Embarrassingly dumb question: If using localhost, there's no risk of password-sniffing on http? http://user:password@127.0.0.1:8332/That kind of traffic never even leaves your box, correct?

bitcoin:// is as standard as bitcoin: but as you noted more readable and much more psychologically acceptable for a layman due to similarity to http://
I thought something quite opposite... I thought the reason for using bitcoin: was that it's more psychologically acceptable for a layman due to similarity to mailto:

This syntax is really awful... and the amount format... no comment.
The hex notation is optional, you can use decimal amounts too.

I see what you're saying, however a URL is a Uniform Resource Locator... i.e. It's for locating a resource (retrieving data). That's why I don't think the URL-look is appropriate for actions, like making payments.
Edit: Also, in your example, how would you launch the payment window with a blank amount? (eg. A link to Luke-jr's bitcoin address, with his name pre-filled, but with an amount to be chosen by the person clicking the link).

I posted a similar plan just recently, and in reply someone told me that details of a URI scheme are already on the official wiki... sorry I don't have the link. Edit: Here it is... https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/URI_Scheme

can I spread these images like if they were genuine? Sure, it's a free country!* *depending on your country. Results may vary.

I emailed umart.com.au... maybe it's a long shot but worth asking anyway.

Here's another quick one

I have found when presenting a new idea it's good to completely leave out the technical side of things, you don't even need to briefly explain why it's secure, just make the assumption that it is all those things in your non-technical explanation, leave the explaining to the technical side. I agree, which is why I thought 'WeUseCoins' should receive the full bounty for their non-technical video.

(Sorry, it's fake, but it's nice to dream!) Anyone else care to have a shot? I'd love to see someone else's attempt at realism in this manner. Put it anywhere... t-shirts, tattoos, bus or bus-shelter advertising, as long as it looks quite real! I'll pay 1 btc for each good one... (Still don't have many to give out yet!)

WARNING: Digging up old thread.
Did you ever end up re-listing, and how did the auction turn out?
Well here's a non-qualified 'yes' from someone who hasn't been around for a whole month yet.
Why would you think somebody would purposely cheat the poll?
Uuuuh, friends of someone who's about to get either 4000 or 8000 btc?
Bitcoin is much harder to understand [than PayPal].
I agree. My argument was do people need to fully 'understand' it in order to make use of it? I don't understand how chlorine affects microorganisms, but it sure is useful for keeping the pool clean.
I voted for 'half' but have now changed my mind and choose 'YES'.
When people started using PayPal, it didn't take a technical video explaining all of the background processes that had to be laboriously worked out for it to work.
General users just need to know enough to use it, not to start a career in cryptography.

As much as I like the name "payto:" I think "bitcoin:" makes more sense. Plus it's pretty much standardized at this point, see URI Scheme on the wiki. Oh cool thanks, hadn't seen that page before. Glad to see it's been thought of anyway.

...Hehe except that 'typing' anything into an ATM is "like, soooo 10 minutes ago". Perhaps your phone should display a QR code or something for scanning at the ATM... slightly quicker and less fat-finger-prone.
Good stuff... how about instead of an ID or card you just have to type in a disposable one-time pin number that gets displayed on your phone screen when you made the transfer?
I like the idea though, nothing gets people interested like free money.
Could use a similar idea to get help identifying people/things/songs for BTC reward money. (eg. "5 btc to whoever tells me the name of the actor in this photo" *uploads random pic*).
