           Why would you say it is stupid? I think its a good parameter for evolution.
Cause for the mutation is a protein at work, effect of it can be beneficial or not, doesn't matter.
Cause for the protein is basis of life(chemistry) every thing matches. Model works so it cant be stupid.
Very important thing is that both theory's (god&evolution) don't contradict each other.
However there is no proof for the first one
          There are plenty of "positive" mutation examples: Denser bone structure ( even in terms of century's ),
broadening colour vision, malaria resistance ( I had malaria once, I was just tired, cool example actually because gene that causes anaemia is not active in my body thus giving me resistance to this parasite ), cholesterol disposal systems, ability to digest milk of other mammals and much more, those are just for humans. Other life form have much more vivid examples, check radiation resistant at Chernobyl fungi, plants or small rodents.

There isn't any random. We simply don't know what is happening in nature because we are so weak at understanding what causes the effects.

Lightening strikes because of a bunch of things that happen in the atmosphere and on/in the ground. We just don't have the ability to track them. None of them are random. They all follow very precise rules of physics.
