Meh, it's their forum, their bandwidth, their resources. They can set what limitations and restrictions they like.

I suggest that there should also be an option of donating 10 USD worth of bitcoins to become a poster.  Ten USD should be enough to weed out most spammers and the donations would help maintain the site.  Also eventually, the system in witcoin:
http://witcoin.com/

could be adopted, at least in part.  It makes spamming unprofitable.

Is this new ?

I made a reply into another forum some days ago without any restriction. Then I find myself locked into the newbies forum.

Weird.

Interesting concept of reducing spam entries.
A bit problematic if you have a legit question but have to do some other posts first before being able to post your original question.

When does this take effect?  I have 5 posts and > 4hrs yet am still a newbie

This.   Huh

While I do completely understand the reasons for this, and appreciate the reduced spam which has resulted from it, I would have quite a few more non-trolling posts had I been allowed to participate in the main forum, too.  Please, sir, can I play now?

EDIT: It works now!  Either it is >5 (i.e., six) posts required, or there's a wee lag.  Let the trolling begin!  Cheesy

Sooooo close, 30 more minutes and I lose my noob status. Does noob-stink wash off with regular soap or do I need like lavasoap or something?  Cheesy

This seems sensible but silly when i waited to join till i saw something relevant to my interest it looks like this would encourage "spam" in the newbies section simply to be allowed to do something productive

If you found that funny or something i said useful i always appreciate spare change

I'm with "unthinkingbit" (above) I think donating an small but not insignificant amount of bitcoin to the cause of keeping this forum up and running would discourage spammers....

In fact that's exactly what MiFi (metafilter) does! You can't post until you send a few bucks to them, and then I think you have to wait a week.

Not to beat a dead horse here, but here's the metafilter link that explains the philosophy (http://www.metafilter.com/about.mefi). Basically, its $5 and I think you have to wait a week. There is no spam on those boards and 50,000 users (12K active).
