A few years ago, there was a survey by a reputed institute in Crimea. More than 85% of the ethnic Russians and some 65% of the ethnic Ukrainians wanted Crimea to merge with Russia.
Among the Tatars, some 33% wanted Crimea to merge with Turkey, while some 17% wanted to merge with Russia. The remaining wanted to create a Crimean Tatar Autonomous Majlis inside Ukraine.
that was before Ukraine economy collapsed and nationalists (or Nazis, depending on your point of view) took control in Kiev.
At present if you want a guess, I would say 99% of people who live in Crimea right now would gladly abandon the ship that is Ukraine and join with anyone. Even Turkey. Why not. At least in Turkey no one minds when people speak Russian, they seem to like it.
Of course Turkey may not make it into EU as quickly as Ukraine will. To get into EU faster, Turks should have built barricades in Ankara, and Istanbul, then kill a few hundred people from sniper rifles, and burn a few buildings. After that of course EU politicians would have immediately agree that Turkey is a democratic and truly "European" country and admit them to the Union right away and give them a pile of money.
By the way, speaking of "ethnic" Russians and Ukrainians. I really do not get this. My grandfather had 5 brothers, three of whom were Ukrainians and the other three including him were Russians according to their passports. How can you really figure out who is who?
I suppose by the color of the flag one is waving. Of course carrying flag all the time it is also very inconvenient, because one's hands are occupied and it makes it difficult to punch other people.
I suppose this flaw can be easily rectified if democratic Rada will issue a law requiring everyone to wear armbands, say blue/red/white for Russians, zhovto blokitny (or may be red and black) for Ukrainians, and of course mogen david for jews if there are still any left. Just like good old times when there was das ordnung in Ukraine.
