Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

I'm sticking to my flawless bitcoin strategy. 1) Buy bitcoin 2) wait 600 days 3)?? 4)Profit!
Works every time. Or would have worked every time since August 2011. I'm just trying it now, (well, since Feb. this year) so we'll see.

I think it's down, all I get is a 502 Bad Gateway nginx error page when I try to access the site.

http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ shows it's up but it's probably getting the error page and reporting it as up because of that. Bitfinex went down because it was getting DDOSed about 10 days ago. Maybe it's getting DDOSed again.

Good morning Bitcoinland.

Still in the $270s I see, pretty much where we were before the weekend.

I'd yawn and go back to bed except the Bitfinex situation is en eye opener.

When I try their site I get an immediate 502 error so I assume it's a DDOS attack.

I'm surprised more is not being said about it here.

This calm with the price at 270-280 is reassuring. Bitcoin is out of the bear market and now is ambling along with negligible media attention. I suspect we will drift through 300 and the media will wake up as we pass 400-500.

Knowing how manipulated the market is I wouldn't be surprised if the move up from 219 to 316 was a deliberate move to break the bear trend knowing some major announcement is in the works. Accumulation prior to Gemini + ETF or something of that nature. Either way floating around at these prices with the halving roaring closer every day is fine by me.

I just checked Finex's Twitter and they posted this:

"We had an issue while rolling out an update, we're working to get the site back up ASAP. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Hopefully it's just a technical glitch.

Thanks, I have been regularly checking their tweets and they must have tweeted a minute after the last time I checked. This is the link to the latest one about an update problem.

https://twitter.com/bitfinex/status/623168945332158464

Btc-e also tweeted why they are offline. It's got something to do with a datacenter. Here's the link to it in case anyone want's to check for themselves.

https://twitter.com/btcecom/status/623116256334454784

It seems like it's only a coincidence that both sites went down about the same time.

edit/

Bitfinex is back up for me now.

this is why the winklevii will do so well when they launch. people will have much less suspicion/fear (often justified with gox etc) when their exchange is down

Bulls are happy to buy at 200-300. Every sell off will be bought.

Bitcoin investors wont be selling until the halving is here.

Bitfinex is back up for me now.

Me too. I guess they were right, just a glitch.

Hopefully they'll start showing on the various trackers soon. I see they are.

It would be nice to see BTCE up again soon too.

It might shut the trolls/sox up a little. The way they're farting you'd think we'd dropped $20.

One of the newer ones is particularly ridiculous. It can't even spell it's own name or the word "optimist" right and yet projects an air of pseudo-erudite intellectual superiority. Kids nowadays. LOL

I think the halving is far enough away to not really affect the price, but close enough to to be taken into consideration. I agree with Inca, no smart investor will let go of their Bitcoin until ether after the 2016 halving. Unless, one chooses to cash in part of their BTC at certain price goals.
