I would say it was successful because of the name. People really believed it was free and that you'll get free bitcoins. But in reality the website was not a faucet site but really a gambling site where a lot of new bitcoin users get addicted to it and by trying to get the jackpot every time. I think more than 50% of current bitcoin users have used freebitco.in when they started.

No. The site is purely on faucet and not as a gambling site. The gambling site is just an additional features by them but for year/s they are only on faucet activity without anything else included. And I think their gambling game is not that appealing even with the new bitcoin users so Im disagree for your sayings that lot of new bitcoin users get addicted to this.

They become succesful because they are one of the highest paying faucet back then. I used to experienced their 1,000 satoshis reward per hour back then when the bitcoin price is still on $200 above IIRC.

Simply buying cloud mining power will most certainly not be profitable for users because they usually do not hedge against price and difficulty increases. We would prefer to manage everything ourselves and just give a fixed return to the user so that the investment is truly passive and risk-free for them.

That would be a stupid move, because Freebitco.in has already won over the trust from many loyal users and they can just tap off on this reputation to launch new products. A whole new site will need a lot of marketing and building a trust relationship with new users, which they already have.

If you have a existing loyal user base, you can build on top of that with ease. You can also lose that trust if you run a illegal cloud mining / Ponzi scheme, which they are saying that they are not doing.
