fear in such risks usually makes people not want to take a chance. many people support IEO or ICO because they can get greater profits than buying an existing cryptocurrency. think about it, when you buy a token on an IEO, and that token has a very high price. it happened with some IEO in the popular market. it might be risky, but it's the same as supporting existing crypto, it also has risks.

Yes, but some profit in after an IEO takes place, because most of them when listed in an exchange the price go lower than IEO price, so I think buying in an exchange for a cheaper price is good. You may get more profit if you buy more before it booms in  other exchanges also. You may invest in other coins that they have been partnered also.

There are actually a lot of ways to make money here, you can join in some ICO's but as of now ICO's are not good because of the market's condition. There's another you can join, IEO, it is better I think to ICO's. But as of now, I prefer investing in some tokens, buying some more when the price is low just like today and waiting on the right time that the price will rise up and that is the time that I will sell it. From my experience, if you really like a token and want to keep it longer than 24 hours after listing, definitely buy it AFTER the token launches. Just take a look now at altcoins and see how many are higher than their ICO price (after launching in 2017 I mean). Most are even 10% of their ICO price, so you actually gain so much more if you buy after. Again, only if you're not speculating of course!
