I believe that they're popular mainly because well it was the first of all cryptocurrencies to be made. Honestly most of the other coins are scams and greedy ways that the developers make money. The only other coin I can think of that isn't a scam are dogecoins! What do you think?
Actually you'd be surprised at the number of people thinking that altcoins are superior to bitcoin. However as you said, the majority still prefer bitcoin as their day to day cryptocurrency and their go to place to store their wealth. I think that the main reason is bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, and the longest lasting. Another reason is that altcoins have proven to die off over time. For instance, Namecoin was the first altcoin but now nobody uses it. It used to have a lot of hype as well. Litecoin was ASIC resistant but that wore off over time somewhat, so now its popularity is not even half of Ethereum's. Based on this we can safely deduce that Ethereum and other altcoins will probably be replaced by new altcoins in 4-5 years time. The fact is that you can always have better lines of code based on the previous coin, but you can't write the reputation of a coin on lines of code. And bitcoin has a lot of reputation for what it does. |

Because Bitcoin already has established infrastructure. There are sites, companies and merchants who accepted Bitcoin, big exchanges, local exchanges in almost every country, lots of people who accept it or willing to spend. Now, if you take some altcoin, you will have a very hard time exchanging it for your local currency or finding a place where you can spend it. The reason for this is because people don't see any need to work with altcoins if Bitcoin works just fine. Bitcoin is the first ever crypto-currency that set and established a price on the market. It's a great thing for Bitcoin because the popularity is not that hard to gain and the development on the price and transaction is also well developed on some case. At the end bitcoin can control the transaction because it also set security measures for the users to experience. In the side of investing bitcoin is also a great way to have an investment. |

Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency because it is in a form of digital, it was made through net or web. No one controls it when it comes to transactions. They are not like other currencies that are printed or what we call traditional money or currency.
Bitcoin can be the next generation of currency.
It is still being adopted by many and like what I have read even the government can not stop Bitcoin. That is why Government just decided to adopt it too. Power to Bitcoins !

So Bitcoin is the most popular crypto currency just because it was the first e-currency to be made and now on, other currencies are being made by the idea of Bitcoin. Not every other Altcoins are scam, some of them are really mean to replace money in the future, mean to be used by everyone. |

Bitcoin is the most popular because it is the pioneer in crypto currency. The blockchain technology is presented to the market with this coin by its inventor Mr. Nakamoto. So people started understanding crypto currency technology with this coin only and started accepting it. Any other currency is just a little modification from the main technology and not original. I believe, that is the reason why it is so immensely popular every after having few faults in it. Olso a lot of people have invested a lot of money in to bitcoin since a long time and they have got a huge profit from it. |

So Bitcoin is the most popular crypto currency just because it was the first e-currency to be made and now on, other currencies are being made by the idea of Bitcoin. Not every other Altcoins are scam, some of them are really mean to replace money in the future, mean to be used by everyone. i think it is the most popular currency because bitcoin is providing opportunities to the people to make money from bitcoin through trading and investment. do not think that there is any other currency which is providing you such opportunity. |

Well i can not say that altcoins are scamming coins, there are some altcoins that are really strong and stable. Well i guess that bitcoin is most popular because like you said, it was the first in crypto currency business. That was really big deal, in crypto currency world. And i guess that it stayed like that because bitcoin is the best, but maybe i am wrong. |

There;s so many coin that is not scam and you can use in many purpose. First before saying coins are scam check they're supply and check the developer because nowadays many coins are produce with specific use but the bitcoin is popular because the bitcoin is the medium of all cryptocurrency. I think why bitcoin is the most popular cyprocurrency in all crypto coin because this coin is the first coin the price price is very big. And bitcoin strated in 2009 and until 2017 this coin is here. So many people ineterested to invest to this coin. And I hope bitcoin become more popilar to the whole world so the price will increase more and everyone will benefits.

Being the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin received a lot of media attention that pretty much all other altcoins don't get. Because of this, a lot more people invested into Bitcoin compared to altcoins and raised the price of it. This just kept the ball rolling as more and more media attention was gained when the price of Bitcoin was rising. That gave a lot of people a little push that they needed to invest into Bitcoin and this then made the price even higher. I would say that Bitcoin is the most popular currency because it is the most valuable cryptocurrency and it has received the most media attention. To answer your second question, most other coins are not scams, but I can understand why you might think that. Many of the other coins have a lower value which makes people think that it is a crappy investment because it will probably just crash at any moment. But what they don't realize is that it was the same when Bitcoin first came out. Most altcoins die out after a short period of time, with some exceptions of course. And they don't really gain that much attention, other than ethereum, which makes them unknown to 99.9% of the population. The combination of a low price and a lack of attention mean that altcoins are a lot less popular than Bitcoin. |

Another reason is many people including young and adult gained profit in bitcoin thus they naturally spread the word that made bitcoin famous. lastly alt coin takes time before it emerge thats why it gives time to bitcoin to take all the spotlight.
