Does anyone think it's possible that AMD wrote into the latest driver a throttling factor for mining just for the launch in order to give gamers some 'breathing room' on launch.  This might explain the divergent rumours earlier on (older drivers) with current findings today.  Especially with the blower style cooler, be curious to see what AIB partners do for cooling and if hash get's better with 'update'

 Huh Huh Huh

Bingo.

Bingo.

Really? I read this and don't know what to think...

Here is a shocker, maybe, just maybe the rumors were full of shit?

But nooooo, it is much easier to believe there is some grand conspiracy to artificially hinder mining performance at launch just to appease gamer's, many of whom probably are also miners when they are not gaming. Yep, that's it, AMD is going to risk giving market-share to their competitor Nvidia just so they can appease some bitchy gamer who already whines about the price when they could instead be selling them to miners who will gladly pay $100 over MSRP. Sorry, but your pie in the sky dreams of a killer mining card aren't coming true with this release.

I guess no one bothered to calculate max theoretical ETH hashrate. 70-100 was never realistic for this card.

Vega memory BW: 484GB/s
DAG mem fetched per hash: 8kB
max theoretical hashrate: 484/8 - 60.5MH/s

Either Vega's arch is terrible for random access reads, or the miner software still needs to be optimized for the new architecture. Somewhere around 75-85% efficiency is reasonable assuming Vega isn't trash. So around 45-55MH/s could be possible. 70+? lol

Tinkering with HBM2 timings is not as straightforward as it is for DDR. Does AMD even expose ability to tweak the timings? I would be quite surprised if they do.

Has anyone reported power consumption while mining yet?

There ya go AMD...
2 out 3 of my clients switched to nvidia 1080ti JUST BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT GET VEGA TODAY, what a great beginning!

Your clients got lucky then, initial reports are that the 1080Ti is a lot better hash per watt than that of the Vega. Even accounting for future driver and BIOS mods improvements, the best Vega could do is maybe catch up.

With the early price gouging retail prices look to be about on par as well, so it looks to be a long road ahead for Vega in terms of becoming the mining champion everyone hoped for.

Also top brass at AMD is "going to keep an eye on mining but don't really count on it for future growth" whereas Nvidia top brass thinks "mining is here to stay". Tell me which company might put more effort into optimizing their hardware and drivers for mining since direction usually is driven from the top down.

Some early sites did do the calculations and stated as much, problem was once people heard the 70 Mhash rumor there was too much desire to believe and ignore the facts.

Early testing does show the Vega getting into the low 40's when upping the power limit, but power usage also shoots through the roof with over 350 watts just for the card, or 450 for the entire system (1 card test). So yes it can put out some hashes if you don't care about power use at all, so while it may be ideal for college dorms, mom and dad's basement, etc., with free electricity arrangements, but not so good for everyone else.

As far as I know the bios is locked down (encrypted) so any attempts to modify it will not be able to be flashed to the card without being able to encrypt the file with an AMD approved key. So only software tweaks for now are possible.

I took everyone through a very detailed deep dive in PT. 2 tonight. Bottom line:

Our highest was 44.097mh with 33% to Power Limit, Stock GPU, 1100mem on Ethereum; all on video Pt.2 is extensive walkthrough, but a crazy 530w total system (405w! card);

Best Rate was Power Limit to -40%, GPU Clock to 1550, MEM 1100; 30.9mh @ 245w total system (135w) for RX Vega ...yes, 135w power usage, not 300+

All on video ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRDZkN8nq1g

So it produces more MH/s in a powersavemode, than in turbo? So with more memory on board, and more heat it produces, its performance may be even lower. Hmm...
what? HBM barely uses power
Actually it uses 60% less power than DDR5, but 4 8GB chips use quite a lot (3.3 Watts each).

maybe it needs mem timing updates or something 30 mhs at 135 is barely better than a 1070, 570 or 580

wolf0 has done very good bios work on amd cards

so when wolf0 has numbers for the card I will believe what he has to say

At wolf0  buy solar and I will be build a new farm he plans to put up a second solar array allow us to do 27kwatts 24/7 in the winter  and 40 kwatts  24/7 in the summer

27 kwatts would be 80 cards at 300 watts a card.  well 64 cards

I would not mind buy a bios from you  for the vega 64 when you have one.

all I ask is   watt use per card for eth along with hash rate

same for watt use per card for zec with hash rate

Since I know we will need to buy cards  I would like to know what you can do before I buy a bios.

I am most likely going to use  1080ti's  and vegas on the new farm with some avalon 741's

Some early sites did do the calculations and stated as much, problem was once people heard the 70 Mhash rumor there was too much desire to believe and ignore the facts.

Early testing does show the Vega getting into the low 40's when upping the power limit, but power usage also shoots through the roof with over 350 watts just for the card, or 450 for the entire system (1 card test). STOP SAYING SHIT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT >.>

It is NOT encrypted, it is just signed. I've already ported many of my tools.

Well maybe encrypted wasn't the proper term, but it was a late night after an all-dayer trying to tweak the damn thing. In any event, it the BIOS is protected right now for most of us mere mortals without private tools.

Anyway, if you did crack into the BIOS can you kindly let us know the max hashrate and power usage you have obtained? This would at least give us a better idea of its potential as right now everything is speculation with it being locked down and in this locked down state the results are dismal.

Nice job, i appreciate your report. Sad news for vega tho. Those results are nothing better than a gtx 1070 that released like what, a year ago? And you get that on a 1070 without much configuration of OC settings.

Anyway, if you did crack into the BIOS can you kindly let us know the max hashrate and power usage you have obtained? This would at least give us a better idea of its potential as right now everything is speculation with it being locked down and in this locked down state the results are dismal.

False, you don't need private tools - I posted a solution:

I see Vega 64 benchmarks 34.4 mh/s for eth.
I would think the cards can do 43-46 mh/s if a good bios with memory timings is applied.

One would be better off buying 2 x 470 or 2x 480 or 2x 580 or 2 x 570 or 2 x 1060 3gb samsung memory cards.
The performance per cost would be cheaper if going this route.

Currently I see new 1060 and 470 cards under $240.   At 22-28 mh/s per card, this is the best "new" card deal out there.

Where do you live?
In US, I only see those for $270-400, maybe you can find cheaper on ebay, but not easily.

I'm in Silicon Valley.
newegg *had* a sapphire 470 "mining" for $239.99
The nvidia gtx 1060 3gb I've seen sell for $215 to $230 on amazon (wanna get the Samsung memory ones).

Been available *3* times since they first started listing it, as far as I can tell - and "quantity one per person" with a 48 hour timeout - and it's ALWAYS been out by the time the timeout expired.
2 of those 3 times it sold out in LESS than an hour, the 3'd time they actually had them in stock for a bit over 1 day (which is when I managed to get mine).

Most of the time the lowest-cost RX 4570/480/570/580 cards they have IN STOCK are over $300.

I'm no longer legendary just in my own mind!
