It's sort of like you are giving odds then.

If he pays back to day you lose the little amount that it is booked, but as it drags on and loss is more likely you'll have a lot more action.

It can also be one of the most profitable endeavors at such scale in modern times. I can't say I've ever seen returns that high. I guess they were even better in discovery times when new trade routes were opened, or when a new and rich mine is discovered until it's swarmed down to normal profitability.
