...What I DO know is that the attack vector EXISTS, like you seem to acknowledge. Therefore, someone COULD be using it and we wouldn't know based on its very nature...
And yet you only sling accusations towards a single company and not any one of 100 different pools that could have utilized the same tech that is in the "sizable purchase" you want to make. How do we know your "outrage" isn't just a cover for your intention of using "covert" asicboost?  Roll Eyes

If you have to ask "why?", you wouldn`t understand my answer.

Avalon 7's actually do have a shorter ROI time than ****main's s9's. They are not as effective as S9's when it comes to power efficiency but that's a small price for not supporting a p.o.s company.

#UASF

I'm not sure exactly how this example was calculated, but based on my numbers:
Antminer S9 = $81.41 $/TH & 0.098 J/GH

compared to

Avalon 741 = 97.81 $/TH & 0.158 J/GH

Antminer will always pay off sooner, lower capital cost, better power efficiency

Do you add the miner's initial purchase cost into your calculations? If not, add those and then it will make sense a lot.  Cool

I didn't say Avalon 7 is a better miner than s9, it sure isn't. But it is cheaper and according to nicehash it's ROI is faster.

Or in the real world (with BTC @ $2,350, mining only BTC, and ignoring avg. 4% bi-weekly diff increase):

There's plenty to read in this thread regarding the reliability of S9s.  Today I was looking at a S9 on Amazon and I saw they offer for purchase a "Service Warranty" with S9s.  The cost of the warranty is $50 for 2 years and $150 for 3 years.  The miners themselves are about twice as much as buying from Bitmain, but with considering the miner would arrive in a few days, there's no cost of shipping, and no worries about customs I think the warranties are valued around $450 for 2 years or $550 for 3 years.  My question is does anyone think this is worth it?  Also has anyone ever dealt with the company Assurant before?  Are they just as bad as Bitmain?

S9 on Amazon: $2150 with shipping

S9 from Bitmain: $1100
Shipping from Bitmain: $50
2 month wait from Bitmain: $600 (opportunity cost)
Potential Customs: Huh

I hate to be the one to burst ur bubble but the protection plan mentioned is for desktop computers and NOT for bitcoin miners. u will basically spend your money on a service plan that wont ever be allowed to be used with "Assurant".

It's so cute when I see people crying that equipment has no return and it's more due to the fact that they are married to a specific coin rather than fully utilizing the equipment.  Cheesy

not this again....come on bud....its been quiet for weeks and i even saw a couple helpful comments from u towards other members. dont back away from that now lol. let others do what they wanna do....theres no harm in letting them mine the way they feel comfy mining.

S9s are designed to mine SHA-256 coins .
If you pick one of the least profitable coins to mine (forsaking more profitable coins), then it is not the S9 that is unprofitable (it's your choices that are unprofitable).

i agree but the way u went about it was a little more rude than it needed to be lol. uk there is a nicer way to say things and still make ur opinions known. no one ever responds well to being called an idiot or bein made to feel like they are ignorant. not that u called him an idiot of course...just an example.

@gbBit
when you do the expanded numbers, for every 2 you buy from amazon, you could by 3 direct, throw 1 in the trash bin and still come out ahead vs paying someone else's profit margin on Amazon.  Wink

This will be my last post on this off-topic for the sake of halting spam in this thread..

Assuming there are indeed some pools using covert-AB, i.e. Bitmain has a VIP list, this means unfair mining advantage = centralization of mining / no more competition = protocol upgrades must be allowed by the mining 'kings' = Bitcoin is a failed experiment. I don't want Bitcoin to fail, nor should you (however maybe you don't care considering you pump alt/shitcoin mining..). If this is going on and Bitmain owns it (patent), I would be OK with it if, as a customer of Bitmain, that I and everyone else who buys their product is given access. Bitmain would still gain from the patent (for 20 years) by limiting competing manufacturers, but they at least wouldn't be fucking over their non-VIP customers and destroying PoW consensus mechanism which is the very basis of Bitcoins value...

Bitmain has the S9 for sale again.  Just picked up 2 + 2PSU for under $2,500 shipped to US.

Was there ever any conclusion on the error message:

Hardware Version   Socket connect failed: Connection refused

I'm just going to have to break down and send this miner in.  If it's a software thing, I would like to try and work that out before.

I've tried reseting the miner, both through online and pushing the button, and the miner doesn't seem to reset.  Is there a way to ssh into the  miner and reset through there?

Thanks in advance.

You'd have to look at the log; "Socket connect failed: Connection refused" is the default message until the miner is hashing.

Last line of the log is:

Start bmminer ...

The miner's fan speed is just going up and down.

BMminer is Bitmain's S9 version of cgminer and it doesn't show the version on the "Overview" page, because the "Overview" page only shows defaults until the miner is hashing.

P.S. - there are multiple pages to a log (not just the last line).

If you have to ask "why?", you wouldn`t understand my answer.

Yes you can SSH into the miner, use root as the username and your password that you set from the GUI web interface, or the default password if you didn't set one.

You'd probably have to be very good at some programming to make any headway though, there isn't much user friendly stuff in there. Even the bmminer program is an unauthorised license violating copy of cgminer. So you're not likely to get any help from Bitmain or cgminer on trying to solve the problem.

Bitmain won't give you any software tools or advice on how to fix it yourself, their only response is "send it in for repair". Although sometimes they link you to a different firmware version for a specific problem, might try contacting them first about the error and see if you get anything useful.

Your error is probably something wrong with either the controller or the hashing boards, the socket error means they can't connect to each other.

Could be a lot of things wrong, and it's going to take a lot of deep work to figure it out.

Good luck!

well there are a few of things:

1. you didnt wait long enough for the miner to run through the check. older revs of this miner take longer for the auto tuner to run through the checks for the miner. even pre auto tuned versions took up to 45 mins or so to actually start mining.

2. you only filled out 1 of the pool info sections or if your pool doesnt use a password you left the password section blank. with the firmware i had bitmain send me with fan control and speed control it wouldnt mine using my default config which was pool info in slot 1...nothing in slot 2....and pool info in slot 3. on all of the other versions this pool config worked but not on the ones they provided me. i only found out when i reset the config and it filled in all 3 with the antminer defaults and started hashing almost right away. once i filled out all 3 section under pool info including 123 as the password the miner fired right up and started hashing. this may also be true for new versions of the firmware.

3. if you set a static ip your router may be rejecting the manual settings or your dns may be incorrect.the best way to test this is to login to the config site and go over to the reset/upgrade section and reset the miner back to defaults. you then let the miner run using the default antminer config (yes i know it will mine for bitmain but this is only temp until it starts hashing) and that way you know your miner is functioning properly. after resetting do not change any of the configs and wait at least an hour if it doesnt start mining right away.

2. you only filled out 1 of the pool info sections or if your pool doesnt use a password you left the password section blank. with the firmware i had bitmain send me with fan control and speed control it wouldnt mine using my default config which was pool info in slot 1...nothing in slot 2....and pool info in slot 3. on all of the other versions this pool config worked but not on the ones they provided me. i only found out when i reset the config and it filled in all 3 with the antminer defaults and started hashing almost right away. once i filled out all 3 section under pool info including 123 as the password the miner fired right up and started hashing. this may also be true for new versions of the firmware.

3. if you set a static ip your router may be rejecting the manual settings or your dns may be incorrect.the best way to test this is to login to the config site and go over to the reset/upgrade section and reset the miner back to defaults. you then let the miner run using the default antminer config (yes i know it will mine for bitmain but this is only temp until it starts hashing) and that way you know your miner is functioning properly. after resetting do not change any of the configs and wait at least an hour if it doesnt start mining right away.

1.  I let the miner run for about 24 hours, nothing.

2.  The miner config is identical to my other working miners.

3.  Tried this also, nothing.

Is there a way to fire up the fans on the S9 for a period of time (let's say like 15 minutes) without any power running to the the hash boards (or even controller if possible)? I have an application where the S9s will be in an relatively external environment, and I want a safe way to start them up while ensuring there is no condensation when the unit is powered up. The condensation could occur after the units have been shut down and have cooled, and the ambient humidity has condensed. Assume I cannot have a back-up heater installed.

Any simple modifications anyone can think of? Maybe a small change to the firmware?
