I can't even solo mine anymore after all those invalids started going through.  When I'm starting up cgminer it's coming up with difficulty 498 and finding blocks to where it says block found message and doesn't come up as accepted or rejected though. I checked the difficulty through the wallet and it is coming out with the correct amount, just cgminer is showing wrong difficulty of 498.

Looks like we are under attack and there's a fork. I'll do some more investigation and provide an updated version for GRA.

What has probably happened is the same thing that happened to ADT and COL.  Once POS began, and POS became a majority of the network POW mining ceased to work.  Both coins are now POS only, and they have yet to find a solution to the problem (or atleast have yet to fix either coin).  I believe Grain is now probably a POS only coin until major fixes can be made.  And maybe that's not a bad thing.  This coin just became far more valuable because most of the coins that will ever be minted are now minted.  Congrats! Us holders are now richer

Problem: If we cannot mine, doesn't that mean that nobody will solve for new blocks, thus transactions cannot occur?

Hence, POS doesnt make money, so why would anyone do a POS/POW job when POW doesn't work?

Transactions can still occur under a POS only coin.

Yes this is probably what happened. A check with blockexplorer shows that the last successful PoW block occurred at block 38849, and from that point on, only PoS generated...
