Looks like it adds that backups folder inside the data directory and stores the files with a walletname.date-time.  Extension isn't obvious (no .dat) either.  A+

If I recall correctly, I think the plans were to leave that as is - though I'll admit I can't find the source offhand and that was early branding material that could have changed.
