Overlords lol.

thank you, you just proved my point.
