1181  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why Would Anyone Be Against Self Defense? on: January 15, 2023, 05:03:55 PM
Luckily, in the USA, at least from what I've heard, the concept of self-defense is pretty lenient; if an intruder is inside your house and you proceed to hurt him or kill him in the process, you won't be prosecuted at least.

In Greece, however, if someone enters your house with a weapon and you hurt him, you will face criminal charges and go through court. Chances are that you'll be cleared of any charges, but the trial may take years, and it's a costly procedure in both time and money. I can't understand why someone would have the desire to render self-defense illegal.
1182  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Signature Primary Purpose (Advertising or Gift) on: January 15, 2023, 02:59:56 PM
The main purpose of signature campaigns is to advertise and promote a service or product; in our case, it's usually a cryptocurrency casino or a mixing service, and Bitcointalk is the perfect place for them because their audience is being reached. The majority of us use crypto, and a large portion of the forum also gambles; this is an ideal world for both.

It's perfectly understandable that advertisers are after quality users who put some thought and time into their posts, since they are more likely to be read and interacted with by other users. For instance, I often tend to skip posts made from 1xbit's signature campaign since the majority of them post gibberish and spam. With that being said, campaign managers place several requirements and are careful in picking their participants. You're being paid to "represent" the company being advertised in some way; thus, you need to meet certain requirements.
1183  Economy / Economics / Re: These Are the Top 10 Most Profitable Side Hustles in 2023 on: January 14, 2023, 11:02:53 PM
Honestly if you are looking for any side hustle you need to learn something online. Gone are the day when you would learn plumbering, building assistance or any other low jobs, the internet offers more than any one can ask for and you can be your own boss.

In my country we actually have low employment rate because the government has chosen not to create any employment avenue but through the internet many youth has been able to find something to do.

Online jobs are extremely difficult to get, especially the high paying ones. When a signature campaign opens up on Bitcointalk forum look how many people apply within a few hours of only 1 spot. Its usually 100 people, applying for 1  spot. Its very difficult to get high pay work.

You are competing against tons and tons of people because unlike an on the spot employment, people can have multiple online jobs at once, hence why its difficult. If there are any high paying online jobs which pay at least min wage of any modern country, let me know.
It's a pain in the ass to enter a signature campaign anymore. Only minimal positions are open, with the majority of them being due to inactivity or inferior post quality. With new campaigns being introduced only once in a blue moon, the chance of filling a single empty position is extremely vague. Personally, I was lucky to enter Roobet when they were recruiting more members.

Unfortunately, the era of a plethora of signature campaigns is over, maybe for a good reason because lots of smaller ones were recruiting spammers and lower-quality posters. Anyway. The job market online is incredibly tough, as I already mentioned in a previous post. If you're a university graduate, your best bet could possibly be an online internship, which could give you a head start for the future.
1184  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Keep your emotions balanced especially regarding Bitcoin on: January 14, 2023, 09:53:58 PM
That applies to all investments in general. You can't be emotional or you're gonna make mistakes.
It may depend on your motive because as a trader one still needs to keep in touch with the market price to know when to take the next action, bit of one have a long-term investment plan then one can easily look away from the bitcoin price.

Bitcoin price may be very frustrating if not viewed in the right sense and frame of mind, and going by that one should only check price when exchanging bitcoin to the  dollar.

Well, it depends on how you decide to look at Bitcoin's price. Traders, for instance, see market volatility as an opportunity and will continue trading no matter how much Bitcoin is worth. Holders like myself, on the other hand, aren't bothered by the market condition and simply stick to accumulating Bitcoin. That doesn't mean that I'm not monitoring its price or that I don't check how much my balance is worth, especially after this minor bull run, which spikes up your interest. Having said that, I'm not closely monitoring my money, but I haven't left it on autopilot either.
1185  Other / Meta / Re: Bounty spammer meets AI Chat generator. Can they be banned on the spot? on: January 14, 2023, 08:54:35 PM
My guess: he's trying to earn that one Merit needed for a Jr. Member signature for bounty spam.
Wasn't aware that there are bounty campaigns in the altcoin section have such low requirements.
CAPTCHA can block fully automated bot which automatically select thread at random, obtain text from AI (such as chatGPT) and then make a reply using that text. But it's unlikely it'll stop people who copy text manually from website which provide AI service.
There probably is a small number of users who might be using such a bot, but in my opinion, as you've already mentioned, the majority will just stick to manual copy and pasting from AI services. Using a fully automated bot requires some knowledge that the majority of these spammers don't have, while it sounds way too exaggerated. The manual method is far easier and more hassle free.
1186  Other / Archival / Re: [BIG LIST] Crypto Debit Cards on: January 13, 2023, 11:50:24 PM
Great list! Thank you for spending your personal time to come up with this thread. I hadn't noticed this topic before.

I recently issued Binance's card, which arrived within 2 weeks, free of charge. I'm not sure if it has been mentioned in the past; I looked through a page or two of responses but didn't see anything in regards to Binance's card. However, I'd like to address my experience with Mistertango a few years ago. Firstly, if I remember correctly, somewhere in 2017, they went through a lawsuit that shut them down for money laundering. They had to shut down a huge number of accounts, if not all of them, and their support was extremely unhelpful during that period.

Fortunately, I was able to withdraw after going through a verification process to certify that I actually own the account to which I was wishing to transfer the money.

There are already lots of online jobs that are in demand nowadays. It's an open opportunity for everyone especially those who want to work remotely and in the comfort of their homes. Skills in these types of jobs could be learned also online through courses and other resources that we can find on the internet.
Enhancing and developing more skills would also offer us more opportunities in the future.
Physical job opportunities are just limited nowadays and the competition is too high despite our good credentials so we better find good jobs with higher compensation online.
The internet is filled with remote jobs now, but it isn't as perfect as it sounds. Generally, they feature IT and tech jobs that aren't available to someone who doesn't have the education and work experience. You mention that competition in the physical job market is excessive; however, that isn't much different in online jobs either, since you're theoretically competing with the whole world. Remote working is great, but unfortunately it's not as easy as it sounds.

I've studied in the economics department but I've yet to find a job in my field. I'm considering the option of online work if I happen to find a position that suits me.
1188  Other / Meta / Re: Bounty spammer meets AI Chat generator. Can they be banned on the spot? on: January 13, 2023, 08:33:19 PM
So...
NotATether, ETFbitcoin, o_e_l_e_o, LoyceV are all against my concept of a captcha.

Let's compromise and do it my way :-)

Seriously, it would be a patch at best to slow it down but other then reporting we have no other option.

IMO it's just a really difficult balance, you want a free and open forum. But you want to control the spammers as much as possible.

Or do you go the other way but no more temp bans for things like that. Using a word spinner you get the boot and that's it. Too harsh? Not sure.

-Dave

I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend, but how are captchas in each post going to help? In the case of LoyceV's report, the reported user has posted four replies in a course of approximately 40 minutes. These posts are certainly made by an AI service such as ChatGPT, as LoyceV already mentioned. I don't see how a captcha would solve that; I don't see the need, since these kinds of services are able to generate a vast amount of posts.

Anyway, to return to the starting subject, I believe that the user in question is likely to be an alt account; I can't find any other reason a newbie would make such a large amount of posts in such a short notice.
1189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Keep your emotions balanced especially regarding Bitcoin on: January 13, 2023, 07:30:16 PM
Honestly, I don't care at all; I'm well beyond that point with Bitcoin. I used to get so emotional and frustrated in the past that I've stopped being bothered by volatility. I'm not planning to sell anytime soon. Certainly, if Bitcoin surpassed $50.000 tomorrow, I'd be pleasantly surprised, but chances are that I wouldn't sell nor proceed to change anything with my planning. Personally, I just fancy accumulating as much Bitcoin as possible without being distracted by the market's fluctuations.

I used to get emotional in the past, which only resulted in me making stupid and repetitive mistakes.
1190  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Store your seed phrase offline on: January 12, 2023, 10:36:17 PM
The notebook method is actually extremely reliable if you're not careless like me. No one will ever bother going through a notebook, and even if someone encounters your seed phrase, they won't realize what it is.
If you have a diary or a notebook you used back in school, that would be a good hiding place for a seed. If the book is already filled with your class notes, you could add a seed in there somewhere. Just don't forget where it is. What you do after is very important. If that notebook is hidden away and someone finds it, that person might consider the content important. Otherwise, why would anyone look to hide it, right? But if you keep it in a visible place, preferably among a bunch of other books then it doesn't look like anything is out of the ordinary.

Another thing worth mentioning. I agree that a thief wouldn't go through your old chemistry notes that you took back in high school searching for a seed. But if you have one of those recovery cards that are given out when you purchase hardware wallets hidden there, the thief will probably consider the card as something valuable. Valuable enough to be hidden like that.

You said that even if someone finds the seed, chances are they won't realize what it is. It's a gamble I wouldn't like to partake in. I saw a link to a video posted on the forums a few weeks ago recorded from a police cam. Anyway, the police was searching the car and belongings of a suspect and they found a piece of paper. The paper contained a list of words written down by hand. I don't remember if it was 12 or 24 words. One of the cops didn't know what it was, however, his colleague commented and said that's that bitcoin thing. It's like a password. People know about seeds, and they will know even more in the future.
No one is going to bother to go through a bunch of school notes, that's for sure, or at least it's unlikely. But you're right, concealing a piece of paper with a 12- or 24-word phrase will make someone suspicious if they end up finding it somewhere well hidden; even if you're clueless, a simple Google search is likely to reveal what it is.

In my opinion, a notebook hidden in plain sight is above suspicion; a bookshelf with school books is the perfect example. However, I believe that we're overcomplicating things. Just write them down in a notebook or two, place them on your desk or bookshelf, and simply don't forget where you wrote them.
1191  Economy / Economics / Re: These Are the Top 10 Most Profitable Side Hustles in 2023 on: January 12, 2023, 09:44:56 PM
Food delivery as a part-time hustle is also not a bad idea; I see a lot of people on social media claiming that it's capable of providing a decent side income. However, don't all these jobs require you to work quite a few hours per week? These are supposed to be side hustles, not a main source of income; thus, if you're working about 40-50 hours a week, isn't it a bit too much to add another 10-20 hours on top of that? I'm sure that this varies from country to country, but I'm referring to the general rule.

Delivering for large corporations, for instance, could be a side hustle since you're basically a freelancer and you choose how many deliveries you do in a day. The exact same rule also applies to drivers, such as Ubers.
1192  Economy / Economics / Re: Every passing year seems progressively worse on: January 12, 2023, 09:01:36 PM
OP, what did you expect will happen when you have a continued global population explosion and also the environmental impact of industries that are growing to provide enough food and consumer goods to those people? We have increased pollution and global warming that are having severe influences on the weather.

This will continue until we destroy our own planet..... or it will decrease when we realize that we are killing our only source of survival. (Many species will die, before things will go better....and that includes human lives)  Angry
Well, the situation we're now living in isn't something that suddenly occurred. Climate change is the result of being careless for more than a hundred years. On the other hand, overpopulation is getting out of hand in third-world countries while the west is suffering from low birth rates. We've ignored these issues for far too long; technology is progressing, but we aren't. The world doesn't need us; we do, yet we still continue to neglect everything despite having access to top-notch innovations to solve these issues.

Overconsumption is a huge issue and for the past decades we've been using more than the earth can replenish in a year.
1193  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Store your seed phrase offline on: January 11, 2023, 07:40:48 PM
Use your imagination? Trust me, this is probably the worst piece of advice. I've lost quite a few seed phrases which I had written in a notebook in the past, thinking I'd remember where it is a year later. Trust me, I didn't have a single clue. Let alone coming up with your own encryption or randomizer of the seed phrase. It's a 99.9% guarantee that you'll lose it.
You shouldn't deviate away from standard encryption methods that have proven to be resilient and work for the majority of people. I agree with you on the part of not creating your own standards or reinventing hot water, as they say.

But misplacing or losing your seed that was written down in a notebook is your own fault. You didn't create something non-standard that failed you. You simply forgot where you wrote down your recovery phrase in the most natural of ways. This could have happened to you with any paper wallet backups. Even if you had a metal seed backup, you could have lost it somewhere or buried it and forgot where. It's your responsibility to remember these things. However, such backup standards aren't unusual in any ways to be avoided and not be recommended.
I'm mostly referring to coming up with your own encryption method, as the previous poster mentioned. As you've already mentioned, standard encryption methods are fine; there's no objection to that.

No method is foolproof, but forgetting the location of my seed phrase is purely my own fault. The notebook method is actually extremely reliable if you're not careless like me. No one will ever bother going through a notebook, and even if someone encounters your seed phrase, they won't realize what it is.
1194  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Store your seed phrase offline on: January 10, 2023, 09:42:57 PM
Pen and notepad is perhaps one of the best options for storing our passwords and seed phrases. As for seed phrases, we can use our imagination and write it down in a way that only you can understand. But this is everyone's business, it's like an additional security measure.

Moreover, I'm not fond of password managers either. I could be wrong, but in my opinion, it's best to avoid third parties in such a delicate matter.

Paper has even more limitations. It burns, it breaks, it can get lost, it can be read by random people if they find it, the ink can be damaged by water...
If you want to use paper make sure to store it in a steel or aluminum, waterproof container. I like storing things in electronic form but I do it offline on good old hard drives. They're pretty robust and can sustain more beating than a memory card or an ssd and can be recovered even after taking some serious beating. The upside is they can be encrypted and can fit more data than a simple piece of paper.
The important thing is to keep the offline at all times and only connect to machines you know are safe. It's really cheap to build a dedicated PC these days. A cheap, small computer cost about 2 times more than a hardware wallet and with some tweaking makes a secure access point.
Both methods have benefits and drawbacks; both can be lost in a variety of ways or even destroyed. I'm yet to apply this myself, but the best option out there seems to be to write it down on a few pieces of paper and hide them around the house, such as under a drawer or a cupboard. You can even use some hints for the locations on your phone; hardly anyone will ever suspect such a thing, and I also find it exaggerated for anything to happen that way.

Being a member since 2017 and I am not even hero.
Hmm, you've been away since 2018, you suddenly wake up and attempt to enter a signature campaign, and now you're surprised that you haven't ranked up while inactive? I'm pretty sure that you never actually bothered to read the starting post of the thread.

Edit: Oh well, the three of us posted simultaneously.
1196  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Louisiana Begins Requiring Government ID to Access Online Porn on: January 08, 2023, 08:21:02 PM
In the US, largest share of subscription fees for online porn platforms comes from deep-red states such as Utah and Nebraska. The reason is that these guys are a bunch of hypocrites. In India, some of the stupid lawmakers had this fabulous idea of banning online porn. The same people who were behind the idea were caught watching online porn using their mobile phone inside the parliament. Even now, porn is banned in India, but it is available everywhere. Instead of watching in porn sites such as YouPorn and Spankbang, Indians have resorted to watching the videos using various telegram channels.

Indian lawmakers are stupid! They have banned porn websites but don't have the technical intelligence to understand that these websites can be easily accessible via a free VPN. So no impact on people really!

Lawmakers need to understand sex is a biological process. It comes naturally! If it wasn't natural, India wouldn't have 1.4 billion population. Seems like some US lawmakers are showing similar type of intelligence as of Indian lawmakers.
Sex is indeed a biological process; porn, though, isn't. It provides unrealistic standards, creating a false image of what sex is about, and can become extremely addictive, with the possibility of suffering from unpleasant side effects. In your case (India), their attempt was useless as it could be bypassed by a VPN browser extension; some browsers even have one integrated (Opera).

The same thing can also be applied in Louisiana's case. People will always find loopholes when they're prohibited from doing something. Furthermore, even if we assume that all websites have been restricted, there are plenty of alternatives that will work regardless. There's no need to go into detail; you get my point.
1197  Economy / Economics / Re: Fiat and crypto and stock is bs, but property is real on: January 08, 2023, 07:04:31 PM
It's illogical to compare all these with real estate. It's like comparing apples with potatoes—the first one is a fruit, the other a vegetable. Yes, I agree, real estate is probably one of the best—if not the best—investments you can ever make. You can sell it, rent it for passive income, use it for yourself, or a combination of them. Whether we like it or not, housing is becoming more and more expensive; thus, real estate will always be a worthwhile investment. The problem is that if you haven't inherited a property, it's nearly impossible to acquire one yourself nowadays.

Exactly. The OP haven't established or have thought that not everybody is capable to own a land or properties these days and convert it to a passive income where you will build a building to make some profits in the future thus getting some benefits as well because the property/land will get more expensive as years goes by. That is why it's hard to own some of it these days because real estate business is not new anymore.

But everyone has the power to own some crypto and stocks because that's much cheaper than owning a land as you can jus by a fraction of it, not wholly, like real estates. But the risks are the same and the owner will still benefit as year goes by.
OP continues to ignore the fundamentals of real estate, namely that you need large amounts of money to get started. Some are fortunate enough to have inherited properties from their grandparents during a time when owning a home was much more feasible. The majority of us in the younger generations, from Millennials to Gen Z, will have a lot harder time acquiring their own house, while taking out a loan to buy a small apartment is out of the question for most of us since these loans may run for over 20 to 30 years, and who knows what happens till then?

Bitcoin appears to be the best shot we have at the moment; it may not be as good as owning properties, but it's something ordinary. On top of that, Bitcoin might be the key to acquire a house in the distant future, you never know.

The OP, on the other hand, continues to post information that is somewhat irrelevant to the topic.
1198  Other / Meta / Re: bitcointalk forum vs OpenAI - ChatGPT on: January 08, 2023, 04:59:42 PM
I also tried generating new topics from scratch, but they were not engaging, and it looked more like an inner monologue than an opening discussion. Although, as you've also mentioned, I'm not too worried about AI-generated threads, but for simple post replies, as it is able to generate somewhat relevant content with just a few parameters. On the one hand, users who'd previously spammed irrelevant gibberish or plagiarized content, which was not engaging anyway, will now post AI-generated replies, which at least won't look like crap. On the other hand, signature campaign managers will have stricter rules, or even worse, their services won't desire to be advertised on the forums anymore.

Also OpenAI is not even available in most developing countries. I get around it by using a private proxy.
Wasn't aware of that but as you've said, you can bypass it with a simple proxy on your browser.
1199  Other / Meta / Re: bitcointalk forum vs OpenAI - ChatGPT on: January 07, 2023, 11:56:23 PM
Alright, a few days ago I claimed in another thread that signature campaign managers must be on the lookout for users who might be using such services, but it might not be an immediate threat to the forum since most users who'd use such a service would perhaps have a hard time entering and maintaining their status in a signature campaign. However, after fiddling with ChatGPT a bit more, I'm starting to change my mind. As the OP already demonstrated, ChatGPT is capable of creating posts out of thin air. On top of that, when I messed around from my phone a few days ago, it would recreate the same answer, but now that I'm using my laptop, it isn't; was my phone, the website's bug to blame? No idea. I've literally generated three to four posts within a few minutes. The posts are completely irrelevant, but I'm guessing that with a few parameters, you could adjust them for numerous threads.

What if more and more users resort to their usage and result into huge non-enganging discussions where everyone is using AI to post? If such people are unable to enter signature campaigns, then it'll probably discourage them enough to not resort to such services.

I'll also quote a few of the generated responses I got.

1200  Economy / Economics / Re: Your way of living the wage what you need to live normal life on: January 07, 2023, 10:58:16 PM
If the government wants to get involved then they have to increase the wages and the needs of the workers for a decent standard of living, but each job has a different salary and they have a life according to their income, even though there are regulations determining the minimum wage but it will not be enough to rent a place because their salary is not enough for that and does not include other main needs that must be prioritized. But some countries for a minimum wage of $250 per month is enough for a year's rent, decent housing and not far from urban areas.
Even if the government pushes for higher salaries for everybody, there are companies that can't follow it because they've got a standard profit and they're not as big as the corporations. So, the ones that will be hurt by this law are those small enterprises. It's either they'll remove their staff and work their assess there as the owners or the employee will just have to accept that no increase will happen upon explanation by the owner. But I know that despite that, there are too many small scale business owners that are also generous.
Salary increases have been quite a controversial subject since inflation skyrocketed. Some economists claim that an increase in wages, at least during a period of high inflation, is a vicious cycle. The increase in wages causes companies to have higher costs; thus, they have to increase their prices, which results in a surge in inflation. Hence, we've only managed to intensify the issue. I'm not sure if that hypothetical scenario is true in practice or a claim made by capitalists in order to justify lower wages. Even if the starting statement is true, I'm more concerned about employers and companies who have found loopholes to avoid increasing their staff's salaries.
