1161  Other / Meta / Re: How many forum members do you know by real name? on: January 21, 2023, 03:56:08 PM
There is a Scandinavian local on this forum. I wanted to check it out a few years ago, but was disappointed to see that almost no one posts in it. Come to think of it, I don't remember ever hearing from someone that he/she lives in one of the Nordic countries.
It's a shame that many local boards are practically inactive; the Greek one only has a handful of relatively active topics, with a few exceptions such as the Nigerian, Indian, and Dutch boards, among others, even though meetups could be arranged in smaller counties where distances are relatively shorter. I honestly wouldn't mind a Bitcointalk meeting, but I understand that privacy is of outmost importance for most users, so it's unlikely to ever happen even in local groups.
A very interesting question.
I know that two of my friends are on this forum, but they are not active, so I don't know their usernames.
On the other hand, a few years ago, our local, Croatian crypto community had a live gathering, with dinner in a restaurant in the city center.
In this way, I met 7-8 members of our forum, but I don't actually know their real names, only the forum usernames  Grin
So, it is actually not easy to answer this question of yours.
After all, it's not the names that matter, it's the friendships, right?  Grin
That's actually an interesting idea and this is exactly what I was talking about. No identity revealed and you can actually develop friendships that last.
1162  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk on the phone? on: January 21, 2023, 01:27:08 PM
I'm rarely at home, and when I am, I hardly ever use my laptop anymore; thus, my phone is the go-to option. While it may not feature a mobile version, I'm totally fine with that. It may only be an issue if I'm creating a large topic with sources and photos that need to be arranged in order to be aesthetically pleasing and easier to lay out the paragraphs. Simple replies ranging from 50 to 200 words or even more are just fine; longer ones may simply take a little longer to write.

I've seen other forums using specialized software for mobile phones such as Tapatalk, which is convenient but, in my opinion, not necessary.
1163  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 🔥BLACK FRIDAY DEALS 🔥 -> 21% discount on Satochip/Satodime/Seedkeeper on: January 20, 2023, 11:02:10 AM
Hello, I'm deeply sorry for this delayed reply. This thread was not monitored.
Yes, yes and yes, you can use your built-in smart card reader with our Satochip products.
In these laptops, you might also have a built-in NFC reader.

Have a great day.
Thank you for your reply. I haven't bought a hardware wallet yet, so it's better late than never. I've tested it with an old debit card, and at least it seems to detect that something with a chip has been inserted. Is there a more valid way to check that the port is working since, as dbkit98 mentioned, most of these have only been collecting dust? Moreover, one more question, in case you know: do I need any specific software to use it on my computer?

I don't have NFC though, a smartphone would work just fine I guess?

Thanks in advance
1164  Other / Off-topic / Re: How do you measure image width and height ? on: January 19, 2023, 06:06:24 PM
Useful guide, mostly for newbies since I also eyeball the size by making an educated guess based on experience and screen resolution like the previous poster already mentioned. However, I'd like to point out that if you're planning to share confidential information, Lightshot isn't a safe option since their generated URLs can easily be modified and enable you to snoop at others' photos.

I know that the OP is providing a guide in order to help users post images on the forum, but it's easy to keep using it for other purposes too if you install it.
1165  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now? on: January 18, 2023, 04:18:14 PM
Some people on Twitter are speculating that there's a good chance that FTX ends up being solvent after all after selling the shares of FTX Ventures(Robinhood, etc). And add the fact that FTT is currently very illiquid — you can easily get pumps such as this.
That's right, the state of the FTT coin is actually showing some similarities with Terra Luna and USTC, which went through a great number of pumps and dumps that, if you took advantage of them, you could potentially earn a lot of money. We're talking about 10 times within a day. I remember seeing USTC at $0.005, and the next day it was $0.055 and dumped shortly after. If you supposedly had invested $1,000, you'd receive more than $5,000 in less than a day. That's a great yield but a pure gamble; it's extremely risky and nerve-racking.
And speaking of Luna, there are new threads that are popping up lately about it, telling that it is price is showing some increase once again and then their volume looks pretty good. It strange that risky coins like this are seem to make a comeback but many of us thought that they are dying already.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next on the list will be the meme coins but we shouldn't FOMO and join the trend because like I said earlier they are risky coins, so there is a chance that we can get trapped. We must remember that Less riskier coins are recovering now, and maybe won't take for the bull run to come, so better if we can just stick on them.
Some people, including myself, bought large amounts of Luna, taking advantage of the significantly low price with an extremely low budget and without having any expectations. I knowingly bought them, knowing that they were a lost cause, and because I anticipated that people would rush to buy them for whatever reason. However, how are Luna and FTT not dead coins? Both have failed, and their developer is long gone; just because their price might be increasing and there's a possibility of taking advantage of it doesn't mean that it's still alive. There definitely is a possibility to yield large amounts of money, but from my perspective, it's way too risky.
1166  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase closing my account for no reason on: January 18, 2023, 12:30:38 PM
Try contacting them, but there's a decent chance that they won't provide you with a specific reason and will simply answer with a script reply and refer you to their Terms of Service, which is likely to mention that they have every right to close your account at any time. Was your account completely verified? Have you received anything prior to that? You've at least been offered to withdraw your balance; some other exchange or service could have probably seized your money and blamed you for an unreasonable reason.

Unfortunately, this is subject to happen at any time since most centralized services claim in their TOS that they have every right to close your account without having to provide you with a valid reason.
1167  Other / Meta / Re: Bounty spammer meets AI Chat generator. Can they be banned on the spot? on: January 18, 2023, 10:52:40 AM
My guess: he's trying to earn that one Merit needed for a Jr. Member signature for bounty spam.
Wasn't aware that there are bounty campaigns in the altcoin section have such low requirements.

Perhaps we are looking at it the wrong way. Ban the campaign managers and the projects that hire them if they use people who are using spam bots and give everyone in the campaign a warning that they were working with spammers. After a certain number of warnings you would get a ban. Would that be too harsh?

Seriously, I use the altcoin section for a few things and would not be put at all if it went away, so it might be a harsh point of view, but to me it looks like most of the bounty campaigns are a lot crappier then they used to be.

-Dave

Well, it does sound a little harsh, but it depends on how you see things. In general, the most spam and gibberish posts stem from the 1xbit signature campaign (apart from the altcoin section, which you mentioned), and despite the efforts of plenty of users who reported a large number of their posts, the issue remains. Two sections that are filled to the brim with such posts are the gambling and altcoin sections, in which I hardly ever participate; thus, I can't have a comprehensive reason for the spam, but in my opinion, the gambling requirements that campaign managers put in are one of the possible causes. The altcoin section, on the other hand, is filled with bounty campaigns that are attracting newer users or those who are unable to enter the most reputed ones.
1168  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now? on: January 17, 2023, 07:34:49 PM
Yes, that's a pointer. However, there are some investors who are equally buying based on crowd mentality. They believe that since there's a recovery sought of that the token and exchange are likely to bounce back. This is a classical example why no one should follow the crowd. I once bought into a dead project (I mean, the project was already dead but I didn't know) because I saw a momentary price rise and it was cheap. I believe that's what people are doing now with FTT. Since then, I learnt to always visit and verify from every project's telegram handle before buying. This has helped me a lot.
The exact same thing happened with Terra Classic/Luna and its stablecoin, USTC. People are thinking that others will rush to purchase because something positive occurred, and a recovery is imminent or at least probable. And it's how exactly pumps and dumps happen.
This is gambling. High risk, high reward. If you are using this pair on your trade, just be careful, because, of volatility, the price could go up x2,x3 in just a short period of time.

I even saw on Twitter that someone shared a technical analysis with a chart about FTT that they are expecting FTT will go back to $10 after the recent pump.
The reward in some cases may be extravagant, but certainly not for me. Those who are for the thrill will be willing to take such a risk, but personally, I tend to stick to safer options, like holding or even occasionally trading Bitcoin, which I used to do in the past. I could perhaps try it once with a limited amount of money, but apart from that, it's a no-go.
1169  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: It's a shame people still falling for this on: January 17, 2023, 06:01:25 PM
Only greedy people fall for such tricks. Those aren't new tricks anyway. Why will anyone want to reap where they didn't sow? The first time I saw that in one of the numerous telegram groups I was subscribed to was in 2021. It didn't move me a bit even though it was my first experience with such. The reason being that I've a mindset that nothing is ever free, both online and off it. There's always a catch. I always want to find out what the catch is. I was proved right a few weeks after that when someone complained of how they were duped through that method. Don't expect a philanthropist in this industry. They don't exist.
I don't believe that it's only being greedy while being unaware of the danger. I was also almost scammed through a Discord group when I was promised a higher yield on a smart contact. It wasn't greed, but being completely unaware of the dangers and being fooled by someone posing as a group administrator. As funny as it may sound, even experienced users may fall victim under certain circumstances. But yes, for the most part, people still think there's a way to earn money quickly, but unfortunately, there's no such thing. Telegram and Discord groups are filled with these scammers.
1170  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Treat your Bitcoin as if it is already Worth 10x of what it is on: January 17, 2023, 12:36:11 PM
I'm not treating my Bitcoin like it's worth 10x more, but certainly I treat it that way, knowing that it's worth way more than $20,000. To be honest, it has become more of an asset than a currency, and its limited supply also adds to its value. I'm trying to have as realistic expectations as possible and do not expect 5x or 10x returns, at least anytime soon, but I'd be satisfied if it reached $50,000–60,000 within the next two years, which would be approximately double my current DCA.
1171  Other / Meta / Re: How many forum members do you know by real name? on: January 17, 2023, 06:34:16 AM
None, I signed up on the forum in 2014 but had two large inactive periods. Maybe I would have known a few if I was participating in the local board, but the Greek section is quite dead, and I don't see anything interesting there. I've communicated with quite a few members, and in my opinion, some of them seem like great people and have dedicated their time to answering my questions.

I'd love to meet some of them for a beer sometime in the future, but it's unlikely since most of us here prefer the safety of our privacy. From my point of view, this forum has been a great experience so far, and the majority of the members here are always willing to assist and answer any questions.
1172  Economy / Speculation / Re: Did you sell off during the 21k price breach. on: January 16, 2023, 08:47:21 PM
I expect Bitcoin's price won't fall back to $16,000 levels but will settle at approximately $18,000. Unless you're a trader, I don't see why you'd proceed to sell at such a low price; it was just a minor bull run. Perhaps it's a decent opportunity to sell and proceed to buy at a lower price in the upcoming days or weeks, but as a holder, I don't see the reason to bother. Personally, I prefer the safety of holding—not sure for how long, but certainly not planning to sell below $50,000 for any reason. My DCA is a little lower than $28,000, the majority of which is obtained through signature campaigns.
1173  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now? on: January 16, 2023, 07:33:14 AM
I'm certainly not the most qualified person to answer your question but I recently came across an article claiming that the FTX exchange was able to recover 5 billion dollars in assets (including  other cryptocurrencies, cash, and other liquid assets) in an effort to repay its customers, which could possibly justify the recovery FTT is marking.

1174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Keep your emotions balanced especially regarding Bitcoin on: January 15, 2023, 07:27:09 PM
Giving sh*t about a 3% Bitcoin price movement is something only the noobs do.
After dealing with the Bitcoin volatility for several years, you just develop a different mindset. It sucks to see the BTC price dropping severely, but this is the nature of volatile assets. They just go up and down. When the price is down, that doesn't mean that it will stay there forever.
The same thing applies to the price being at a high level. I don't think that Bitcoin would be able stay at a 60K USD level for months and years.
I have faith in the concept of Bitcoin and the Bitcoin Core blockchain. I just don't think that 99% of the altcoins/tokens will exist after 3 years.
A 3% increase is a petty increase after seeing what Bitcoin is capable of. It does feel good to suddenly see your BTC being worth more, but certainly not to freak out. I've accepted that cryptocurrencies are volatile, but this is actually their beauty. The crash of Bitcoin is now seen as an opportunity rather than a failure.

Personally, I've accumulated so much more Bitcoin during the bear market that I've stopped bothering about the market's condition. I used to get extremely frustrated with myself that it was getting the best of me, but I feel a lot better now after fully trusting my money on Bitcoin.

1176  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why Would Anyone Be Against Self Defense? on: January 15, 2023, 05:03:55 PM
Luckily, in the USA, at least from what I've heard, the concept of self-defense is pretty lenient; if an intruder is inside your house and you proceed to hurt him or kill him in the process, you won't be prosecuted at least.

In Greece, however, if someone enters your house with a weapon and you hurt him, you will face criminal charges and go through court. Chances are that you'll be cleared of any charges, but the trial may take years, and it's a costly procedure in both time and money. I can't understand why someone would have the desire to render self-defense illegal.
1177  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Signature Primary Purpose (Advertising or Gift) on: January 15, 2023, 02:59:56 PM
The main purpose of signature campaigns is to advertise and promote a service or product; in our case, it's usually a cryptocurrency casino or a mixing service, and Bitcointalk is the perfect place for them because their audience is being reached. The majority of us use crypto, and a large portion of the forum also gambles; this is an ideal world for both.

It's perfectly understandable that advertisers are after quality users who put some thought and time into their posts, since they are more likely to be read and interacted with by other users. For instance, I often tend to skip posts made from 1xbit's signature campaign since the majority of them post gibberish and spam. With that being said, campaign managers place several requirements and are careful in picking their participants. You're being paid to "represent" the company being advertised in some way; thus, you need to meet certain requirements.
1178  Economy / Economics / Re: These Are the Top 10 Most Profitable Side Hustles in 2023 on: January 14, 2023, 11:02:53 PM
Honestly if you are looking for any side hustle you need to learn something online. Gone are the day when you would learn plumbering, building assistance or any other low jobs, the internet offers more than any one can ask for and you can be your own boss.

In my country we actually have low employment rate because the government has chosen not to create any employment avenue but through the internet many youth has been able to find something to do.

Online jobs are extremely difficult to get, especially the high paying ones. When a signature campaign opens up on Bitcointalk forum look how many people apply within a few hours of only 1 spot. Its usually 100 people, applying for 1  spot. Its very difficult to get high pay work.

You are competing against tons and tons of people because unlike an on the spot employment, people can have multiple online jobs at once, hence why its difficult. If there are any high paying online jobs which pay at least min wage of any modern country, let me know.
It's a pain in the ass to enter a signature campaign anymore. Only minimal positions are open, with the majority of them being due to inactivity or inferior post quality. With new campaigns being introduced only once in a blue moon, the chance of filling a single empty position is extremely vague. Personally, I was lucky to enter Roobet when they were recruiting more members.

Unfortunately, the era of a plethora of signature campaigns is over, maybe for a good reason because lots of smaller ones were recruiting spammers and lower-quality posters. Anyway. The job market online is incredibly tough, as I already mentioned in a previous post. If you're a university graduate, your best bet could possibly be an online internship, which could give you a head start for the future.
1179  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Keep your emotions balanced especially regarding Bitcoin on: January 14, 2023, 09:53:58 PM
That applies to all investments in general. You can't be emotional or you're gonna make mistakes.
It may depend on your motive because as a trader one still needs to keep in touch with the market price to know when to take the next action, bit of one have a long-term investment plan then one can easily look away from the bitcoin price.

Bitcoin price may be very frustrating if not viewed in the right sense and frame of mind, and going by that one should only check price when exchanging bitcoin to the  dollar.

Well, it depends on how you decide to look at Bitcoin's price. Traders, for instance, see market volatility as an opportunity and will continue trading no matter how much Bitcoin is worth. Holders like myself, on the other hand, aren't bothered by the market condition and simply stick to accumulating Bitcoin. That doesn't mean that I'm not monitoring its price or that I don't check how much my balance is worth, especially after this minor bull run, which spikes up your interest. Having said that, I'm not closely monitoring my money, but I haven't left it on autopilot either.

CAPTCHA can block fully automated bot which automatically select thread at random, obtain text from AI (such as chatGPT) and then make a reply using that text. But it's unlikely it'll stop people who copy text manually from website which provide AI service.
There probably is a small number of users who might be using such a bot, but in my opinion, as you've already mentioned, the majority will just stick to manual copy and pasting from AI services. Using a fully automated bot requires some knowledge that the majority of these spammers don't have, while it sounds way too exaggerated. The manual method is far easier and more hassle free.
