Change it's IP address so it's on the same subnet as the rest of your home network. Example if you're using the 192.168.1.x subnet give the avalon unit an ip address between 1 and 255..ie 192.168.1.111 or something. To change the avalon's ip address go to the "Network" tab in its admin web interface.

I bought a 703n to test drive before my Avalon arrives.  I really like it, it's as much computer as you could get anywhere in 1990.  Ahem, anyway...  Last night, I forgot my password.  It turns out that OpenWrt has a fail-safe boot sequence.  You can hold in the reset button while the lights are flashing on the power up, and it will begin rapid flashing, and allow you to login on the 192.168.1.x network, as root, no password.  There are more pages to Google for what to do from that point.

so is all that's needed to make it equivalent to the Avalon pre-installed 703n is to flash with firmware?

The stock device has 32 Mb of memory.  I think the Avalon has been modified to have 64 Mb.
I have not yet flashed mine with the Avalon software.  I'm taking baby steps.
There is also a hardware mod mentioned in one of these forums.
Still, at about $25, I thought I would get one and explore it.

1323  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Somebody is trying to steal batch 1 Avalon shippments from DHL! on: April 02, 2013, 02:21:18 AM
I can't understand why anyone thinks this is Yifu's problem.

Someone posts enough information here to be social engineered at DHL - definitely not Yifu's fault.

Then you're foolish enough to announce it here so that the thief won't show up for pickup at the bar they rerouted it to.  Why didn't you get DHL security to ship an empty box and have the cops waiting for whoever claimed it?

After the shooting, I learned how detectives think.  Few people here think that way.  It is not natural to us.
1324  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Somebody is trying to steal batch 1 Avalon shippments from DHL! on: April 02, 2013, 02:18:47 AM
No need to panic, no need to be anxious, but tracking numbers provided at shipment will make everybody safer and will reduce the noise. There should be a way of getting that.

A good friend that I admire says that breakdowns are business opportunities.  There is a problem shipping.  I have students who are majoring in business and are from mainland China.  I don't know why they took Chemistry.  Anyway...Hmm.

If you are unhappy, fix the problem for everybody.  If you are not willing to fix part of the problem, shrug.
1325  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Avalon ASIC Batch #2 Income Sharing [cancelled and reopened] to fund #3 on: April 01, 2013, 05:01:28 PM
Looks like 3 people have placed bids now. How long will this auction be open? If you don't raise enough, will all amounts be refunded, or will the bids be honored?

I have already fully paid for the Batch #2 machine, so I can deliver on my promise from the very first coin that was bid, and all the winning bids will be honored.  As a policy statement, even a 1 Satoshi winning bid will be honored.  I am betting on a stronger auction.  LOL.  If I were primarily a marketing guy, I would title this thread 1% of Avalon from 1 Satoshi & up.

I have stayed up late wondering if I need to announce a closing time.  I know that some people want to have very rigid rules about such things.  I don't know.

It is not relevant, but I thought I might mention that I lived in the French Quarter, New Orleans some years ago, and the bars there don't close.  The people there think it that a closing time causes people to chug drinks, drive drunk, act reckless, and be dangerous.

I can imagine different scenarios that I need to handle, but I still don't know how I will decide.

1.  There are plenty of good bids, and another bid comes in.  I increase the number of shares in the auction, and the number of bids that I accept.  I probably keep the auction open.
2.  The lowest bid really is for 1 Satoshi.  I really want to keep the auction open.
3.  The machine arrives.  I could just start it up, and make the first payment with no announcement or fanfare.
4.  Someone asks to be let out.  Sometimes there are compelling personal reasons.
  a. Keeping the auction open will let this happen without special intervention.
  b. Keeping the top 1 or 2 unsuccessful bids for several days before making the refund lets them become successful again if I do make a refund.
5.  I just throw a dart at the calendar, and announced a closing time in advance.

Of course, please feel free to discuss this.  You may mention something important that I haven't thought of.

1326  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Avalon ASIC Batch #2 Income Sharing [cancelled and reopened] to fund #3 on: April 01, 2013, 04:32:05 PM
My understanding is:

Money sent to this address represents 10% of a Batch 2 Avalon.

Each bid put in represents 1% of output regardless of how much the bid is.

Only the top 10 bids will each get 1% of output.  The rest will get refunded.

Auctioning off this 10% is a way to value the investment of the original offer, where people paid .8683 BTC per 1% share.

Yes.  Although as an editorial style I try to say either bitcoin or USD.  In this case, bitcoin.
Each bid, yes.  Not each transaction.  The total amount from each send address is 1 bid.
Yes, & yes, refunded.
Hmm.  I suppose.  Or perhaps it is a way to let me imagine I could have made untold riches "if only."  In a closer more pragmatic sense it is a way to value this 10% under the current market conditions.

1327  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Avalon ASIC Batch #2 Income Sharing (2nd deal) on: April 01, 2013, 01:22:26 PM

Edited 2013-03-29 19:28:07 UT

I just made a deposit of 7.680025  BTC into the account.  The first deposit, 0.9906 BTC, is also mine, so I have 9.985748 shares.  These shares will be paid just like the others, and are the mechanism to guarantee the electric bill and other expenses.  In time, I will make another payment so that I own exactly 10 shares.

I have made the adjusting payment of 0.012375 BTC so that I own 10 shares in the original offer.

Quote
At this time, I will stop accepting payment to account 17Pq8oPtk8rikxZhF1wENFqR9YtDyLyr8E.

I will open a new account to sell additional shares.  I will post those details below.

The new address is 17DCms43Vu2yusDjmpjHJuZihSSWkNzgSH
I have seeded a tiny payment, 0.04965694 BTC, to this address to be sure things are working.

Anyone may submit a payment in any amount at any time to this address.
The address initially represents a total of 10 shares.
The 10 incoming addresses that send the most total bitcoin will each have 1 share (1% of the mining income)
N.b. it does not matter how much the total of payments is, 1 address gets 1 share.  It is a multiple winner auction.
I can't tell if 1 person sends payments from several addresses.  Just letting you know that I know.  I think focus is a better strategy.

For each epoch, I will decide whether to increase the total number of shares represented by the address, or keep it the same.
From time to time I will refund payments from addresses that are not in the top cut.

A question came in on the status of the first deal.  Nothing has changed on that deal.  If you bought 1 share representing 1% of the mining output, you still own it.  I still hope everyday to receive news that the Avalon has shipped.  I am doing behind the scenes preparation to bring it online.

The only news there is that I'm not letting anyone else buy in at that price.

But I think that deal is undervalued.  I don't know what the market value is.  So I am holding an auction on another 10% of the mining output.  I notice that no one has bid.  That really surprises me.  At the moment, a bid of 0.01 BTC would buy a share.  I thought there would be a feeding frenzy.

1328  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Looking for system integrators for new asic on: April 01, 2013, 05:26:51 AM
Until someone actually asks for money it would be premature to even consider this as a scam candidiate.

We can take a closer look if/when the integrators start putting up their finished products for sale.

We need a label like "the boy who cried wolf" as much as we need a "scammer" tag.
1329  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- Seven 4 module Avalons ordered] on: April 01, 2013, 12:18:17 AM
Also just signed up, no confirmation mail will come through though. Maybe its the exchange filter catching it before it hits my inbox or something.

You have my email already though so I don't think this will be a problem Wink

My confirmation also went to Google's spam folder.
1330  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- Seven 4 module Avalons ordered] on: March 31, 2013, 03:07:45 PM

I also feel this way. I'm not sure how to solve the problem. My money was invested in the first unit.
I had a 10%~ investment on it. I was very likely to get my ROI in the first month. Now I have roughly 1% share. I'm not likely to see my ROI until the very last unit is received and mining. Depending on how avalon ships, it could be less then a few weeks from the first to the last unit. But its likely going to be much longer.

I don't understand your concern.

If you had 7% of the 1st unit, and there were 7 more units added, you would have 1% of 7 units.
It is the same expected income and ROI.

The trade off is that you will still have income if your machine is DOA.
You will also have less income if another machine is DOA.

Obviously, The Magnificent Seven.

Obviously  Cheesy
Or maybe the original that inspired Sturges, "the Seven Samurai"?

"Find hungry Samurai"

Don't know why it take us so long to do simple thing as this.

It's because we don't have a jazzy groupname yet. We need that to identify with.

Seriously though, it's probably because the group became way larger than expected and things escalated and CH has been busy with making sense out of his administration. It's a good idea to delegate some tasks (such as a site/forum) to several others.

Obviously, The Magnificent Seven.

Yo! Look Here!  This is an auction.  It is open now!

The auction partially ends on or about Friday, May 10, 2013
To be considered, your bid must be included in or before block 235,532.  If you are low on time, tip the miners generously.

  • Profitability decline per year: I would suggest to insert 0.3 or lower (difficulty will raise fast. For my own calculations I usually use 0.1)

I think this is reverse. 0.3 means in next year you are expected to earn 30% less. So, 0.1 means 10% less (i.e., you retain income level at 90% of first year). So, to be pessimistic, put in higher value.

No, it does not work like that. Play with that variable in http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/ and you will see

Does anyone want to predict delivery date for the Batch #2 devices, or perhaps give an update on the anticipated earnings per share?
1335  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: March 29, 2013, 10:29:53 PM
anyone buy an avalon???  i bought 1, wanted to buy another Sad

When did the avalon batch #3 finish? It seems I've missed it Sad

It is out of stock now.  That is not the same thing as "you missed it" because weird things happen whenever you have several hundred people involved.  Check every day.

1336  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- Seven 4 module Avalons ordered] on: March 29, 2013, 10:28:21 PM
And the can of worms has officially been opened.  Good luck CoinHoarder!

Indeed!

To make it more interesting, I just sent in 2 BTC to the original address and asked to be wait-listed.

can we close this thread as inaccurate?

Nah.  Buy now.  Wait for the next crash.  Repeat the same posts.
1338  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- Seven 4 module Avalons ordered] on: March 29, 2013, 06:44:47 PM

Yes, I think CH did something the community wanted.  He laid out his terms, people accepted, his transparency is high.

IMHO people who crash other threads and spread FUD take away from everyone's bitcoin experience.  I even had someone in this thread accuse me of collusion when I reported that CH returned my payment.  (I tried desperately to get coins back to my sending address and get back into this offer.  I just didn't think forward enough.)

I don't like FUD, I want to remind people that the worst cases can be reported.

I think it's part of the experience and there are situations where FUD could even save the day. Unreasonable people can be challenged or ignored, but I don't think censorship is the best way to go.

It is a deep dilemma for me.  I am very opposed to censorship.  I am very opposed to FUD.  I want to be clear that I don't include hard questions or documented facts to be FUD.  FUD is either deliberate, such as a tactic to destroy competition, or just untrue unjustified speculation while also depraved indifference to a healthy marketplace.  I view it as evil.

I don't include hard, but healthy questions as FUD.  The whole sub-discussions about power consumption and insurance, for example, are healthy conversation.

1339  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- Seven 4 module Avalons ordered] on: March 29, 2013, 05:21:49 PM
They would have no time left for anything else if that was the case prof.

1340  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- DO NOT SEND FUNDS] on: March 29, 2013, 04:38:20 PM
OP - I do not have any more BTC, but I can offer to send you USD if you can convert it to BTC, I would like to get into your pool as well. If one of the motive was to divide the risk, and you have more BTC, then you can take up my offer.

this is crazy. people cant give their money/btc fast enough to this guy... this has epic fail written all over it. i really hope your batch 3 shipments arrive well before bfl's 'product'

tldr; btc NEVER goes down in price, avalon batch 3 will ship long before bfl, pep's have more dollars than cents.

gl coinhorder, hope to never have to see that scammer tag under your handle...

I think the bitcoin community should start reporting to moderators all primarily FUD posts.
