I am researching if this is a coin i would like to invest, but overhere I am reading a lot about scam yes/no.
What is the historie and what are The future plans for VTC?
These days it is getting more and difficult to select the good coins.

Vertcoin was the first asic-resistant coin on the market. This is important, especially for the future of cryptos because mining equipment is getting better and better and thus more and more expencive to mine. This is different with Vertcoin because distribution by mining is not dependend from the equipment and so it is more equal to everyone. Because it was the first coin which implemented the asic-resistance it has the advantage being the first, like Bitcoin and Litecoin. Some say it will become the new Litcoin and I actually think so too, but nobody knows of course.
Probably somebody else could explain this coin better but thats are the basic facts i think.
About scam: havent any bad experience with Vertcoin until now...developing team is good and you can see a permanent progress in this coin.

conversations here are mainly about mining...see how stable the price was during the last weeks. stable prices are boring for most of the people because there is little opportunity to make profit. But now the big investors are coming back again as you can see on cryptsy. If you have doubts dont invest! but I think it is a good time now and if i had some more btc left i would buy even more vtc.

I think the pump hasn't begun yet, there have been several 40 BTC walls on cryptsy the last few days at around .0021 and .0022, his is just some whales hoarding VTC, once their bellies are full of cheap VTC then the pump begins.

Can somebody help?
I have followed the guide to compile and set up vertminer at vertcoin.org, though I get the following error upon using this command:

I have been trying to get this to run for weeks!
I will offer a bounty of 15 vertcoin + 1 week of vertcoin mining with 2 280xs and 4 7950s.

You need to have a software development toolkit, which varies from distribution to distribution.

Where would i get a toolkit for xubuntu 12.10.

Use QTcreator it will also give you a graphic interface
download from https://qt-project.org/downloads
and run vertcoin-qt.pro from your vertcoin folder

Alternatively (no graphic interface)
make -f makefile.unix on your src folder

Or just do

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vertcoin/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vertcoin-qt

I now have vertminer compiled, however I am back to the original error.

Is this a problem with the drivers, I installed catalyst drivers with this:

sudo aticonfig --lsa
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial
sudo reboot

I have also compiled sgminer. I get the (core dumped) error with that too.

Yea actually some people just woke up and started realizing this, there's are two new walls above the one at 40BTC that are 5-6BTC each and people are starting to place buy orders too.

And about drk I still can't completely get my head around it, but I'm staying away from mining and owning it.

A quick way to really catch up on vtc would probably be to listen some of the zero fiat podcasts where he has interviews with the various devs and important figures in the vertcoin space. There is one where you hear boris talk and one where you hear the guy who went to the digital currency convention in New york and presented vertcoin to the audiences.
