Well my kid and I finally found a bitcoin ATM worth using. The first one we went to wasn't buying BTC (boo!) and was selling at 22,000 (BTC 18100). The second one was 21,000/17200 buy, and the third one (a really simple thing) was selling bitcoin at 19,100.

So the kid bought $200 of bitcoins (just a bitpenny. Wow) and I picked up $20 of LTC myself (why not!). So at least we have somewhere that is moderately rational to buy if needed.

When I decide to sell I think I'll just get a BTC machine, stick it outside my house, and sell with a $5,000 spread. People apparently will pay it, go figure.

I had this conversation with someone over the summer actually. My thoughts are this...cars are a bad investment for the most part. I think in 20 years most people will be driving electric vehicles and legacy ICE vehicles will go the way of the dodo. Think about how many people drive cars that are over 20 years old. There are some..but I dont think its a majority.

Now there will always be collectors to some extent but that pool will continue to grow smaller and smaller. Eventually I think that even driving a ICE vehicle will become so expensive with carbon offsetting that most will not be able to afford it.

As this contraction of people who can afford it and people who have interest in legacy automobiles accelerates I think in the end you will only see the finest examples of 'classic' cars at car shows and museums. A very small market indeed.

Someone put it in simple terms: In very near future driving a car will soon be like riding a horse, recreational activity that very few will indulge but not on the public roads.

Will it be in 20 years or a bit more, like 25 or 30+ years - is the real question, but I do not expect to drive forever.

not sure any current cars will have any super value increase because cars dont mean as much now. back in the 60s and 70s cars were a right of passage. without one you were nothing. and chevelles, cudas, mustangs types were among the last of the greats. so lots of hunger among the older gen that missed out back then.

today the right of passage is the latest iThing.

on a personal note, ive kinda wanted a viper and a hellcat. just to scare the shit outta me. my reflexes arent what they used to be. but i cant see them as proper investments.  and supercars really dont interest me. im a 4wd kinda guy now.

Your blind faith in those electronic things is touching. I'm not sure if I'd keep anything that has too much electronica on the inside as an investment car. The charm of an old-timer is exactly in its mechanically driven power, not in its electronics. I'd still go for a 1995-2010 Mercedes, Saab or BMW, as long as it's in good condition and hasn't reached old-timer status yet, otherwise you might be too late already. And with as few electronics as possible.

edit: maybe that Tesla you're talking about but only that very specific one, and only for its exclusiveness, not because it's such an impressive car to drive.

I'd still go for a 1995-2010 Mercedes, Saab or BMW, as long as it's in good condition and hasn't reached old-timer status yet, otherwise you might be too late already. And with as few electronics as possible.

I think that would be a bad time frame to buy one of those.  More likely something older than those dates is better choice.

I used to play with 1960-1979 cars which had zero electronics.  Once the 80's came around most cars changed and started to get some electronics in them.

 I am pretty sure  1995 and newer Mercedes has electronics and 1995 BMW and newer has  electronic controls. I have a  friend that owned a BMW dealership/repair shop

So I think you are not picking an old enough date to make sure the cars are not computer tuned.

Let me clarify:

Of course, the older the better, and of course there's electronics in them, the newer they are, the more electronics. That's quite logical.

But in my country a car gets old-timer status at 30 years. So for anything before 1995, you're probably too late (we're talking purely from an investor's point of view).

edit: another clarification - I'm saying 1995 and not 1990 because once reaching around 25-26 years, prices are going up already because sellers are anticipating old-timer status already.
