Many AltCoins aren't scams... They are just projects that failed, but I believe the intention of their creators wasn't to scam the adopters, they want to make their coins increase its price, they want to see people adopting it, they put some different features on their coins which make them a bit different from Bitcoin, but people don't buy it... it is popular because it helps us to have an extra income and gain a lot .i think it is popular now a days because many people had an interest on ot because of its good background and feedback to those who gain on it. Bitcoin is now a no.1 source of extra income because ypu can really do it in a  single vacant time.

There's more to it, I think, since there are other altcoins which gained some popularity right after Bitcoin was first released.
The difference is that they still lack the infrastructure around them, they have almost no merchants accepting them outside of the crypto-sphere.

You could say that Bitcoin is slowly losing its dominance, especially when you look at the market cap of Bitcoin vs altcoins (ETH), but that has more to do with speculation than anything else imo.

I believe it is because of its value, when bitcoin started it no one even bothered to think of it as an investment opportunity but now everyone is getting hype of getting atleast 1 bitcoin which makes it very popular specially this year 2017.

I guess this question is not necessary we already know that bitcoin is the most popular but why? I guess the only reason is because it is the original and it is the first or in short the origin of all of this cryptocurrency we already know that bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency so probably no doubt about it it is the first one to become successful in some ways that why it has cost a lot in all of time and the number one because basically the other are just alternative token or in short just a copy of bitcoin.
