Sort of: I have had Leaf lithium batteries catch fire (A123 pouch cells) and it's kind of impressive to watch. The fire does not require outside oxygen so tossing water or smothering agents on it does not help too much. Now that I think about it, I haven't tried a Halon fire extinguisher.

Natural gas is a bit more of a known element. I'll stick with L16 batteries to serve as a backup myself; the extra power density of lithium is not worth it for home use.
