Whats the difference between a fork and a clone?

A fork happens when substantial changes are made to the source code that make the new version incompatible with the old one. A clone is when somebody takes the source code and makes little or no modifications and starts a new coin with it.

Actually, NVC isn't a PPC fork or clone for a long time. We working with bitcoin codebase directly, it's a PPC-like bitcoin fork.

I like the fact that Novacoin is updated often, unlike most other altcoins. How many people are currently working on Novacoin?

0.4.2 update is ready and will be published in next 24h.

It includes a few changes in addition to new PoS ROI calculation algorithm, which was implemented in 0.4.1:

  • Fix for lk_max_locks exhaustion problem, more info is available here. It will become active since 20 Aug 2013;
  • 27 bits PoS target limit will become active since 20 Jul 2013.
Repository updated, builds published.

Builds: https://sourceforge.net/projects/novacoin/files
Source: https://github.com/CryptoManiac/novacoin

Protocol update conditions:

0.4.1 and 0.4.2 will be compatible with 0.3.5/0.4.0 until 20 June 2013.
0.4.2 will be compatible with 0.4.1 until 20 July 2013.

An optimal way is update to 0.4.2 before 20 June 2013.

https://github.com/CryptoManiac/stratum-mining

Forked from TheSeven's repository and added nvc-specific changes. It should work, but wasn't tested yet.

P.S. usage of v0.4.2 daemon is highly recommended. Also you can't use non-local pubkeys for coinbase transaction output.

There are not so many pools, 4 or 5. Khore and p2pool are the biggest ones.

P.S. StratumServer will be updated today, because we found a serious bug. Don't use it in production until that will be fixed.

It works for own p2pool nodes, but there is no support for cooperative mining nodes yet. The fix is quite simple, but actually, we prefer the network of many "small" p2pool nodes instead of the big one.

Anyway, it seems that we have no choice, because some users already need it. Smiley So, new p2pool version will be published as soon as work under StratumServer will be completed.

Changes list announce:

  • Shares difficulty selection, by using difficulty ratio as password;
  • New blocks version schema support;
  • Cooperative mining nodes support.

How is NovaCoin PoS different from PPCoin?
(sorry, but I generally find so little info on both PoS)
Actually, there are not so many differences. The main differences are dynamic ROI calculation and another entropy bit source.

Man novacoin gets a bad rep over at the btc-e trollbox. If I would have blindly listened to them without reading through the thread I would think

1. Novacoin is owned by the russian mafia
2. Novacoin is kept afloat by the russian mafia as they use it for money laundering.
3. Novacoin will give me aids and kill all my family..

Just kiddingon the last one. I like how you continually develop the client and stick around to answer questions. Moving my miners to Novacoin. Thanks for making a good coin!

Received PM now.  Cheesy

It's funny that 18% of downloaders are from USA. So, according to trollbox statements, we can say that 18% of russian mafia's money is located in the USA. Roll Eyes

I've been mining russianmafiacoin steadily for a few weeks now and will continue to do so.  If you really pay attention to coinchoose.com it is actually the most stable and consistently profitable coin with a reasonable difficulty (not like litecoin or bitcoin).  I was chasing around the newest/most profitable coins for a while but I think it is a waste of time and hashes.

I'm waiting on the update to p2pool so I can give that a shot.
