201  Economy / Speculation / Re: 2013 brought us the Megaquake. Are we about to see the 2015 Gigaquake? (SECRET) on: November 07, 2015, 05:40:31 AM
Hey americanpegasus, I can see this SECRET thread being listed under the Speculation forum. It must have been classified wrong by the tectonics research division. It may already be too late but I advise this be moved back to the SEPTUPLE SECRET subforum before everyone learns the truth about the upcoming giga-quake.

We'll miss you lucif. This has been one of the best threads on the forum. Although maybe we can get out and explore the world now rather than constantly hitting refresh.  Smiley Come back soon.

205  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: In light of the NSA's disclosure about ECC, how is cryptocurrency affected? on: November 03, 2015, 09:36:06 AM
Relevant reading from Koblitz and Menezes: https://eprint.iacr.org/2015/1018.pdf

secp256k1 is a Koblitz curve.

Abstract. In August 2015 the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA)
released a major policy statement on the need for post-quantum cryptography
(PQC). This announcement will be a great stimulus to the
development, standardization, and commercialization of new quantumsafe
algorithms. However, certain peculiarities in the wording and timing
of the statement have puzzled many people and given rise to much
speculation concerning the NSA, elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), and
quantum-safe cryptography. Our purpose is to attempt to evaluate some
of the theories that have been proposed.

One possibility:

5.5. The NSA has a political need to distance itself from ECC.
There were some peculiarities in the release of the August 2015 statement
about preparing for post-quantum crypto. Normally all of the big corporations
that do cryptographic work for the U.S. government would have been
given some advance notice, but this was not done. Even more surprising,
the NIST people were not asked about it, and even researchers in IAD were
caught by surprise. It seems that whoever at the NSA prepared the release
did so with minimal feedback from experts, and that includes their own
internal experts.

This suggests that the main considerations might not have been technical
at all, but rather Agency-specific — that is, related to the difficult situation
the NSA was in following the Snowden leaks. The loss of trust and credibility
from the scandal about Dual EC DRBG was so great that the NSA might
have anticipated that anything further it said about ECC standards would
be mistrusted. The NSA might have felt that the quickest way to recover
from the blow to its reputation would be to get a “clean slate” by abandoning
its former role as promoters of ECC and moving ahead with the transition
to post-quantum cryptography much earlier than it otherwise would have.

As you may know, I didn't exactly roll a natural 18 under the Arithmatic stat: https://np.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3fgrk5/how_long_would_we_have_to_use_bitcoin_before_we/ctomj9y

Good find. Read this back in high school in the late 90s which got me into this stuff in the first place.

212  Economy / Speculation / Coinbase >$50k daily limit on: July 15, 2015, 03:18:13 PM
Anyone try to get their limits increased? I'm in the waiting period at the moment after submitting my request. I feel safe selling coins on Coinbase (I don't trade), but what are current thoughts on other exchanges? OKCoin doesn't work to US bank accounts. Finex and Stamp seem ok. BTC-e doesn't allow transfers to US bank accounts. Then again Finex has been hacked and Stamp volume can be a bit thin... always good to have backup solutions ready with fully verified accounts.
213  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / CVE-2015-3641Bitcoin DOS on: July 15, 2015, 03:12:58 PM
Any word on when this will be released? I'm curious it hasn't become public yet by viewing the github. That said I agree it was a wise decision to hold off on full disclosure longer given the reasons gmaxwell mentioned in his post to the -dev list. mempool attacks, bip66 fork, imminent 0.11.0 release... Looks like listening nodes of 0.10.2 and 0.11.0 are ~50% of the network as of this moment.

Pieter has updated the 2k graph to show the first possible time of 95% at v3.
216  Economy / Speculation / Re: Analysis never ends on: June 30, 2015, 10:08:15 PM
Also the difficulty rises have slowed down since June 2014 when we were getting double digit percentage increases in difficulty twice a month : https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty

The hash rate has been relatively stable now for the last four months which makes miners happy. This combined with the halving in the late spring/early summer of 2016 has the effect of tightening up coin supply.
217  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BIP 66 status on: June 08, 2015, 03:38:15 AM
BIP66 has been activated. Enforcement still pending.
218  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: June 04, 2015, 06:20:32 AM
This thread still being spammed by shills nearly 6 months after FC's last post? Guess the AM name must be worth big heap coins Wink

Not anymore.. They are nothing but scammers in crypto community now. Useless bankrupt company. Something like GAW. But since they scammed big time however, their deeds will be remembered for a while.. Roll Eyes

Their deeds will in deed be remembered, the first company to deliver the holy grail of ASIC chips taking us from a network vulnerable to the mighty supercomputers of the banks to by far the most powerful network in the world and making investors huge profits in the bargain. Shame about all the poor fools that thought they'd get rich quick at 5 coins a share but seriously, anyone that thought 25% of the network was going to last would likely buy Bitcoin Savings and Trust too Wink
Almost 50% at one time, no? There was a time people were afraid of ASICMINER owning the network... how times change in the world of bitcoin.

"We're told we need safety; which is precious, yes,
but can a society that can enforce all its laws ever progress?

Hindsight shows that many figures guilty of "thought-crime"
turned out to be luminaries and heroes, before their time.
But if a surveillance state had reigned then in this form and design
Just think of all the progress we may've all been denied..."
