So, with all the due respect, coralreefer, your concerns above cannot be serious.
I just haven't been able to come up with any other reason why ElasticPL needs built in crypto functions...what other use would they serve? I would prefer if they weren't there at all. We can throw them out if you like (or if you think that it might help to get rid of a possible negative image) I just thought it might be a nice thing to have without any specific use case in mind. EDIT: Let's just throw them away!

I personally would not feel right if my miner was used to crack something as well as I think it would tarnish the image of Elastic if that is how the system gets used.

I have never thought that far, but I totally agree with your point of view. I also do not want to be part of anything that is related to cracking anything. I really appreciate your honesty, your work and of course your opinion as well. To me, you are an integral asset for Elastic so I honestly believe that your opinion is not less important than mine! It's unbelievable how much you have done for the project so far, so you have every right to participate in all design decisions. I would say, let's just drop the crypto stuff, and leave the implementation to possible future developers if time shows that these functions are really needed for what reason ever.

I also actually think coralreefer is more important to this project, than crypto functions So if we have to choose - I vote for throwing out crypto functions, and keeping coralreefer instead

EDIT: Let's just throw them away! EK, Coralreef, you folks are men of integrity and I truly respect your views. But, discovering an unknown to this date function is an amazing discovery. Despite the fact that it could be abused, it is no different than discovering Atom and its potential to make an atomic bomb or million other medical and scientific uses. I'm really no body here, but my voice " please don't throw away any of your precious discoveries"

I have no issue with tossing it, especially as its no eternal decision and like EK said future developers could add it if there is some really urgent need to have it.
What i really like would be folding@home as it has a really nice background and is well known in science.

I think that we should enable the greatest usability and flexibility to the Elastic system. It is true that some functions could be exploited to certain negative operations, but it can also be used for good purposes I am sure. In any case, the most important is to enable the system to be used by as widest audience as possible. Wide scientific usage will be great, but also having the system accessible enough for the average user so it can be used by them as well for whatever uses they may need. On a different note, Happy birthday Elastic!! This project is surely one of the most interesting and promising projects in recent years. Let us make it as big as it can be so everyone everywhere will know about it and use it! A huge thanks for everyone who made this project progress and come so far!!

For what kind of scientific computation can it be used at the beginning?
I´m not a coder at all, so I don´t really unterstand all the background but since I´m working in the research sector this is really interesting for me. Would it be possible to write a program which is working like the one from folding@home ? So to test specific combinations of protein conformations?
Actually a working F@H client would be a good marketing idea if it is possible to implement. Unlike block hashes in crypto, folding jobs have quite long deadline times. So if such a thing would be available at launch or somewhere on the roadmap, it could attract some attention from F@H users and the scientific community. Not just the crypto investors echo chamber. I totally agree. there is also rosetta@home with an different idea of solving the problem. It´s not just the folding which is important. It´s also important to calculate and in this way create different structures for some kind of antiviral treatment oder vaccines. If we could enable something like this. I think this would be a very goof start to demonstrate the power of the statement

Happy Birthday XEL! I've been with ya ever since the initial crowd funding and happy to be involved with this project.
As we start a new calendar year and have huge hopes and aspirations for the successful release of a mainnet, I did want to drop a personal note to the group:
Release the product when you are happy with a solid starting point. Avoid scope creep. Bells and whistles dont make the project a success at the start, the community will have to help here. The most important thing to remember for crypto-projects is that these projects become evolving systems and will continually require development and upkeep. More devs will help assist and share some of the heavy lifting once the project gets publicity and hits some exchanges.
To the devs specifically: You have been helpful, transparent, intelligent, and entertaining this past year - I am happy to have backed a project you work on. Keep it up!
Great minds in this thread. Always love coming back and catching up.
