I agree with you that the fight for the first spot requires a lot of efforts since the beginning of the season but also it might happen to be first when your direct rival start missing points randomly at any time of the season.
Real Madrid missed 4 points in the last three games while Barcelona missed only two. Continuing like that, the gap between these two clubs will shrank and Barcelona could catch Real Madrid. I know this possibility might not happen but Real Madrid have to stop losing random games.

I won't say they did extremely well so far in the endeavors this season as definitely they had times of good news and good results and also times where they fell short of victory which was a negative effect to their journey so far this season.
