A treaty signed in 1994 by the US and Britain could pull both countries into a war to protect Ukraine if Putin’s troops intervene.

The Budapest Memorandum was signed by Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kuchma – the then-rulers of the USA, UK, Russia and Ukraine – as part of the denuclearization of former Soviet republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union

Technically it means that if Russia has invaded Ukraine then it would be difficult for the US and Britain to avoid going to war.

Sir Tony Brenton, who served as British Ambassador from 2004 to 2008, said that war could be an option ‘if we do conclude the [Budapest] Memorandum is legally binding.’

It promises to protect Ukraine’s borders, in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons.

Today Kiev has demanded the agreement is activated after insisting their borders had been violated.

In response Mr Brenton said in a BBC radio interview: ‘If indeed this is a Russian invasion of Crimea and if we do conclude the [Budapest] Memorandum is legally binding then it’s very difficult to avoid the conclusion that we’re going to go to war with Russia’.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2570335/Former-British-Ambassador-Moscow-warns-Russia-invaded-Ukraine-difficult-avoid-going-war.html

Relevant quotes from the Budapest Memorandum:

"The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their commitment to seek immediate United Nations Security Council action to provide assistance to Ukraine, as a non-nuclear-weapon State Party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, if Ukraine should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used."

"The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will consult in the event a situation arises which raises a question concerning these commitments."

The Consulting
Russia: We want this
US: Shit.. bro you signed this doc
UK: Yeah mang, quit that shit
Russia: Fucks given == none, peace
US: wat
UK: God dammit Russia

Ukraine PM warns of war as Russian military seizes control in Crimea

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/01/ukraine-warns-russia-military-crimea-intervention-war

"Kiev puts armed forces on full combat alert. Putin and Obama hold 90-minute call over crisis. UN security council meets for emergency talks."

Like I wrote here 10 days ago, the parallels between Putin's and Hitler's ascension to power and subsequent actions is crystal clear.

Russian soldiers are just standing around doing shit, providing "security." As bad as that may seem, I think it may be better to just let people stand around doing shit, than turn it into a full war that none of the citizens, neither in Crimea, nor rest of Ukraine, want. And I can't think of any options that Obama might have that would not result in bullets flying.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean_sovereignty_referendum,_1991

Quote
A referendum on sovereignty was held in Crimean Oblast on 20 January 1991.[1] Voters were asked whether they wanted to re-establish the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which had been abolished in 1945. The proposal was approved by 94% of voters.

I am Ukrainian, live in Ukraine. And here what I think.

Most of protestors were peaceful. But Libia, Egypt and Syria scenario had been played in full. Now far-right forces got the power and terrify people here. Especially russian-spoken people who live in Crimea and South-East.

No police. No laws. Only fear.

Russian army really invaded Crimea to stop those neo-fascists called right sector. And this was without any battle, as most crimeans are russians and they support Russian army.

New neo fascist government now mobilizes regular citizens to fight againsts russian professionals without weapons (all weapons were  already sold to Georgia and other hot spots through corruption schemes). I don't take this mobilization seriosly, because this would bee shoot in the meat.

Future. I think World War 3 will start from here. Unfortunately.  Thanks to EU/US who actively supported fascists.

No, this is simply not true.

Obama would have zero support for military intervention or action such as this.

Zero.

Exactly. I sure hope Russia won't invade Eastern Ukrain. Some fired shots should be enough to escalate this incident into a war.

Would hardly be a "war" though.
