I find it funny that that people are considering Wembanyama as a bust just because of his first game performance. Sure, he had 9 points and a lot of FGs missed but he is in a league where experience matters to majority of the players. One game does not define on what a player truly is. With his height and ball handling skills, he can definitely be a threat in the future with proper training and guidance from his couch.

Again, one game does not define the future of a player. While his shot selection was not good, he will definitely learn from this experience and prove to himself that he can handle the league better than anyone else at his age.

If Wemby will have the same mentality as Timmy and David, he will be accompanied by natural talents,
imagine how Spurs build that winning team, right after the twin towers, together with all those role stars who bring them titles
and with Timmy and their own versions of big 3, Parker, Ginobli and Him.
Coach Pop is the right person for Wemby, I believe that the blueprint will continue as long as the players are willing to
bring all the best that they've got.

They already signed Pop Greg in a multi-year contract looks like they gonna work well to improve Wemby with him and get back those championships in the near future. It's alright when he didn't get big numbers in his first summer league game they are just protecting him to not get some creepy injury that will gonna cost them much if ever that happened. because skills in the NBA cannot be adopted fast by just putting the player on the court no matter how good he is and since he was the main topic of the Summer league I'm sure every player was expected to play hard against him to steal the spotlight.

I was pretty surprised to hear the news that coach Pop signed on for another four years. I had thought he already stated publicly that he was going to retire once his contract was up. I guess he changed his mind. I don’t think he’s going to be able to build Wemby into anything special. Wemby just needs to spend a few years in the weight room.

Pop is just a talnted coach that only a few can hardly imitate. He has this good chemistry and team building where he utilizes every player on the paint and he knows how to maximize each potential of his players. With the money also on the line, a 5-year contract plus millions at his disposal is definitely a win for him and the team.

Wemby definitely not going to be a burst. I didn’t expect him to catch the NBA by the storm. He needs to grow, buck up a little bit more, improve on his ball handling, and then we can have a Centre with KD abilities. He got 9 points on his debut but the team lost, tonight, he got 27pts and 12Rbs, all of this didn’t help Spurs to get the W.
That shows eveything you need to know about his game as an NBA fan.

I understand that Wemby being considered one of the best drafts since Lebron did caused people to have some skewed opinion of him because everyone is expecting A LOT from him, the dude you are comparing Wemby with has multiple MVPs, all time scoring leader, has 4 titles, 20 seasons under his belt, been fmvp and 20 all-stars with basically 3 or even maybe 4 different hall of fame careers in a single career, that alone is enough to prove that Lebron is singular in his career and Wemby will not be like that at all, it's dishonest to expect him to be that good, that's just not possible at all.

I feel like if they came out and said he could be maybe as good as Luka? Then that would be fine, not really too far off on talent level difference there.

The entire hype should have been centered around the position he plays best, which is the centre lol. Lebron got into the league straight up from high-school and they keys to the doors of the league was handed to him at 18YO.
I agree w you. He should have been compared to Antony Davis, maybe? Maybe Not. We will see😁

It's just one game, and it has already shown how overrated he is. His poor shooting is very evident, and what will happen when the regular season starts? I think Wemby's season is not going to be easy. So for those who are thinking of betting on him to win the ROY (Rookie of the Year), I guess you have to think twice because thus far, he has not impressed us yet.

Yeah it's just one game, a summer league game, he has a lot of pressure being the greatest prospect next to LeBron and yeah he had a poor shooting night. However, if you look at his game, he actually made an impact both offensively and defensively. He just still needs to adapt to the game of NBA. I won't say he's overrated, because he had shown us his ability is one of a kind for 7 foot guy. I can't wait for the regular season and see if he really lives up to the hype, If he can win the ROTY. But I know he will eventually become better and better. He already have the skill and he only needs to develop, hopefully without a major injury he'll be a future hall of famer.
Agreed, he is not overrated. It's only that the public has extremely high expectations and has been hyped. To be honest, I don't think Wemby will ever be as excellent as Lebron, especially in his early years. However, too much pressure may be beneficial to him because he will be hungry to develop and always offer his best effort, only if he can handle the pressure. Allow him some time. Just look at Giannis and how much better he is today in comparison to his early years.

You can't blame the people. He was the number 1 pick, so it's only natural that people expect him to be the best rookie next season and be highly competitive against the older, star players. The highlights I've seen of him on social media are really impressive, but when I watched his first NBA game, I was disappointed.

We're not blaming him; we're just disappointed because our expectations were not met.

Ok! there you go! does the 2nd summer league game impresses or met your expectations? We have to understand that, not every game a star player could show up and become dominant each and every game, especially for a rookie. We have to understand that, there are these off nights. As long as he will become consistent, I mean if he could he play better 9 out of 10 games, without a doubt he'd dominate this league in the next 3-5 years. I honestly don't think he could win the ROTY, I have Scoot as my candidate to win the ROTY at this very moment. Wemby still has a lot of areas and room to improve, but the kid already got skills, only thing coach Pop needs to do is to hone it and get enough NBA experience and adapt to the game. This is definitely the reason why the Spurs have signed him for another 5 year contract extension, they know coach Pop could make the Spurs become relevant again in the playoffs discussions, within that time span given.

The media always blow up the best players in the draft. Always been that way and always will be. Once in awhile they get 1 right, like Magic or Shaq. Wemby as is IMO will need 2-3 years in the weight room before he will be much of anything. He's a stick currently that will be pushed around in the paint. Give him a few years to bulk up and watch out. Maybe as good as Giannis.

Slight correction, it was a 5-year contract worth $80 Million.

Anyway, that was the whole plan at first but when they had won the lottery pick, everything has changed and even coach Pop already knew that the front office will ask him to extend his contract as they badly need him to coach the new kid in town that is touted to be the next superstar among all players in his generation, and that indeed happened.

If they didn't get the first pick and also draft Wembanyama maybe there's no assignment left for coach Pop and he decide to resign. But since things got more interesting on their team  as they get a generational talent in team he decide sign for another contract and develop this kid. Good thing he do that because we know coach Pop can develop him into a monster and we see how good he is on his game 2 performance.

Well there's only 2 scenario, either coach Pop will retired as coach of the Spurs but maybe have jobs in the front office, or just re-sign but maybe not 5 years extension.

But since they got Wemby, and maybe coach Pop wanted to develop the young kid so he re-signed and had his coaching tenure for a huge 5 year deal for him. So we are all excited as we all know that coach Pop has proven already in the past, with the likes of David Robinson and Tim Duncan, two big guy so he might have the secret formula applied to Wemby too.

The Spurs don't have anyone out there to rely on if Pops didn't re-sign the contract and hopefully, it will lead to being the best for both of them and also the rosters that are involved to make Spurs a great contender again just like before. He knows how to hone the young man to become one of the greatest NBA players that has been a pick in the number 1 1st round pick in other words just like Lebron James and also let's just hope that he won't suffer any worse injury just like what we have seen from the star players that made their career go downhills.

I honestly don’t think that he will be able to live up to their expectations. If he is in really good form then probably he can perform well. But this is a mistake that they do with a lot of players. They just overhyped him and when he is not performing as expected people tend to absolutely forget about him.

It is too early to tell. The kid is young and shows a lot of potential. If he can work with Pop on what he lacks and needs to improve, then he can be something. If Tim can be great with just fundamentals, Wemby can also be. It will be a lot of work but that is just commitment. He already has the best coach on his side. If he can commit to the work needed to improve, then he will not be just an overhyped prospect but a real NBA superstar.

Wemby is probably the most hyped before entering the NBA ever since I follow the league. Lebron was also hyped but the internet and the media and social media are not that big during that time. Of course, Wemby is not that hyped if he is not really that good, and since he is still so young his potential is also very high.

With regard to Wemby's bad performance in his first game, I don't think it deserves a lot of criticism. He was probably pressured and nervous because that was his first time and everyone was expecting him to dominate the game. But he did play well in his next game. Wemby had 27 minutes of playing time and produced 9 of 14 for a total of 27 points with 12 rebounds. That was a great performance already. There's still a lot of work to do though but he is still 19 so he needs to relax and not feel the pressure.

Do you actually know this or just generally guessing from how things turned out? Did Popovich actually say anything or some insider made the news? It is just interesting. I know Greg Popovich lost his wife due to illness recently. And he is actually too old. He might have just wanted to continue coaching after the loss of his wife, to clear his mind and hold on to something. I don't think he can actually think that there is a talent in the team that make him stay. No disrespect to Spurs. There can be some amazing team over there but I don't he would stay just for the talent. Nevertheless, this is great news for Wembanyama. Although he is too old, he is still Gregg Popovich. One of the all time greatest coaches. Might be even the best in the last 30 years. But maybe Wemby is even too hopeless for him to develop, especially with that fragile body.

He’s certainly the most hyped player since Lebron James. I Remember when Lebrons high school basketball games were being broadcasted by ESPN, I had never seen a player that hyped before or sense, or at least until Wemby came around.

The NBA takes time get the hang of and Wemby will be just fine in my opinion, he’s just going to have some growing pains.

So true. I don't really want to criticize this kid yet. He has the height, he has the skills too, and what he only lacks is the experience and being calm during times when pressure will be turned on.
He should get used to it especially if they will try to make it to the playoffs. That environment will not be so good to him, especially with the hardcore defense that will happen at those times and then the adjustments.

Regarding the hype, well Lebron didn't get his championship too in the first 8 years of his career. He even needs to fly to Miami Heat just to partner with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh to claim that first ring of him.
The future is not written yet, there will be lots of improvements that will happen, and how I wish I could see the San Antonio Spurs being back on the map again as a playoff and championship contender. I bet Coach Pops will smile one more time once that happens.  Wink

We're not discussing whether Wemby will win a championship, as that's too high of an expectation. We're talking about whether Wemby will be able to perform as expected, like a genuine NBA star. I have doubts that he will even win the Rookie of the Year award. No disrespect intended, but I see some weaknesses in him that opposing teams could exploit, limiting his impact. It's important to remember that the summer league is very different from the regular season.

I think no one is calling him bust or something, it's that perhaps with the big hype around his name even before making the NBA for sure fans are expecting him to have a good debut game, with some highlights in his first game.

But none of that happen, instead, he was welcome by Kai Jones with a huge posterized dunk.

And after the game, he was interviewed and says that he will try to be better the next game and improved. So we will see what kind of improvement he is talking to. Maybe he will shows his offensive repertoire next.

That was planned and I reckon that it wasn't Kai Jones alone who planned to do that because I bet that there are lot of other rookies that wanted the limelight as well and they see Victor Wembanyama as a choice to have that limelight even just for a bit by posterizing on him. And all that happened in just one game and it is clear that he was having some struggles at that time because aside from the pressure, there is this factor that he is still adjusting to the league because NBA offers a different level compared to what he used to go against before he was drafted.

Well, when you have a talent like Wemby, it looks like you want to stay around for a few more years and yes Pop is getting quite old these days and would have been normal if he retired at that age, but he doesn't really look his age neither, that's his benefit, I do not know how he feels maybe he feels he is getting older but he doesn't really show it, he still looks like how he looked 5 years ago, so I find it great that he decided to keep it going. All in all I feel like it is going to be fine for their future.

Wemby still there, Pop still there, and they have some room to get more players and picks if they want to, when you combine these together, that makes it easier to build a future star team and in 4 years they could be much much better.

Honestly, Pop has gotten really old. Despite that, I think he's still a great legend, a big name for San Antonio. He's a coach that I'll be really sad about if he retires.
They have a 5 year deal for now and it will make a lot of money. But he can terminate the contract at any time, that is, he can retire at any time. It would be a pretty amazing career if he managed an 80-year-old team Smiley

And I may add, he may not still be used to NBA type of game. I read in some posts in social media that Wemby said that seems to be lost and do not know what he is doing. Not sure if that is true, but the way I see it, he is used to playing a European style of basketball. We can see a glimpse of it in some of the assists he made. We know that European plays a very different system in basketball than in NBA. That could be a factor in his underperformance in his first game. He seems to be better in his second game. He recorded 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks. That is 9-14 from the field with 2-4 from the long range. That is a great improvement from his previous game.

Wink

So true, I guess everyone was just expecting too much from the young guy since he was hyped for over a year. That is why there some who are disappointed when he underperformed in his debut game. But that is just his first game. He still has a lot to learn and good thing he is with the right coach that could give him what he needs to survive and succeed in NBA.

Well as long as he is healthy and has a clear mind, he will be able to do it. He has assistant coaches that will do the grunt work for him. He is there to give guidance to this young team and to groom wemby like he groom his other big men, Duncan and Robinson.

This season's draft is a blast. There were picks that are also good but people aren't noticing that because they're only focused on Wemby. That's okay because he's really noticeable but once the actual and regular season starts, this is gonna show on who's the best prospect that's been taken by a team. While we're also hoping for the best for this kid, he's still really that far from the typical player that we've been watching in the NBA so, I'd say that just give him time as he's still starting out and he's adjusting to the new setup and environment.

I would agree, we really need to see how this kid will be in this year NBA season. As far as ROY, he will have to fight it out with this years draft class, but the number 2 pick from last year, Chet Holmgren. So it's going to be a tough competition ahead of him.

Of course, we have seen his weaknesses already, his body is not for banging in the whole 82 games. He will have to gain more muscles in his frame so that he will not be pushed by anyone, even smaller guys.

He bounce back though with 27 points with 12 rebounds in his 2nd game.
