Anyone dual mining with 6 x 480 rig? How many watts from the wall? Hot cables?

Im running 5x 480s cables are not hot at all 50% fans on all the cards with a custom profile 71 degree temps
26mhs eth and 531 dcr  for all 5 cards im seeing 4 amps at 240v or so including the cpu and ram.

looks to be around 170 watts per card for dual mining

Hmm that's not bad at all. How are you feeding your risers?

Some bad news. We need to be very careful: PCI-E slot died with RX 480

https://community.amd.com/thread/202410

Mine will run for 6-8 hours then reboot.
Apparently 480 is piece of shit.
I'm thinking about buying 1070.

If you do not overclcok, 480 is still usable.

The RX480 killing mobos really isn't much of an issue for miners since we all use powered risers. The ribbon risers usually have a thick 16AWG cable connected to the molex, I am sure this cable can handle 100Watts no problem.

However no idea how those USB risers will work since they are powered by the SATA connector and those usually have a smaller gauge cable then regular molex.

One cable will handle 100W without problem. But do you have 6 molex cables connecting to the power supply?

That's true, there is only one +12V line on the molex connector. And most PSUs have 2 cables and each cable has 3 molex (6 molex per PSU). But if they actually use 100Watts then one PSU can only power 2 of them.

You would have to ghetto mod the PSU and plug the riser +12V into the CPU plug which should handle another 400Watts with the 4 +12V it has. Assuming your PSU has 2 CPU plugs.

A big headache, might as well wait for a 6+8 pin RX480 or 8pin RX480 from another manufacteur.

I know with mine I have enough spaces to hook 4 modular molex into the PS

What PSU is that? Do you have 4 molex connectors in parallel or in series? If its in series then it won't work since there is only 1 wire.

Well it blew my motherboard.  Returning them!!

What part did it blow up? How was it connected?

When I came home, no fans on the card, no video, no boot.
I had 3 cards hooked up with non powered risers.  Sending them back and I'll wait for an 8 pin version.
There are scorch marks on the main power to the motherboard.

Those look fine, the only burn marks are in the big connector going to the motherboard

Even if it was any other GPU, you should never use more than 2 GPUs without powered risers. It sucks that you destroyed a motherboard and PSU.

If you are good with soldering you can fix both the motherboard and PSU but you need special tools.

EDIT: Looking at your photo, looks like an old cheap mobo since it has an IDE connector probably not worth repairing. You can still use the PSU for Bitcoin ASICS.

I have plenty of power supplies, have to get a new motherboard.  I even had the clock speed on the GPU's clocked at 1000.  Oh well, gives me an excuse to get better cards in a month or so.  Until then, get a new MB and put the 280s back in.

I know, but funny thing, I have ran 3 280x's on that system for years with non powered risers and have never had a problem.  These draw less power but fried the board.  Powered risers (and a new motherboard) or on the way.  I'll wait to see what comes out with the 2nd gen of the 480s

Why did it got burned? Is it an issue in cooling? Or did it Overheat? or Hardware Malfunction?
