i am still waiting on 970 reviews from my trusted reviewers. Just to note, i wont be paying for the 970's or the 980, i am swapping my 780 for them

seems the 970 is actually slightly faster then 780, even without overclocks, making an SLI, close to double, for £520.... WHAT???

...BUT, i read a lot in reviews that the OC versions of the 970 suck a lot of energy compared to stock.
In some tests the need 30-35w more compared to the 980 reference. It depends on the card/manufactor.

waiting for good miner reviews too - and for me personally the energy consumption is the most important factor!

i noticed that too, it seems that the oc version of the 970 isn't efficient at all if you compare it to the 980, and both oc end in the same consumption, which is strange

maybe the 980 is even more efficient than the 970? maxwell 2.1 mounted on it in disguise lol

Yep which we wont get for another 10 days or so when the cards are released properly i believe? atleast in the UK that is.

Power wise at 150w, 2 970's is better then my 780 at closer to 300W. But as you said, the 980 is only 175W i believe? plus i may end up with 2

that's why going to 2xGtx980 seems to be a good option...

step up program? you mean the one where you can upgrade to the next model for free if you brought your card after x date?

yes... might be interesting... considering some 980 monster edition might come out.

edit: but if some custom 980 with a larger memory bus come out... (... I mean there are plan for a 8Gb vram, so I assume they wouldn't keep the small memory bus...)

i was going to do it on my 780, but it only applies for anything released about 4 months after your purchase date. for me the 6GB 780 was released 6 months after i ordered my 780 so i couldn't use the program

don't read it wrong. the most reviews shows the wattage as complete system consumption - and that doesn't matter as long as the system stays the same for all cards. its just to get an overview of the different cards.

I pretend to buy for now a single 980GTX reference card (26 cm lenght) and my setup is being holded by an Aerocool 600W PSU:

i7 4770k@4.4GHz - aprox. 150W at full load
I will keep 3 750Ti on the system - aprox. 200W at full load with overclock
980 GTX reference model (2x 6 pins) - aprox. 200W-230W full load with a little overclock?!
1 SSD only - low power consumption

So we have: 150+200+200 = 550W-580W average

I have the 2 x 6 pins free to use in the 980GTX, I am using other powerlines to feed my 2x 750ti windforces, I will keep one PNY 750ti (just PCI-e/no extra power needed) and sell the other PNY.

Do you think my PSU will handle this or I will need at least a 850W PSU?

I would get a new PSU, don't forget PSU's do not work at their advertised rating due to power efficiency, which is around 92% on newer psu's

and also have a maximum 12v current.

I would go to 850w to be safe

actually, its 150w stock, any 3rd party ones will most likely be higher. and they overclock well apparently so expect 200w to be safe

that allows 150W by the 2 6 pins, and 50w from the MB

I'm going for EVGA's myself, but actually, I'm waiting for their ACX 2.0 version for the 970 (not available yet). It looks like they took the easy way out in reusing a cooler design for the 970's currently available... tsk tsk...

No need to wait much. Improved cooler versions (the stated ACX 2.0) were announced just as they released the 9xx cards...

I actualy have 8 EVGA 750ti's so I like the company.

I have never had to take EVGA up on it's guaranty/warranty policy, but I did set up an RMA about three months back. I had a card go suddenly to overheating in a big way (from ~68-ish all the time, it started hitting 90+ within a couple of seconds of starting mining). There were no issues setting it up, and I was going to send it out in about a week from that time. However, in the meantime, I thought "what the heck", and opened it up to check the thermal paste situation, and it was hard, uneven, and sickly looking. I ordered some Gelid Extreme, applied it, and now the card runs at ~62-ish - better than original. So I didn't need to RMA it. But EVGA emailed, and called me, to find out what had happened. Like they were disappointed that they didn't have to make good on their warranty. The impression I got, was that they are really concerned with their customers satisfaction. And that means a lot in today's marketplace.

I'm not an EVGA "fanboi", but I am pretty loyal to a company until I have a reason not to be. I'll continue to use EVGA products until I get taken for a ride.

yeh, i had the choice when i brought my 780, but evga has such a good reputation i would rather spend the extra.
Don't get me wrong, MSI make some amazing looking gpu's and i honestly love them, but im torn on if to get the normal evga with the "stock" shroud of the msi, it wont matter when waterblocks are out but at first, i believe the msi may have better cooling

Note Regarding the EVGA GTX 970 ACX

Note that a few people that have reviewed the EVGA 970 ACX SC had the early version of this card. EVGA has since started sending the new ACX 2.0 with all their new outgoing shipments. These should be shipping in the next round of stock once all the major retails replenish their supply.

I am not sure what improvment this may have on the performance but it certainly should affect the louder noise coming from these cards. So looks like holding out or waiting until the next batch ships would be a good idea.

My 04G-P4-0974 (old fan) arrives tomorrow so I should have a better idea then.

Also note that you qualify for a free backplate for the early version if you register with EVGA.
