Im not sure these cards will really cause hash rates to go up, most of hash probably belongs to those giant gpu farms and this card should produce about the same hash as the 390. So its basically just a replacement card to reduce your electric bill and keep about the same amount of hash in your farm. If you/them were going to expand further that likely would happen regardless of this card getting released. The watts to hash is basically just a bonus and this will be the card everyone wants to expand on as well replace there existing gpus with.
I think this card will be difficult to get at first with the high demand by gamers and miners alike but then again ati might have planned for that with massive shipments. There are shipping containers filled full with the 480 as we speak sailing its way to our sea ports =P
no way i could expand woithoute these cards the older gen amd cards are too hot for the midrange farmer say 2500gh with these i can double my hash rate for the same density due to less heat and less power so id not say those who were going to expand anyways. i was done expanding actually donsizing till i got wind of these parts and im sure alot of other folks are of the same mind which is why i think it might end up a wash in the long term

It is 3D mark, so it is not too relavant to the Ethereum mining. It is even 40% slower than 1070, not very encouraging. seems that the 480 is close to nano speed and caps out at 100 watts http://wccftech.com/amd-rx-480-faster-than-nano-980/I expect it to be the go to card for eth mining in the next few months i would avoid buying a card only for one algo, on the other algo 480 will be worse than a 1070, and not by few % etheruem will not last forever, what you will do in six months then when another new algo will kick in and destroy etheruem that went pos? at that point would be wise to have a strong card with better density to save on many rigs gimme a break with your voodo economics its about making money now no one is making money with a $500 1070 fuck the future youre not fooling anyone bro no idiots here. if the 480 is decentcand price holds around 230 best belive im swapping put all my power hungry cards for it a $500 card that can be sold 1 year later for 400 , will hold its value no problem, the initial investment is not really a concern for me, what it matter is the profit you make with that card i bought my 970 for 230-240 euro i can easily sell them for the same price now 2 months later or even more buying a gpu only for one algo is not so different than buying an asic, shitty strategy also buying now a 1070 is not different than buying nano before(actually it's better nano was priced $600), same crap, so i don't understand the issue about the price really two 480s will mine at a minimum of 23 mhs each and both cost at worst and cost less than half the price of a 1070 and they will hold their value just as well as a 1070. We were buying nano's because there was nothing out there as efficient at the time , in 14 days all that changes it would be stupid to buy a single 1070 now when you will be able to get nearly double the hash rate for the same price and possibly with rom mods the close to the same power drain. The 1070 purchase is kind of moot anyways , you cant find them for sale anywhere ,at least you can find nanos in any quantity to you want. the 480 will most likely be priced higher than excepted the same is happening for the 1070, so do not expect 200 at launch at all but probably 250 or more in some country even 300 the new target price is 229 for the 480 btw.. since one 480 is equal to 970 in hashrate in any other algo and a 1070 it's already 50%(without any optimization i believe it can be pushed to 80% easily) faster than a 1070 you have already a card that is worth $400 and again i don't care about etheruem, you guys should really stop basing your argument only about etheruem when even now there is another more profitable coin retail for a 1070 is still 449 still nearly twice the price of a single 480 and $229 is the price of the 8gb 480 which no alogos need more than 4g . optimzation or not id rather have the amd parts right now , whose to say with optimzation they wont hash bettter on ther algos than expected either. price per watt is king though because they are equal to a 970 in gaming or slightly worse, usually this mean that they will be there in hashing surely not on par with a 1070 in overall performance, that's why they cost only 200, if you except them to perform the same(as 1070) in any other algo minus etheruem you are wrong a 1070 will be 50% faster on other algo, not talking about etheruem, so it's worth 400 at launch, and 350 after the price return to the right point for the record the rx 480 has been benched faster than 390 and a non oced 970 one reviewer had it pushing a nano with a small oc! even withoute that i am really saying id rather have two 480s than a single 1070 for any algo let alone eth where a single 480 is as fast as a 1070

because they are equal to a 970 in gaming or slightly worse, usually this mean that they will be there in hashing
Hashing varies - sometimes NVidia can match AMD on "comparable" cards, sometimes it's not even in the same ballpark - depends on the algorythm and how it works. Scrypt, for example, "comparable" AMD cards blew NVidia completely out of the water - but X11 Nvidia was the ruler for a long time, even the last of the X11 improvements to the AMD side were only able to get them into the same ballpark per the benchs I've seen. Foldcoin, NVidia blows AMD away - the GTX 970 is competative with ANYTHING AMD on that despite being a much "lower end" card than the R9 390x or the Nano/Fury line. Gaming performance is NOT a good indicator of mining performance except PERHAPS within the SAME archetecture and generation of cards. With that said, I still suspect that the RX 480 will be a MUCH better $/hash performer than any Pascal card, and probably will compete well on W/hash as well - but we won't know for SURE 'till late June at best when/if someone with a review RX 480 benches it on mining algorythms.

Is R840 the most powerful Radeon GPU?
The answer is no. AMD R9 390 will be more power than RX 480 as 390 has wide memory bus. But the 480 is more efficient.

The R9 390 is a good mining card. If your electricity price is high, you may choose R9 nano. It is very efficient.

That is just a guess. The 390 has 512 bit memory bus, while the 480 has just 256. Ethereum mining is memory speed limited. So there is a possibility that 480 is slower, but it will consume less power.

So there is a possibility that 480 is slower, but it will consume less power. that is hogwash the 1070 has a 256 memory bus same as the 970 but more powerful individual cuda cores and it gets more hash per core. If your logic was sound the 1070 would hash the same as the 970 but it is at 27mhs stock. the 480 is three years newer tech than the hawaii cards even with the 256 memory buss it WILL mine at least at 27-28 mhs if not higher book it. p.s and if memory badnwith was the determining factor the fiji cards and the nano would 4012 memory bandwidth would hash at 80 mhs lol get real.

http://wccftech.com/radeon-rx-470-crossfire-3dmark-11-benchmarks/hmm at $140 a card the 470 is still 256 bit and has nealy the same mem bandwidth might actually be a better value

Ethereium is slated to go POS a while before *3* GB cards become unviable for mining - if the timeframe doesn't get pushed back again.
The real limit is likely to be "when will the diff increase to the point it overcomes the price and mining become uneconomic if your power cost is higher then VERY VERY cheap".

i can assume within this year, etheruem will not be profitable anymore, unless something crazy happen to bitcoin, which may skyrocket to unbelievable level like 2k or more...
