1321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone booked a hotel using bitcoin on: May 02, 2020, 08:07:04 PM
Expedia has stopped accepting Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies for hotel bookings from 2018. Please check the facts and then reply. Please read this article
https://www.ccn.com/expedia-stops-accepting-bitcoin-driving-users-to-alternative-travel-sites/

Did you notice my use of the past tense? That means it's no longer the case. The past tense is handy and informative and helps us in day to day life.

For me payment system is not important. I will book hotel which i love, not one that support btc

Yes. Again I'm not going to inconvenience myself just for the sake of BTC. If there's nothing between a place that does take it and doesn't then I might lean towards the one that does. I won't stay in a shithole filled with dying hookers solely because of the payment option.
1322  Economy / Economics / Re: Anybody here trying to live bankless (using Bitcoin / cryptocurrencies)? on: May 02, 2020, 07:57:41 PM
So they're not really "DeFi". (DeFi are blockchain contracts, mostly to exchange risk for potential profit).

No way would I ever depend on DeFi for anything other than the fluffiest of play money. They keep getting hacked. On top of that the 'decentralised insurance' I've read about did not pay out funnily enough.

That's best left to researchers and nutters, no way would I run my actual life through it.
1323  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Buy Bitcoin With Credit / Debit Card. on: May 02, 2020, 02:30:15 PM
but some are old and not so technical so i want to find the easiest way possible for them.

So adding a credit card, no doubt with KYC, on TOP of them sending BTC to you is going to work?

The friction is piling up by the second.

I'd be looking at any alternative myself, maybe gift cards or something. If it's for the sake of the techno phobic you're just adding to their phobia.
1324  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Buy Bitcoin With Credit / Debit Card. on: May 02, 2020, 11:53:13 AM
Binance you need to verify ID provide documents etc?

As far as I know it's a third party service, Simplex, that provides the card purchases and you do have to provide details for them. Non KYC applies for crypto to crypto stuff on Binance. Anywhere that deals with fiat in any form would be very stupid not to have KYC.

Is this a legal IPTV service or a questionable one?
1325  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone booked a hotel using bitcoin on: May 02, 2020, 09:32:12 AM
The simple reason they charge people who pay with bitcoin more will be because of the volatility and unprecedented fluctuations in bitcoin price. You can not predict what happens next even while payment is ongoing, the price can either drop or rise. Nothing is guaranteed.

That's what a payment processor is for.

I will not be subsidising someone else's risk. The tools are out there for them to deal with it. If they can't be bothered to find them or gouge me because they're too lazy to deal with it they won't be getting a bean.
1326  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone booked a hotel using bitcoin on: May 01, 2020, 07:52:17 PM
Most of the websites I ever wanted to buy from wanted to charge me ~10% over the normal prices which adds up very quick. One of the latest attempt was on a quite popular website that tried charging me more than 15% more for paying with crypto (let's not forget the fact that their products are more expensive there than on most other shops anyway) and that's more than exaggerated.

Which sites? Name and shame.

For normal retail gift cards should do the job as long as they're available for what you want, but Bitrefill charges a premium for non lightning network payments.

I haven't come across price gouging too often but when I have it's usually travel related. It could be down to the agent simply piling money on top or they don't have the same margin muscle as the regular brokers like Opodo or wherever.

Either way they won't be getting a satoshi of my business. I ain't no charity.

1327  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-05-01] Twitter Starts Shock War With Bitcoin And Crypto on: May 01, 2020, 07:45:14 PM
Can't say I've noticed anything different. It smells like these people have some sense of entitlement.

I would not be surprised if Twitter did have some sort of anti crypto algorithm churning away in the background. I would've thought the misery/ball ache vs profit ratio was horrifically skewed towards the former.
1328  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone booked a hotel using bitcoin on: May 01, 2020, 07:32:21 PM
You used to be able to do it with Expedia. You used to be able to spend bitcoins in many more places than you can these days. That's hoarders for you.

The problem with a lot of travel options with Bitcoin is that they often charge you more. A lot of the flight places in particular are terrible for adding 30-80 dollars or don't have the usual options at all.

I see no reason to pay more for the honour of paying with BTC.

Travala looks about right though. I might investigate further.
1329  Economy / Economics / Re: Anybody here trying to live bankless? on: May 01, 2020, 04:23:25 PM
If there were a way of avoiding fiat payments completely then I'd do it. Since there isn't then no.

I'd be dependent on third party services to handle that and most of the options in cryptoland aren't competent enough to place my entire life's necessities in. All it takes is one dirty phone call and that debit card you have thousands on suddenly becomes useless.

Why use a shitty 'bank' that could implode any second? May as well use a large and established one.
1330  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Startup funding on: May 01, 2020, 02:54:03 PM
What do you need startup funds for?

Programming costs nothing. If it's for mining then people will mine for themselves.

This forum has a rich and long history of contemptible failure of places that solicited funds. You're going to have to work extremely hard and demonstrate a lot of track record before anyone would dream of coughing up and even then almost no one will do it.
1331  Economy / Economics / Re: Get ready for more tax. Save your BTC! on: May 01, 2020, 02:45:45 PM
Products prices soon is expected to increase as we need to recover from our loss as soon as possible so we can start the normal life again.

The thread should really be about getting ready for more expense in general. A lot of things will be disrupted, some services won't come back, some will have their competition eliminated so will be free to jack prices up, whole areas will be less viable so will cost a shit ton more than they did before.
1332  Economy / Speculation / Re: Peter Schiff speculation, bitcoin will never hit $50k on: May 01, 2020, 11:32:04 AM
This one posted on Reddit has some gold too.

I assume by this point he's come too far to give up now. There'll be a moment where he's simply shitting all over his own panties, and image, but won't be capable of recognising it. Maybe that moment was already long ago.
1333  Economy / Economics / Re: Get ready for more tax. Save your BTC! on: May 01, 2020, 11:05:12 AM
I expect capital gains taxes, the most relevant to Bitcoin fans in many places, to be cranked up.

To the average broke person it's a tax they'll never pay and certainly won't care if the better off are hit with it. They will perceive it as unearned money so it'll be neutral enough to the average voter.

Not sure how the properly rich will avoid it but as ever there'll be a way.

Governments will be desperate to keep spending going so straightforward tax rises on income or goods are less likely.
1334  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-03-05] Power Plant Mines BTC 5.5/day on: May 01, 2020, 10:06:26 AM
Does bitcoin mining pay for the electricity spent?

That's the idea. Only hobbyists and weirdos mine for fun. The majority are in it to make money.

If you can't pay for it and make a profit too then you either have to keep mining and hope you can sell the coins you earn now for more down the line, but not many could sustain a loss over that much time as costs keep piling up, or give up and let someone who is profitable take your place.
1335  Other / Meta / Re: Top reporters! on: May 01, 2020, 01:34:58 AM
What a teacher's pet.

I think my accuracy is about 98 or 99 per cent.

I only report risible dross so would like to know where the virtues of that 2 per cent were hidden.
1336  Economy / Economics / Re: The positive impact ~ on: April 30, 2020, 08:45:07 PM
This will not happen. It's not the first epedimic that ever happened. With previous viruses, nothing changes in infected countries and governance didn't change even they were incompetent. Same things is happening now, at a large scale, and it will finishes then back to normal.
Government will say sorry for losses, make a celebrate day on how it sees itself succeeded, then just forget about the whole story. It's sad, but it will happens.

There's never been anything like this in our lifetimes and hopefully won't again. We've only just begun to see what the effects will be on economies and societies. There's no way of telling at this point.

Certain things will change for good if only because masses of businesses and business models will die off and never return. A lot of things were just about sustainable with a functioning economy. Without one they're permanent toast.

The final bill will be so enormous it'll affect public finances for a generation everywhere. We'd be better off pondering this five years from now rather than during the middle of it.
1337  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC breaks 9k, are we on bull run? on: April 30, 2020, 08:31:05 PM
Pump is thrown out like it is something super edgy and everyone who says it feels smarter. Pump is not something that is billions of dollars worth, these increases are not "pump and dump" they are increases and decreases.

If it can gain or shed $1000 in a few hours I'd call that a pump or a dump. The market cap might be 'billions', the actual amounts changing hands are a fraction of that. Look at the size of order books on exchanges. They're in the tens of millions, not billions.

There's an equilibrium of coins and dollars and it doesn't take much of a fresh injection of either for some outrageously outsized moves. That points to it being a pathetically illiquid market still.
1338  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Question about paypal and bitcoin. on: April 30, 2020, 08:17:09 PM
So p2p marketplaces accept only bank accounts? If that then I can buy a bitcoin with 7,489.64 Euro?

Don't bitcoins need 6 confirmation in order to get fully confirmed?

If there is any possibility of using a bank account then you should abandon the idea of Paypal completely. Even if you can find somewhere or someone nuts enough to sell to you you'll be losing 20-50% to cover their risk. It's overwhelmingly toxic in this scenario.

You'd get more money with him buying a bunch of phones on Ebay and you selling them on here for BTC for a sizeable loss.

Where the risk is gone - you selling Bitcoin and being paid out in Paypal by a reputable company like Coinbase - so are the premiums.
1339  Other / Meta / Re: Top reporters! on: April 30, 2020, 03:49:11 PM
I would like my name removed if a new list is posted.
thanks

Why? It shows you're a good little soldier.

I report plenty of things but only gibberish shitpots, necro shitposts, google translate shitposts, shitty shitposts or blatant scams.

It would be interesting to hear from mods as to how many reports are down to some sort of beef between members rather than straightforward moronic piss taking.
1340  Other / Meta / Re: View forum on mobile on: April 30, 2020, 01:21:58 PM
See? Mobile users are very important to maintain ever since smartphones become the norm. Even Google prompts me to consider setting up AMP for them on my website because they play a huge factor in UX and website ranking.

You can say desktop reigns supreme but we can't bring them outside. And you can forget laptops and tablets because they're still cumbersome to carry around or stick into the pocket respecively.

It would be interesting to know how many more users there would be, or how many would stick around, with a proper mobile interface or app. It must be a sizeable number. Billions of people only have a phone for internet usage. If that was my one and only option I couldn't take being here.
