I believe that everyone is being ridiculous and that Pirate is probably not a ponzi for several very good reasons. When the bet is over, I'll give my reasons, but it won't have any bearing and is still based on something that I cannot prove.

I still believe there is a very high chance that Pirate is just doing a business which we don't understand, and my sinking gut, although questioning his lack of professionalism, lateness, etc, reminds me that no one is perfect and it may all just be a series of bad coincidences. I hope I am right and that I am able to prove to the community once and for all that what we don't understand is not always a scam. If I happen to be wrong, I'm happy to have enjoyed this entertaining time with everyone, and I've actually made quite a lot of new friends (as you can imagine).

My grandmother told me when I was just 12 two things that I have discovered the be the truest truths.

2. You can fuck up a perfectly good thing or make a bad thing worse by getting the government involved.

Really this bitcoin experiment is showing us that we need some sort of system where by we pay 20% to the government for services like policing etc and a small percentage to the banks for handling transactions so we dont get scammed.

This is a fairly solid post with some convincing research.  You've managed to sway my possition more than is typical.  It would be interesting to see if Matthew has any responses to these statements at this point and if so, what they would be.  If his goal really was to 'educate' the community, this would be a good chance to do so...and probably a better use of time than slitting his wrists.

I'm one of those who were hedging, so this is refusal to pay and lack of understanding about contract law is discouraging. Not to mention the fact that the integrity of a valuable bitcoin community member has been compromised.

No it doesn't.  It just shows you need personal responsibility.
I believed I would win the bet and I also believed there was a good chance  Matt had no intent in paying so I skipped the bet.
Why bet on something you will win and probably not get paid?

If Matt really wanted to make a huge bet he would have made an escrowed bet (like bets of bitcoin) and dropped 10K BTC down.   If he setup the bet to close in a week and payout in three he likely would have saw 30K to 50K wagered against his 10K.

I didn't know that.  I took a long time member, early adopter, forum staff member, bitcoin businessman, at his word.  For all I know he could be sitting on 200k in coins and just really believed in Pirate.  I didn't know it'd come to this.

If he had 200k coins and truly believed in pirate, he would have just bought pirate debt at 5% of face value.  His bet lost all credibility with me when he was accepting BTC1k+ bets at 1:1 odds when the market rate was far below that.

I in no way condone what Matthew did, but I do not feel too bad for people who booked huge bets after the bet was "closed" and there was little chance pirate would pay back.
