I was playing bakbakrakiki on the 9th moon or Eldroonor the gamblers kept mentioning bitcoin. I won a big hand and the guy paid me off with this time cube. Supposed to give me more time, I fiddled with it a bit and it transported me to my current job in Morrisons Salford. I am waiting for my turn at reductions. That seems to be the key according to ziggy. The old lady comes on Wednesdays.

Hash war estimated costs live update

If one assumes the hashrate is leased, we estimate the protagonists have spent $6.7m in leasing fees since the split, generating combined gross losses of $4.6m. It is only a matter of time until this pointless battle ends.

I would like to hear people’s stories about how they first heard about Bitcoin ?

I was hanging out on a distributed computing forum.  As I recall we were all pissed at Stanford at the time as they were pointsgimping the AMD 4P systems that a lot of dedicated folders had significant investment wrapped up in (aside, there was this munchbucket 7im drove a bunch of us away...fuck you 7im!).

One day (found the thread, March 2011, 1BTC=$0.78) some guy wandered in,  and posted up a thread asking if bitcoin was frowned upon in our forum.  We were like, WTF is bitcoin?  He gave a brief explanation and 80% of the guys were all "scam, tulips, never work, criminal, GTFO".  I was a silver stacker from way back so I got it right away.

There was, at that time, no "make money button" yet.  You had to really grapple with the config to mine.  At first it was beyond me and I gave up for a while but I was interested and kind of kept an eye on it.  Some while later the GPU miners came out, probably laszlo's code, and I got a config running.

There was a time I was pulling a coin a day with 2 6950s.

Got Zhoutonged.

Lost a bunch to BFL.

Lost a bunch to Gox.

Lost a bunch daytarding.

edit/ wow, reading that old thread is surreal...thanks Hairy

The rich guy should learn to be a little selfless, focus on others a bit more with his 20m or however much.   Doesnt have to be charity exactly but he can consider to invest in the right places and make a big difference.    It might even cheer himself up a little
I dont exactly agree with Warren Buffet but the sensible thing of buying gold or whatever solid value .  It'll never give anything more then a completely passive return.  Wheres enabling growth which BTC imo has a possibility to be part of, that can transform the world

I would like to hear people’s stories about how they first heard about Bitcoin ?

I read about it in Wired Magazine in early 2013.  I was familiar with gold farming in WOW so it didn’t seem too outlandish.  It took a second mention in the media in November 2013 for me to pay attention and find this forum on google.

Middle of 2011 and I did some mining on  CPU and obviously I wish my brain had kicked into gear and I realised this had some relation to PGP in new effects and new technology on a software, protocol level & how this was a new horizon.  I shouldnt have tried to guess will it be sucessfull, just the concept it had never been tried before.  That alone should have been enough, instead I was like yea this takes forever just to get 0.1 btc and I didnt even save my mining proceeds.
I did try gfx mining a few times, it was being a hassle so I gave up.
Couple years later a load of us from mainstream computer forums were involved, actually mid or early summer 2013 it declined in profit taking as often BTC does.  Calmed down alot and then took off again into the year end, making the TV just like last year.   I presume momentum was abroad & a slight mystery to me, far east and to me I never was sure who was using it alot and only understood later China liked it.   2014 onwards the alt coin sector had alot more interest, many wanting to step onboard on day 1 with various ideas, variations the majority erroneous
So say 100$+ was my price of entry back then, alot of users were miners first and speculating in hardware to in turn gain BTC.   One guy I know rewired his whole house for mining in late 2013, if I'd been more serious in 2011 era I'd say that was the oldtimer Jurassic period  Tongue

I actually 1st heard about BTC when price was around $5. I think it was that StumbleUpon app that landed me at the Bitcoin web page
(I stumbled all over the farm back then)
I seem to recall that I was kind of intrigued and my thought at the time was "huh, what the hell... I'll invest 50 bux and buy 10 of these things."
So then I started browsing around on the bitcoin website trying to figure out how the hell you buy em . I gave up after awhile thinking
"ahhhh fuckit! Not worth the hassle and anyway it's probably just another internet scam...."
Yeah right...look how that worked out...

I ended up buying like $100 worth at the end of 2013 (I figured it out by then) I think @ $600/BTC or so, right before the pump to $1300. That basically got me hooked into BTC and mining and crypto in general.

I stumpled on bitcoin back in the autumn of 2012 through a random google search: At the time I was thinking of investing my surplus student loan (a few hundred usd worth) and thought about possible industries that I should invest in. I had this notion that the internet revolution wasn't over yet but rather one industry at a time was still being revolutionzed from the less conservative to more conservative. I tried to think of industries that were ultra conservative and hadn't really been digitized yet. Banking was the obvious answer (actually thought of car industry first) and after some random googling I stumpled on Bitcoin through pure luck.

Bought Bitcoin with everything I had to spare at 9usd IIRC. Couldn't believe my luck when Bitcoin started mooning soon thereafter and, of course, sold most like a fool. I hadn't really thought through my investment strategy in the case if I actually was right. You could say I took a big investment risk but hadn't properly planned on how to take profit out of it which was idiotic. In the end, I still have about 25% my original Bitcoin. And, no, I'm not rich as I only had very little money to invest back then. But I did pay back my student loan with profits which was nice.

Well, they are still laughing because they are clueless morons. But then, you might be laughing too.

Gentlemen, we are the 1%. The actual 1% that matter. The fiatsters will be removed in due course, but bitcoin is not money. It is a thing, it is data. As hyperinflation hits, so too will bitcoin continue to rise. Hodl fast.

I hear there's  a lot of  college grads out there buried in debt right now.
Like you, they'd be a hell of a lot better off had they got on bitcoin boat*  rather than the boat they are in now.

College is a huge scam.  People are going into debt for thousands of dollars for a useless piece of paper.  You can already learn everything for free with all the resources out there.  It's quite funny, the wealthiest people I know didn't even attend college.

This may be off topic but the majority of wealth being created is going straight to the top.  We are more productive than ever but wages have been stagnant.  Younger generations can barely even afford to live with the rising housing and medical costs.  Capitalism is going to implode on itself.

I first came across it from a news article on the BBC's website (of all places) back at the end of Feb 2013. The little tyke had just surpassed its previous ATH.

From a deep cynicism of the traditional financial system, it was like a breath of fresh air.

That sounds nice and all until we find out bitcoin was created by the government/ illumanti/ CIA/NWO so they could test out a world currency.

I read about it in some geek forum, came here to take a look and made myself an account. Must have been 2011. Never thought I'd actually get any. They are useless nerdy whatnots, right? Then I found out that another nerdy thing I'd read about was in actual use and worked fairly well. Something about onions. I found out there were people around the world willing to take nerdy whatnots for actual merchandise, quite hard to come by in other ways.

So I bought some, a bit more than I actually needed, just to be sure - at $6-$7 each, then $10. It was a bit of a hassle to buy. Spent some, lost some in the Old West scene it was at the time. Hedl some. Never really stopped buying just for the heck of it, even when my hunger for onions vanished. I even mined a little with my Nvidia GPU while it was still slightly profitable - like 0.02-0.03 a day. Deepbit anyone?

I came here at regular intervals. Read Meta and Speculation mostly. One day I felt like posting, but the old account was too easy to connect to my other personas. Remember what happened to DPR. Not that I have anything to hide, but you know. A little disconnection is always a good thing. Make a new account. And here I am.

This shit again. It doesn't matter who created it. It is what it is and it can not be shut down. It is almost literally a force of nature at this point.

Dunno about you peasants, but I studied physics.... 100% worth it.

Any degenerated "college" with imaginary courses like gender studies is a scam without a doubt. Thats why you study at european universities.
