Yes, mining is really 2000 and late. Forging FTW! It's unbelievable how much electricity we burn at this time for generating coins. I hope this will end as soon as possible.

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

its not just some nebulous environmental cost either. that cost is baked into the coin in either the form of inflation or unnecessarily high transaction fees.

+ lots.

On the marketing side, we do need to play on how efficient and eco-friendly NXT is, in comparison to certain other cryptos that seem to want to eat all the electricity.

I have an idea for both PR, the unclaimed coins and being green :

Figure out how much energy the NXT network uses, then set up a carbon-offset project using some of the unclaimed coins.
NXT becomes the worlds first carbon-neutral, tree loving, planet-saving crypto.

If any one has the time to pick this up and run with it, feel free.

Bitcoin network hash rate is at 16,500,000 GH/s. Split it up on countries (USA, Canada, Germany, Russia, China,...). After you know how much GH/s each country has, check out how much a kW/h costs in this countries. Now calculate how much watt (W) you need for this GH/s and check the prices for each kW/h in each country.

Yes for bitcoin using the GH/s it would be fairly easy to calculate the cost. Plus all of the e-waste generated from old worthless equipment that is no longer run because it costs more to run then it brings in.

NXT however can run on anything. Old hardware can be re-purposed for NXT.

I think it may be harder to calculate the usage of NXT, is there anyway to query how many nodes are up and running at any given time?

NXT VPS Server Donations can be sent here: 6044921191674841550
At the end of each month I will donate some of them back to the community.
This is separate from my main wallet so you can keep track of them. I will keep them in there and only use them for hosting.

nxt really is the model for distributed autonomous corporations. Inorder to have thousands or millions of blockchains that are all secure it is imperative that they not be in competition with one another for the resources that make them secure. with mining, the strength of one blockchain is the weakness of another. Or put differently, every hash/s on blockchain a is a hash/s that is not available to secure blockchain b. with the nxt framework we can have an almost infinite number of secure blockchains. this is a prerequisite for a vibrant ecosystem of distributed autonomous corporations.

*edit* i may write a paper about this

This article is great. Much food for thought.
It fits in with the discussions on voting and fees we've been having the last few days.
Giving it a more thorough read tomorrow.

Thanks for posting this!
