In what scenario would you not have to let someone control your money though? Untill you have the coins in a wallet of your own or have them stored some other way you would've have to went through a bank account and a processor like Bitstamp or mtGox, it's pretty unavoidable. And aside from taking pretty large fees it's not like you're going to get screwed over by the larger processors, well, aside from what happened with MtGox.

It's no problem to store my coins in my own wallet. With bitcoin you don't need a bank and you don't need a bank account. Changing fiat into bitcoin is working with multsig (escrow) - no need to let one party control the BTCs before a deal is settled.

To have mined around 20 BTC and having lost them because I did not know what I was doing back in late 2011.

That was the worst mistake. But then I started studying!  Wink

Look like many here got many BTC's in the past when the price is not that quite interesting for years so they stop and just forget about it. Well I think I will do the same if I have that lots of btc's in the past because we don't know what will happen.

Let's just put that in the grave and start another journey with bitcoin. Wink

The only mistake i remember is that i haven't bought some bitcoin when the price was around 1$ per coin. If i have done that i may have become a rich teenager because i usually have around 200$ in my online pocket everytime so 200x1000$= 2,00,000$ that is around 2 corore Nepali ruppess i can buy house, car and also do fixed deposit to get lifetime interest.

The worst mistake I have ever made with bitcoin is not holding onto the hundreds that I had at one time. I ceased my usage of bitcoin for a couple years and really missed out on a good chunk of cash.
I have learned my lesson and I'm building my stash back up slowly, but I'll never forgive myself for missing out on a small fortune.

Haha. There is a portion of people that hold tight on Bitcoin during Bitcoin first few years. No worries, you are not alone. Build up your collection of coins slowly, we are still consider early adopters.

Many years ago, i read an article about bitcoin and tried to mine some with my old pc... This was near the beginning of the bitcoin revolution...

I cannot even remember if i found any blocks, but i'm sure i don't have the wallet anymore (the pc i used to mine is long gone... probably stripped apart for precious metals).
If i would have continued to mine, and helt my coins untill they reached $1000+/BTC, i would have been rich...

Well, it's not really a mistake, just a case of not being able to look into the future  Grin

Like the person above you. If you did successfully mine a block, you would now have 50 BTC which is equivalent to 18 580 USD at currenct rate. If you sell them during Bitcoin peak ... you would now have 50 000 USD. Shocking number. Like what I said above, no worries. We are still consider early adopters.

didn't withdraw it to paypal. is mistake i ever made, end up lose it all on gambling with in 1 night.
so next time people.. when have some bitcoin just keep it or exchange it to paypal to prevent urself gamble it away. worst mistake. Undecided

Gambling have only two outcome. One, lose. Two, win. Sadly most of us are on the lose side. The winning side is always the operator. You can gamble with Bitcoin, but just be sure not to gamble more than you can afford. Better yet, dont visit the gambling forums and you will not gamble anymore.

I've made a multitude of mis-investments over the years, which is a shame but I still got out of BTC with a nice profit overall. I cashed out a decent amount of my bitcoin right before a major price increase, could've had 7k$. I also pulled out my shares in that one big mining company ages ago, which I forgot the name of. The shares did something ridiclous like triple in price and I could've had a lot of money from that.

What a shame. Everyone make mistake. I also make some mistake when I was trading Altcoin for Bitcoin profit. I bought altcoin (which I forgot the name) for a thousands of Satoshi only. The second day the price had an increase of about 200% and I sold all of them. The third day ... it increases by 1000%! And ... yes, after a while it dropped back to normal range. If only I sell them on the third day ...

To have mined around 20 BTC and having lost them because I did not know what I was doing back in late 2011.

That was the worst mistake. But then I started studying!  Wink

Like the two others quoted. No worries. We are still consider early adopters. 20 BTC is somewhat big now but we are still able to collect those. Smiley.

So sad! This profile does not appear as the #1 result (on anonymous) Google searches anymore.

Time to be active on the crypto forums again? Proud to be one of the few Legendary members of the Sparkie Red Dot!

Gonna put this on my resume if I ever join a cryptocurrency/blockchain industry!

I bought some altcoins and waited to sell them at high price. Prices went down instead, and i am still holding those altcoins.

Worst mistake I've made was trying to trade the market - for someone like me it is always better to just hodl. Thankfully my loss it wasn't too much but enough to make me miss it. Hehe.

Definitely you can't consider it as a worst since you afford only what you lose.

That scenario always happen for the first time traders even an average trader. It happens to me when I make my first trade. Smiley

I should have learnt to use Bitcoin before actually using them. There was a lot to know before having tried the first steps.
But I'm quite happy today, now I feel I know what I need. I keep my BTC safe, I used them when I need and I trade them every once in a while.

Yes. Experience maybe teaches you something but it is very hard (for me) to read the charts and there are many talking heads (manipulators). I wish I knew.

Well reading literally the chart is really hard. I didn't know some technical terms about it today even I do trade for a months now but at least, as I look into it everyday, I have an idea of what is going on about. You have a trading group there in your place? Example in Facebook or any social media. It really a big help if someone or some group will assist you. With your current rank here in this forum I think somehow it's not hard to understand some trading terms since you are into it in the past. Right now, I always look at the chart regularly. Im looking to it hourly Smiley to make my next move. Every hour is important. Speculations and reading bitcoin news too really help.

Back in 2009, i messed with bitcoin a little.... Didn't keep up with it, lost 400+ coins somewhere on a old computer.

Do you still have that computer with you? Or at least the hard drive? It might be possible to recover all those coins, without much effort. One of my friends did the same. He mined a block of bitcoin (25 BTC) sometime in 2011, and then forgot about it. But after two years, he was able to recover those coins from the hard drive.

My friend was telling me a similar story yesterday - he sent bitcoins to a site that promised amazing returns. If it's too good to be true, it's probably just a scam.
