1381  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 25, 2013, 10:35:43 AM
And nobody is bitching about them delaying and building a mining farm for themselves.... wow...

Honestly l am not happy about the price of batch 3 avalon but did you actually read the newsletter?
It said they would either  farm for a month OR raise the price of the units and leave it up to the community.
Realistically they could mine new each unit for 1 week  and call it ' testing'  then ship selling them at $2000 usd and be in just as good of a cash position.*I wish they would do that*

true, sorry, misunderstood the sentence in the email.

When they "leave it up to the community" is there a survey or a discussion forum somewhere?
1382  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [AVALON] - I got my ASIC Thread (Batch #1) on: March 23, 2013, 09:56:18 PM
No idea, I just remember Yifu or Zhang posting at some point about how the casing is designed to be part of the heatsink. And I noticed how well the units clamp down on each other if you stack them. It was obviously intended that way - when you stack several units on top of each other, the outer casing of the stack becomes one giant heatsink.

This is correct, the "bolt" exclusion from top of one unit's case fit directly into the "socket" of another unit's bottom plate.

Excellent. That will make for one very practical setup - just stack all your units on top of each other. There might be minor differences in temps as the one at the bottom will draw in relatively cooler air, but the differences should be minor.

By the way BitSyncom, I must say I like the case design and appreciate the fact that it's solid aluminium - it is very sexy in an raw industrial design sort of way Smiley

Now excuse me while I go and rub my hands all over it...

Rub it for me too!
1383  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 22, 2013, 05:49:02 PM

Dump our btc just to see what some dude will do with his price ? That will be like shooting yourself in the foot for fun. Smiley

Why would anyone buy avalon at 88btc if by the time it gets to you you could have traded 88btc on exchange several times and made 88btc every 2-4 weeks without avalon?

Can you double your money every few weeks by trading?

If you had a crystal ball you could double your money every couple days.

the problem with bitcoin right now is it's volatility. It could double in value, or it could halve. it could be worth a fortune, or nothing. It's not slow swings either. it goes way up, or way down very fast.

I'm pretty sure a hindcast with perfect prediction and zero market disturbance would make very good return.  I just thought you had said you were actually getting that sort of return.

1384  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: March 22, 2013, 04:03:44 PM
they are breaking like a 1$ toy from china

Some machines arrived with an older firmware that needed an update. Some machines had a connector come loose in transit

But in general, most machines run pretty stable and are reliable

Quote
root@avalon02:~# uptime
 14:56:54 up 3 days, 13:11,  load average: 0.04, 0.06, 0.04
root@avalon02:~# cat /etc/avalon_version
20130218-232ae13

The only reason why I rebooted it was because after running for 10 days at the default speed, I decided to try to run them at 300 instead of 282. You can see the bump in speed around 19 March.

(at 2 points the machines were pointed to a different pool for testing for 3 or 4 hours)

So no, they are not breaking like a $1 toy

Thank you for posting.  Data makes me feel in touch with reality.
1385  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 22, 2013, 04:02:11 PM
Has Avalon sent a really nice fruit basket to Butterfly Labs to thank them for allowing them to be able to extract these rents from the market?   Do not get me wrong, I completely agree with what Avalon is doing as it makes perfect sense (and actually may make this a more orderly business as people will have to think for a minute before pulling the trigger).

Buy Bitcoins because they are going nowhere but UP as people will need to buy more than they expected.

I wonder if Avalon would still ask for 88btc if the price of BTC dropped to $40 or even less. Hey, as a group can we make that happen?

The new FinCEN regs are going to put BitFloor out of business.  Adios, 12 BTC...

Oh?  What are the issues you see?

I'm concerned about this, too. If Bitfloor doesn't have the required licenses, and is forced to buy the new license AND show that they have $100,000 in liquidity, which may be impossible for them to do, they may be forced to shut down, and everyone who was owed any BTC will be screwed.

Is there anything official from Bitfloor out there to let us know what the situation is?

I read the Texas Banking Commission rules some years back when I thought I might want to start an exchange with SLL/USD, but nothing that might apply to Bitcoin in the present.  I think I was dismayed then when an internet bank needed $10,000,000.

But I assume that the liquidity could come from investors.  If you think he needs it, and you have a strong interest in keeping his business alive, you might be forming a consortium and seeing what funding that consortium has the will to use, so that you are ready to act if the opportunity presents itself.
1387  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 22, 2013, 01:12:40 AM
If you owned Avalon how much would you charge?

Who do you figure owns Avalon? He who did the work or they who put up the money?

I have 49 Dell computers and 8 Dell Servers here at my company, I did not find share certificates in the box they were shipped in.   They charged my credit card and received my funds sometimes as much as a month before they sent them.   Let me know where I should apply for my equity in their firm.

Those Dell computers existed at the time you ordered them.

I was looking at books published in Gàidhlig, and there were several pages printed in the back of the subscribers.  These are the people who paid the printing costs of the book before it was printed.

1388  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB In Hand Avalon Asic on: March 22, 2013, 12:51:37 AM
search on ebay for avalon asic...there is like 5-6 auctions going for preorders lol

Here is a very strange eBay item.
1389  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB In Hand Avalon Asic on: March 21, 2013, 09:38:07 PM
A batch 2 pre-order sold for $20.6k:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181105056846

Just cause it finished doesn't mean it's going to be paid for. I actually bid 17k on that with no plan on paying for it just to see if someone was crazy enough to go higher.

You are telling the whole bitcoin community that you deliberately violated the eBay rules, good auction etiquette, and were willing to greatly inconvenience the seller and anyone who would view the auction results.  That's pretty crummy.
1390  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Physical Bitcoin on: March 21, 2013, 09:30:16 PM
I wonder about printing a physical bitcoin at Shapeways, with the private key contained inside it.

The key could be a PGP armored printout, or whatever the equivalent is in bitcoinland.

Whoever handled it could not use the numbers.

This is probably unworkable.  I have had too much coffee.

Uh, printing the key inside so that you'll have to physically break it to see the code?  Huh

Yes.  Though now I think scratch 'n spend instead of 3D printing.

1391  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 21, 2013, 05:51:38 AM
Avalon ASIC just sold on Ebay for 15.000 USD - so much for auctioning them. I stick to GPU mining, you guys go ahead and destroy the BitCoin mining ecosystem with your greed. Low Watts is good for real ecosystem -Mother Nature- tho.

The winning bid was USD 20, 600.  I'd say it's a reflection of the greed of miners more than anything else.  Whoever bought it didn't do so to secure the network.

Avalon probably didn't even make a profit on the sale of that Batch 1 unit.  The original purchaser cleaned up and the person they sold it to is hoping to clean up too.
Link? How can the seller be sure he will not be scammed by the paypal ecosystem?

Just noticed it's a Batch 2 order which has been sold.  Not sure what e-Bay's policy on that will be if there's a problem.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181105056846

Now I'm tempted to put my Batch #2 on eBay.
1392  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 21, 2013, 04:16:01 AM
what a pitty.... missed batch #2 because I was unable to get my money converted to BTC fast enough and now when I did read about batch #3 on monday I went on and bought BTC but only calculated with 1599$ like it was for batch #2 -.-

I completly understand the position of Avalon team, but the risk for the customers is a bit too high for me now. (But I'm looking for joint ventures if anyone is interested...)

A joint venture requires trust also.
1393  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 21, 2013, 04:04:17 AM

Like I said, I really wish the BTC to crash once you have your ordering started - will see where your lecture goes.

Haha, so much hate, what did you miss out on batch #1 and 2 or something? Willing to make a comment based on the negative outcome of Bitcoin as a whole just to get at me.

I do not hate you. I do not even know you. I am a new comer in BTC market, and certainly was prepping my investment based on previous batch prices, so I expected something in $1800 range. I do not have BTC mined from earlier, so purchasing BTC with usd at 64+ is out of my capacity.

With the strategy change from accepting USD to BTC, potential customers and newcomers like me are screwed, without any hope to get into mining, since other than ASIC every other h/w is outdated.

The strategy of taking BTC is making sure, the people who bought batch 1 or 2 will keep on buying with the produced BTC (or the old time miners), and does not welcome new comers. Are you expanding the market with that ?

To be fair, why don't you give both choice of paying in BTC, or equivalent in USD ? Then there would be a fair chance. It is extremely hard to collect USD and then convert to BTC. Does that make sense ?

What I have been saying is purely my feeling as a new entrant in the market, who feels that he is out of option, just because this pay with BTC thing.

Again, I do not have anything personal with you or anyone at Avalon, so please do not take in that way.

Never give up.
If you have $1,500 that is more or less equivalent to BTC 23.
If you can make a consortium with 3 additional people who have $1,500, your consortium can purchase a batch 3 machine.
Don't complain: plan for success.
1394  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I am a certified Anti-Money Laundering agent. (AMLCA) on: March 20, 2013, 05:58:24 PM
I feel like this could be an attempt to regulate gold farmers (e.g., WoW Gold) just as much, if not more than bitcoin. I was going to re-read the posted "new rules", but couldnt find them in a quick skim and am too lazy to look more.

Anyways, is this a possibility? Could some major player in the entertainment industry be pushing and lobbying to get their way again and this just happens to also fit the same bill for bitcoin? If so, how does this apply to game cards? For example, if I buy a League of Legends card from Walmart, that is a specific and exclusive voucher to redeem Riot Points, a virtual currency. Will Walmart have to stop selling these cards?

New Idea:  How can it be attacked?

Print little tickets like the scratch off lottery tickets that some states sell.
The scratch off goo covers the private bitcoin key.  The pay-to address is visible, both human readable and QR code, like the paper wallet.
At checkout, the Walmart cashier activates the card with the amount of cash desired.

One weak point I can see is that someone at the printing company can acquire the private key.
1395  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: [ANN] FIX gateway available on bitfloor.com on: March 20, 2013, 05:20:36 PM

It seems that the cert file that can be downloaded from the fix api page has expired and does not actually match what is currently used on api.bitfloor.com.
You can get current cert file with following command:

openssl s_client -showcerts -connect api.bitfloor.com:5252

From the output copy the lines starting from -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- up to and including -----END CERTIFICATE----- and save those to the .crt file
that is in stunnel configuration.

my first tip!

1396  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 20, 2013, 02:59:28 PM
We don't know that yet, but I agree, an almost 400% price hike is ridiculous. I don't think many people would venture for such an expense, especially after tens of terahashes were added to the network and tens more will be added by the time they get their units.

Another option is to have an auction, top 300 bid get the units.
There might also be a limit for how many 1 person could buy.
But it's not my business, and the way he runs his own business has produced the first product to market.

I spent 20 years being angry.

I hope not over one thing... That's a long time to hold a grudge.

Yes, something very unfair and difficult.  I was wronged.  The lesson, though, is that my own anger also poisoned me.

I'm angry all the time. A lot of people in their 30's and 40's believe it or not still live at home with mommy still washing their underwear and making them dinner. Those are the ones you see on here mouthing off, caps lock on, have no idea what they are talking about, can't spell a word even using a spell check. Those are the guys that have nothing to worry about. No bills to pay, no real stress in life. The biggest thing they have to worry about it is when is mom going to feed them. They're too scared or too cheap to even get their own place and have their own life. These type of people have no reason at all to be angry with anyone.

I moved out of mommy's nest at the age of 18. And since I'm not financially rich I've seen just about every bad end of the stick you can think of. Everything is an uphill battle. There is always someone saying no, you can't do that, you will have to wait, it can't be done, denied, whatever. When you actually live life a little the anger can set in and start to be a poison. I've been angry for a while now and probably was much more angry years ago but have gotten much better. I basically just don't think about it and move my thoughts forward. And to think people on here can make me angry or disturb me with posts and verbal words is just funny. It will take a lot more then a message forum to even start me to begin thinking about getting angry even the slightest bit. When I speak with someone for a little bit or read what they have to say a few times it is quite easy for me to tell if they have even begun to live life a little. Anyone that has this experience under their belt knows what I'm talking about. If you are scratching your head, wondering what I'm saying or thinking of a smart ass comment or dig then you just haven't experienced "life" enough yet to get it.

Not sure why I even wrote this, but I'm glad to hear you released that poison. How did you do it? Self medicate? Therapy? All on your own? Hey, just curious.

I'll answer.

I did it through first, reading history books and other assorted old books of non-fiction type and serious fiction.   Then writing my feelings as an opinion on a blog I started was my next step.  It not only informed me but also gave me the feeling that at least I put my .02 somewhere for others to read.  Do that for like the next 3-5 years and see how you feel and get back to me.  It really helps, outside of that, be grateful for what you have because it could be a lot worse and smile.

Dalkore

This has the right feel to it also.
1399  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I am a certified Anti-Money Laundering agent. (AMLCA) on: March 19, 2013, 04:19:56 PM
I think the new regulation will help adoption of bitcoin, and hence all users of bitcoin. By increasing regulation, it becomes more visible and more demand for bitcoin will result in higher bitcoin prices.

Well said.

It was inevitable that if Bitcoin were to become a serious player, it would have to play nicely (at least for a time) with some of the big money feeding mechanisms. This is a good thing in my opinion. Bitcoin is the real deal. It will always be decentralized, but a ton of legitimate folks want to get in on it and they don't want to feel that they have to buy them from some guy on the corner. Legal channels into Bitcoin can only strenthen it.

I agree.  Aurum and Bitfloor have my identity papers.  I am on the way to the bank to test a wire transfer.
I previously verified that an ACH will return money to my bank.

PSU cold air intake is a little bit insufficient, I'm planning to add a fan out side of PSU exhaust to help cool the PSU. Currently at -1c degree there is no problem, but when summer arrives, ambient temperature could reach 25+, it will become an issue

Summer ambient for me can reach 43°C.
