I don't know how many times we have to publicly say "VTC will hardfork if necessary to keep ASICs out" - we must have said it a hundred times!

I'll say it again, in case repetition number 101 will help - VTC will hardfork if that every becomes necessary to keep ASICs out. This isn't LTC, we're not going to suddenly decide to give up and capitulate in the face of a need to hardfork, we will do whatever is necessary to keep VTC decentralised and in part that means excluding ASICs by whatever means necessary.

2 questions:
1) What exactly is a "hard fork" and how does it prevent ASICs from adapting to the algorithm in-use.
2) How can one tell exactly when ASICs have penetrated VTC mining, vs when GPU's shift to VTC mining because ASICs have forced them out of Scrypt?

1a) A "hard fork" is a change to the source code for the coin that affects the way the blockchain is implemented - such as the hashing algoirthm used in the PoW to solve a block. This fork requires all users of the software to upgrade. This can be done in a large community, within a few weeks - maybe a month at most. Well organised and practiced, could be done in a week or so after implementation.

1b) It takes lots of money and a considerable (12-18 months maybe or so) to research, develop and manufacturer ASICs capable of mining the existing algorithm.

Now if it takes weeks to change, and months as well as hundreds of thousands of pounds or more to re-develop... what Is the incentive?

This isn't LTC, we're not going to suddenly decide to give up and capitulate in the face of a need to hardfork, we will do whatever is necessary to keep VTC decentralised and in part that means excluding ASICs by whatever means necessary.

2 questions:
1) What exactly is a "hard fork" and how does it prevent ASICs from adapting to the algorithm in-use.

A hard-fork usually refers to a software update that causes disagreement between the new version and older version as to what constitutes a valid block (like changing the proof of work algorithm would do). This will cause the old and new versions to be on different chains for future blocks, a fork in the chain (hence the hard-fork term). ASICs won't be able to adapt without redesigning the chip since they're highly specialised circuits (one of the reasons they're so much faster than GPU/CPUs is that they can cut away all the generalised stuff and use more die area for specialised computational logic). So many changes of the proof-of-work algorithm will make them useless for mining Vertcoin.

Quote from: usao
2) How can one tell exactly when ASICs have penetrated VTC mining, vs when GPU's shift to VTC mining because ASICs have forced them out of Scrypt?

This is purely hypothetical at this point, so let's consider Litecoin. You can't tell exactly, but you'll know when ASICs are starting to take over. If you compare the scrypt1024 asics to GPUs, e.g. the zeusminer 90mhash miner, that is ONE piece of hardware that equals ~120 radeon 280x, at a fraction of the power usage.. those 280x would use like 32kW while the zeusminer will use what, 1.2kW? Since most large miners are limited by the amount of electricity their houses/facilities can provide, this means that they can replace all their gpus with asics and gain a ~27x increase in hashrate at the same power consumption. Now imagine if they all did that, I'm sure you can see how that will quickly push out anyone gpu mining. These numbers gets even worse when you consider the KNC Titan..

Do any other have problem with:

vert.bitcrush.info - VTC Mining Pool

I can not get any confirmation email for cash out or for change account settings.
(do not ask to check spam filter / trash can. They are not there.)

I have tried to contact pool admin using contact form in the pool and also via normal email (admin@....  ). No answer.

After registering account get normally confirmation email and also first time I change account settings (add VTC address this email confirmation works just ok.  This time I forget set auto cash out. Then I have tried change settings and also for manual cash out. Can not because no confirmation email for this.

Of course I have immediately stopped mining there and changed my rigs to other pool (until this problem is solved).

If some other have been troubles inside some last days how you have solved confirmation email problems?

Yeah, those shares will never get ROI...ever.

I only bought into them for some easy trading action but holding that stuff is stupid.

One of the longest running, most trusted VTC pools around, run by BorisTheSpider (of the VTC dev team)

P2Pool (recommended) and traditional pool available for VTC

P2Pool: http://p2pool.vtcpool.co.uk:9171
Merged mining proxy (VTC+MON): http://p2pool.vtcpool.co.uk:9555
Traditional MPOS pool: https://vtcpool.co.uk

P2Pool setup guide and FAQ

Why use p2pool?

  • Mined coins are deposited directly in your wallet in the generation payment for the block,
they are never held by a pool wallet and can't be lost due to failures or hacking/thefts
  • Even if the node you connect to fails, you don't lose the coins you mined - your shares are distributed on the network
  • Distributed (less vulnerable to DoS attacks, less chance of big pools having enough hashrate to be capable of a 51% attack)
  • Private (you are paid with coinbase transactions and your public key is never seen on the network until you spend the funds)

Feel free to use https://vtcpool.co.uk if you prefer a traditional pool. Especially, users with lower hashrates may find earnings
are better on the traditional pool. There is room for a mixture of pool types, but please help further strengthen the decentralisation
of Vertcoin by using p2pool if it works well for you.

if it was a scam would not have so many people in the pool

from the pool in Home page - "IMPORTANT: Read about account security - Check you spam folder for mails! - An issue with emails has been resolved!"

Of course I have checked spam folder, far before any other things. (do you think all internet users are childrens)

There is not ANY email from this pool inside spam folder or trash can. I'm not children who just have learned to play nintendo.

Also, admin email address rejects emails.
Also, contact form on the pool internet side  generate this message: "There was a problem sending your message. Please try again. "

Yes of course I can see there is over 700 active miners. This proof that there is not problem, least with my confirmation emails?

I have get just two emails from this pool. First regitratin and second normal confirmation letter for 1st time change account details. (this time add my VTC address). Also these emails arrive just normally but after then I try cash out. No conf email. I try add autopay limit, no conf email.

After then I have tried several times. Nothing.
After then I have send email to admin. (this rejected back with "error note" "delayed")
After then I use contact form on the pool side. No answer.
After then I try this agen. Result: "There was a problem sending your message. Please try again. "
After then I have tried 2 times, same result.

After then I have been alarmed what is really going on in this pool.

Btw, active miners. This is just text on the web side. This do not proof anything.  Perhaps time when they have started all was ok and continous miners may have set autopay and because coins come no need do anything, until need change something.

Of course it may be that problem is for some email servers only, specially is his system do not follow tghtly RFC's (but it do look like this problem)

If his mailbox is broken then please some information on the pool front side.

This do not look very good:

Quote
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipient has been delayed:

     admin@bitcrush.info

Message will be retried for 2 more day(s)

Technical details of temporary failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain bitcrush.info by mail.bitcrush.info. [162.243.211.228].

The error that the other server returned was:
451 Temporary local problem - please try later

Can not cash out, can not change account details.
Really nice?

All emails to admin continue rejected.

And today more fun if tru contact form on the pool side.
"There was a problem sending your message. Please try again. "

No any answer to any letter to pool admin.

Can not cash out.
Can not change account settings.
Confirmation email do not work. (and they really are not spam filtered)

What is going on with this pool?
No one know?

Oh yeah, exactly same thing here. Smells like scam.  Angry

They have "753 Active Miners" at the moment

Of course I have checked spam folders and trash can. I'm not children who just have finded emails and internet.

Perhaps you did not read what you answer.

How many active miners - well, do it explain that I have not received needed confirmation emails and that admin of pool do not react to any messages.
