They originally said it would be 24 hours after the soft launch, + or - 8 hours.  As network hash rate increases coin trys to keep balance, but the actual ETA is block 2601. We are at 993 right now.

No, I understasnd. I'm just Huh at the big swing in blocks per minute. I thought the it adjusting quickly would result in a consistent 60 seconds per block.

If you are on windows you dont. Linux is all good on 2GB, Great on 4GB,[10%improv] Perfect on 8GB[extra 5% improv]

I can't seem to get VertMiner (official version) to work...
I get error and GPU disabled as soon as I launch it.

What am I doing wrong guys?

Thanks.
Try this
{
"pools" : [
   {
      "url" : "url",
      "user" : "",
      "pass" : ""
   }

]
,
"intensity" : "13",
"worksize" : "256",
"lookup-gap" : "2",
"thread-concurrency" : "8192",
"temp-cutoff" : "80",
"expiry" : "30",
"log" : "5",
"queue" : "0",
"scan-time" : "1",
"device" : "0",
"shaders" : "1200",
"scrypt-vert" : true
}

Still getting error and GPU DISABLED right after launch..

How much system ram do you have?  Also, why do you have your shaders command set for 1200 on a 280X card?

Who me?

I got 2gb and I set 2048 originally.

Anyway the exact error is "Error-4: Enqueueing kernel onto command queue"

You don't have enough system ram to run Scrypt-N!
