There may be an attempt by the US government or some entity to create a coin like Bitcoin but is easier to regulate and track. Of course I am certain this would be lobbied against by credit card companies and banks because they make fortunes off fees when they transfer money and a Bitcoin like coin supported by governments that would make transactions cheap and efficient would cut into their profits.

Well i dont think that in the next 1-3 years we ll have something that can replace btc. the only thing that comes to my mind is the fiat. if the bitcoin community doesnt grow more big, then there are chances that the fiat could completely replace btc.

Sounds like another chance to make some money:) It will take a while though, Bitcoin was the first so people will focus on it for a long time with every other coin in its shadow.

I would say btc has the market cornered since it already has plenty of media coverage. A likely candidate would be darkcoin but it will never be worth as much as bitcoin.

Why Darkcoin? What advantage does it have over the already established alt-coins such as Litecoin and Namecoin? Darkcoin will face the same fate as the Dogecoin. It will have two or three months of fame, and then it will vanish just like the 99.99% of the other altcoins.

"Soon" would be in the next 1-3 years or so.
One of the biggest dangers for BTC is something more useful coming along and investors switching - a process which could happen extremely fast, once started.
So to all the tech savy people in here - what advantages could other cryptocurrencies bring that will give them a crucial edge over BTC, and how fast could something like that come along?
3 years is a very short time. Currently all alt coins together have only a 10% marketshare as compared to bitcoin, of which litecoin has a huge share, so I dont think anywhere in the first 6 months. Btw, something "new" or "better" does not always replace the market.. there are platforms like Diaspora but people still use Facebook. From the developer list I know that bitcoin will be around at least 5 years more

I think BTC is here to stay. It already has a lot of businesses accepting Bitcoin and they will definetly keep accepting it. We really need to thank services like BitPay for making Bitcoin easy to accept.

last time I checked nxt was still closed source, what's the point ?
The source code for core Nxt is at https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/src. (That may not include all the services that run on top of Nxt.)

Would never be accepted/adopted. Trust in government is at an all time-low... They blew their chance. If they introduced gov-coin, it would only make people flock to bitcoin that much faster.

Darkcoin is on the move and probably objectively 'better' than Bitcoin since it is much more anonymous

but the market for cryptos right now is so tiny that it's unlikely that Darkcoin or any other altcoin will nudge Bitcoin out of the way. Maybe some day, after wider option, but definitely not yet. I don't see venture capitalists pumping money into altcoin companies.

Bitcoin has some anonymity features like coinjoin and stealth sx...darkwallet is supposed to implement coinjoin...so i don't see what the big fuss over darkcoin is about. if anything, maybe it could challenge litecoin.

At present only Nxt has everything it takes to catch up with Btc, but it would still take some years. Even in such case I don't think that Btc would suffer much, it is too well established and there are too many investments at stake. A possible outcome is that both Nxt and Btc will continue to live in parallel, catering to different needs; or, if Nxt marketcap becomes a multiple of Btc, maybe the latter can be incorporated into Nxt 'monetary system' and both coins will live happily in mutual symbiosis
