nice to have drk for betting Smiley

btw. whats about the idea supporting p2p pools somehow..? masternode donation seems quite interesting..

whats evans opinion?  Smiley

I've been pitching this idea for a while now, but didnt get much attention...

https://darkcointalk.org/threads/masternode-donation-to-p2pool.326/

Crouton, given your strong views around mining and the benefits of P2pool, I'm surprised you haven't commented on this.

I commented a page or three back here (I think it's a good idea, but not ideal) but I missed it on DCT back in April.

My stance is pretty simple: I am not comfortable trusting my investment (not Earth-shattering, but more than what I call pocket money) to three doofuses on the intertubes.

Imagine you had a $million or two. Would you really be happy putting millions of dollars into a system where your $millions could be rendered worthless overnight by somebody locating and compromising 3 servers or 3 server admins? Because that's the situation right now with PoW coins. You'd have to be actively stupid to trust such a system with any serious amount of investment.

It's a joke, it's pure toytown, someone could destroy BTC or DRK for a few thousand bucks tops.

Mmm...it's certainly worrying.

I've read the many interactions you've had with pool admins (if it wasn't so serious they'd be pure entertainment!)
I'm not knowledgeable enough on mining and pools to know what's truth/what's fiction.

But the fact that you're so concerned about it and the fact that these large pools (and ASICs) seem to be such a major concern means I'm wondering whether this is an elephant in the room that no one wants to deal with.

If this risk is as real as you're saying:
Quote

then we need more debate and I'd really like Evan to comment and discus it too.

Evan, can you offer any assessment on the risk to Darkcoin in light of Crouton's concerns?

question to evan, would masternodes be able to differentiate p2pool from ordinary pools?
Masternodes do not have anything to do with pools. Being it Centralized or P2pools.
It't the miners that need a pool, not the MNs.
MNs are used solely in the whole Anonymization and InstanTX processes.

No, all miners look the same to the protocol. I like the idea of more users using P2Pool, but It's got to be the users that decide to do that, there's really no way to enforce it. Plus, I think the P2Pool software just needs improvement (complete rewrite probably).

The masternode system can't really do donations like people are asking for either, there's  not a good way to do that. If people want to donate, they'll have to manually calculate some of the profit and send it that way .

Tx Evan , that is good to know !
I posted your answer over at the Thread regarding Mn donations !

When the foundation is up it will be much easier to do/work with donations !

Great answer, clear as always, thanks.
Re: the foundation redistribution - I would much rather support Devs, Official video, Georgem's cartoons and press releases after instantx than miners on one of the pools.

I agree, all we can do is encourage miners to use P2Pool but the way I see it at the moment is that there is a reason WHY miners are using the big pools... Because it's easy! I consider myself pretty tech savvy (I'm an IT engineer by trade and know my way around linux) and even I took one look at P2Pool and all the stuff I'd have to learn/read and thought 'bugger it'. Admittedly, I'm very lazy  Tongue but the fact is most people are the same... It's human nature...

There is very little real incentive for miners to change the way they operate, and that's the bottom line.

As for the masternode donations issue - the way i see it is that it's nice in theory but as soon as a donation becomes mandatory it becomes a Tax... Then we're going down a whole new rabbit hole full of issues.

There is nothing complicated about using a p2pool node for mining.
It has nothing to do with setting up your own node. You can use any p2pool node you want, and its even easier that with central pools, as there is no registration for example.

choose the nodes that have lowest latency from your miner (just check the link http://p2pools.org/drk).

example for cgminer:
cgminer -o stratum+tcp://eu.p2pool.sk:7903 -u <YOUR_DRK_ADDRESS> -p x -o stratum+tcp://us.p2pool.sk:7903 -u <YOUR_DRK_ADDRESS> -p x

that's about it.
You can track your miners 'performance' on the page too, just use http:// instead of the stratum+tcp:// and type that into your browser.

Ah, and did I write that you will earn marginally more that with a centralized pool ?

I completely agree. I've been saying this for over a year now (since 22nd May 2013!) on the p2pool thread, I even started a new thread about it in an effort to find a coder to do it:

Evan, if you or you know of anyone capable of doing the re-write, maybe you can pop by the p2pool thread with your suggestions - you will get plenty of support as well as some excellent help & suggestions, there are some very knowledgable p2pool users there who are crying out for a fresh start  Smiley

Why a rewrite ? Use the current version - https://bitbucket.org/dstorm/p2pool-drk.git - for the pool.
It just works.

Anyone interested in a VM with p2pool code and darkcoind ? With some logic that keeps the daemon and pool code up to date ?

v0.10.16.16 is out! Everyone please update

- Found the issue causing "last darksend was too recent"

Mixing should be much faster now.

https://www.darkcoin.io/downloads/

For anyone who hasn't checked it out, denominating in v0.10.16.16 felt like perfect smooth sailing. It's basically free and progressed through the rounds much more rapidly, no errors at all. This was my experience at least.

Ah, and did I write that you will earn marginally more that with a centralized pool ?

P2Pool just feels very Commadore 64, like you're taking a step back in time to the days of 14.4k modems and bulletin board services.

Also have a think about the average user's journey to discover Crypto.  Take someone who wants to have a crack at mining, 95 times out of 100 that person will be familiar with windows and will only really know centralisation, apart from a bit of p2p file sharing cause they don't like to watch commercials.

So they are googling on about how to mine crypto currencies and come across a well presented, well marketed mining pool that lots of help and information and makes you feel like you're being looked after, it's a no-brainer as to where you are going to mine.

P2Pool is poorly presented, has virtually no support for new comers and to be brutally honest, the hashrate reflects the product.

When I had my farm I tried to use it many times, however every time I used my connection for anything else, DOA went crazy high, so I always went back to pool mining, which never gave me issues like that.  So even after you get through the education process, technically it's got it's challenges.

I would like to see it do well, however as Evan mentioned, it probably needs a re-write.

The new generation have arrived and they brought their own currency...
