This is from 2015, but I doubt much has changed. This small business owner paid almost $7,000 in bank fees in one year, including a $2,150 application fee for a small business loan, $971 for a letter of credit, and monthly account fees of around $250. "Gardner was also charged a monthly account fee of $25 for the 10-year length of the loan, which amounts to $3,000." - sounds like he had to pay this in full, up front. In the essence of time I read the article briefly. If anything, the situation is more likely to be worse today. The banks everywhere are pilling up fees on business accounts, often times difficult for small business owners to understand or justify. SBA in Canada and the US would appear to be doing a great job. For the most part, they are. Unfortunately, many business owners may not realized the added cost and risk they are signing up for. On top of the fees, business owners must provide personal guarantee, first or second mortgage on what they own as well as any company's assets. If the business fail, (60% chance in five years) the owners often ended up loosing more than just the business. They are still liable for any unpaid balance. It is in effect a bank guarantee, but you are still totally liable if you default on the rental agreement. I would have absolutely negotiated it out of the rental agreement. It not a liability I would ever signup for. It is bad enough to lose your business. You must protect yourself in case it fails. Getting a clean start must be a part of your "plan B." |

I am on my way to visit one of the biggest bitcoin mines in the world: where up to $8m in digital currency is generated per year by solving complicated mathematical algorithms with computers. The location is secret and I have been invited under the strict condition that I live onsite with the miners. The owners don’t want to broadcast their specific location, because while the Chinese government is neither officially pro or against bitcoin, the huge amount of money flowing from these mines is outside state control. The town itself is so high up in the mountains that you have to bring your own cans of oxygen. Mobile phone signals frequently disappear around the mountains and valleys that surround the township. What stood out to me was that they appear to be interested only in currencies that don't compete with bitcoin. The Winklevoss twins chose ether to trade on its exchange because of its "unique capabilities" that are different from bitcoin, they said.
"There is a place for ether on our platform. It does what bitcoin doesn't do," Winklevoss said. The book is quite an accomplishment and will open a lot of doors for us. However, what is most important to me is that we will be able to reach out to help a lot of small business owners and their employees. Many small business owners around the world are struggling because of increasing cost burdens due to increased government regulations, taxes, and bank charges. We are firmly committed to help them reduce their transaction cost. Above all, the book will be a source of inspiration for both the employers and their employees to work closely together for the mutual benefits of both parties.
