The FED, the government or the US themselves cannot afford to lose the leadership role played by the dollar. If they lose the dollar, they are going to be irrelevant.
That's all, in the big scheme of things, terrorists, fraudster and tax evasion can be dealt with.
But once you lose power, this is difficult to be gained back.
